Effects on Heat Stress of a Flame-Retardant Ensemble for Aluminum Smelters

A common belief is that a flame-retardant clothing ensemble will increase the level of heat stress over ordinary cotton work clothes. This is supported by bench tests on fabrics that indicate higher insulation and vapor resistance values for flame-retardant clothing. This research compared a flame-retardant clothing ensemble for an aluminum smelter (Zirpo wool shirt and FR8 denim pants) with typical cotton work clothing. Four young men walked on a treadmill at two work levels inside a climatic chamber under controlled conditions of heat stress. Laboratory Measurements of Flow and Turbulence in Discontinuous Distributions of Ligulate Seagrass

Turbulent flow characteristics were investigated in laboratory flume studies of a ligulate plant canopy interrupted by a gap representing discontinuities observed in seagrass prairies. The reliability of velocity measurements obtained using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter within the canopy was shown using specifically designed experiments. In relatively fast flow (mean velocity 5.5 cm s−1), the mean flow profile was logarithmic above the canopy, had an inflection point near its top, and uniformly low values within it. The geometry of surfaces in 4-space from a contact viewpoint

We study the geometry of the surfaces embedded in ℝ4 through their generic contacts with hyperplanes. The inflection points on them are shown to be the umbilic points of their families of height functions. As a consequence we prove that any generic convexly embedded 2-sphere in ℝ4 has inflection points.

Logistic Growth Described by Birth-Death and Diffusion Processes

We consider the logistic growth model and analyze its relevant properties, such as the limits, the monotony, the concavity, the inflection point, the maximum specific growth rate, the lag time, and the threshold crossing time problem. We also perform a comparison with other growth models, such as the Gompertz, Korf, and modified Korf models. Moreover, we focus on some stochastic counterparts of the logistic model. First, we study a time-inhomogeneous linear birth-death process whose conditional mean satisfies an equation of the same form of the logistic one. Pore structural characterization of monolithic silica columns by inverse size-exclusion chromatography

In this work, a parallel pore model (PPM) and a pore network model (PNM) are developed to provide a state-of-art method for the calculation of several characteristic pore structural parameters from inverse size-exclusion chromatography (ISEC) experiments. The proposed PPM and PNM could be applicable to both monoliths and columns packed with porous particles. Purpose The main aim of this work is the search of characteristic points of a beam profile and application of these points for the TPS commissioning purposes. The comparison between profiles during the commissioning of the treatment planning system is a very important procedure. Critical point Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation

We study Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation with the renormalisation group improved potential in the case when loop corrections generate a feature similar to an inflection point. Assuming that there is a threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling $\lambda$ and the top Yukawa coupling $y_t$, we scan the three-dimensional parameter space formed by the two jumps and the non-minimal coupling $\xi$. The spectral index $n_s$ can take any value in the observationally allowed range. The lower limit for the running is $\alpha_s>-3.5\times10^{-3}$, and $\alpha_s$ can be as large as the observational upper limit. Running of the running is small. The surface tension of supercooled water is of fundamental importance in physical chemistry and materials and atmospheric sciences. Controversy, however, exists over its temperature dependence in the supercooled regime, especially on the existence of the second inflection point (SIP). Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations of the SPC/E water model to study the surface tension of water (sigma(w)) as a function of temperature down to 198.15 K, and find a minimum point of surface excess entropy per unit area around approximate to 240-250 K. Investigation of Inspiratory Pressure-Volume Curves on Mechanically Ventilated Patients Using Least Square Polynomial Fit

Abstract An on-line method for the registration of pressure volume 1 oops TrT mechanically ventilated patients was developed using a personal computer with analog/digital interface. A third order polynomial function was fitted to the measured inspiratory pressure volume pairs. The significance of the fitting procedure was calculated using regression ANOVA. The inflection point of the pressure-volume curve was determinated by calculating the root of the second derivative of the polynomial. The method was teseted on 20 patients without major pulmonary dysfunction and on 6 patients with severe ARDS.

A Global View on Generic Geometry

We describe how the study of the singularities of height and distance squared functions on submanifolds of Euclidean space, combined with adequate topological and geometrical tools, shows to be useful to obtain global geometrical properties. We illustrate this with several results concerning closed curves and surfaces immersed in \(\mathbb {R}^n\) for \(n=3,4, 5\).
