The determination of two secondary lipid oxidation compounds (hexanal and pentane) in liquid infant foods using a headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatographic (HS-SPME-GC) method has been developed and validated. The HS-SPME analytical conditions (fibre position, equilibration and sampling times) were selected. The analytical parameters of the method (linearity: hexanal from 2.48 to 84.78 ng/g, pentane from 6.21 to 79.55 ng/g; precision: hexanal 2.87%, pentane 2.343.46%; recovery: hexanal 106.60%, pentane 95.39%; detection limit: hexanal 3.63 ng and pentane 4.2 ng) demonstrate the usefulness of the method. The rapid increase in mobile phone use in young people has generated concern about possible health effects of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) and extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMF). MOBI-Kids, a multinational case–control study, investigates the potential effects of childhood and adolescent exposure to EMF from mobile communications technologies on brain tumor risk in 14 countries. Early Parental Death and Risk of Psychosis in Offspring: A Six-Country Case-Control Study

Evidence for early parental death as a risk factor for psychosis in offspring is inconclusive. We analyzed data from a six-country, case-control study to examine the associations of early parental death, type of death (maternal, paternal, both), and child’s age at death with psychosis, both overall and by ethnic group. In fully adjusted multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression models, experiencing early parental death was associated with 1.54-fold greater odds of psychosis (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.23, 1.92). The role of taste on food preferences has already been investigated, however, little is known about the role of olfaction. The main objectives of this work were to assess infants’ olfactory responses, their dynamic during the first two years of life, and also their links with early food exposures, food liking and infants’ food neophobia. This work was conducted within a longitudinal study named OPALINE (Observatory of food preferences in infants and children). Olfactory responses were assessed, in 8-, 12- and 22-month-old infants, towards pleasant odours, such as vanilla, and unpleasant odours, such as fish.
