Problems in the Interplay of IS Development and IT Operations: An Alignment Analysis

This chapter addresses the interplay of IS development and IT operations in system development projects, as seen from the perspective of IT operations. The underlying perspective is that a well-performed interplay of the two domains is essential, both for the successful development of a new information system, as well as for its subsequent operation. In this chapter, we use alignment theory to analyse data from a Delphi study in order to investigate the interplay of the two areas. The chapter concludes that the two areas are often unsatisfactorily aligned and that improving their interplay must be a priority for IS development and IT operations alike.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for performance indicators to measure and improve crisis communication preparedness of public authorities. Such an instrument supporting organizational learning has not yet been developed for crisis communication. Literature is used to create a basis and the framework is derived from a process model with various phases integrating communication activities with crisis management. Taking Organizational Implementation Seriously: The Case of IOS Implementation

Despite of the rapid technical development, failures in information systems implementation are common and it seems obvious that the implementation of inter-organizational systems (IOS) include all the same possibilities for failures as intra-organizational systems - and unfortunately even some more. In this paper, we present some empirically proven means for avoiding problems during the implementation of IOSs. Our argumentation is based on the idea of organizational implementation of information systems, where the phases before and after the technical implementation are considered to be the most critical ones. The data from a case study are used to illustrate and support the ideas presented.

In spring 1989 we surveyed the experiences of some Finnish companies in methodology modelling (metamodelling) and adaptation of tools and methodologies to each other (methodology adaptation). The companies represented software production, banking, wood and metal industry, and wholesale trade. The study was carried out as a field study where we interviewed method developers, systems analysts and their supervisors. A lot of research has been undertaken focusing on ERP systems lifecycles, but very little paid attention to retirement. ERP retirement means the replacement of an ERP with another. The aim of this research paper is to investigate why and when should organizations retire their ERP systems. A convenience case study of a SME has been selected from Egypt.
