Nucleation and Collapse of the Superconducting Phase in Type-I Superconducting Films

The phase transition between the intermediate and normal states in type-I superconducting films is investigated using magneto-optical imaging. Magnetic hysteresis with different transition fields for collapse and nucleation of superconducting domains is found. This is accompanied by topological hysteresis characterized by the collapse of circular domains and the appearance of lamellar domains. Magnetic hysteresis is shown to arise from supercooled and superheated states. Domain-shape instability resulting from long-range magnetic interaction accounts well for topological hysteresis. Connection with similar effects in systems with long-range magnetic interactions is emphasized.

Effects of nonlinearity and substrate’s deformability on modulation instability in NKG equation

International audience; This article investigates combined effects of nonlinearities and substrate's deformability on modulational instability. For that, we consider a lattice model based on the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with an on-site potential of deformable shape. Such a consideration enables to broaden the description of energy-localization mechanisms in various physical systems. We consider the strong-coupling limit and employ semi-discrete approximation to show that nonlinear wave modulations can be described by an extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation containing a fourth-order dispersion component. Constraining the p -Mode– g -Mode Tidal Instability with GW170817

We analyze the impact of a proposed tidal instability coupling p modes and g modes within neutron stars on GW170817. This nonresonant instability transfers energy from the orbit of the binary to internal modes of the stars, accelerating the gravitational-wave driven inspiral. We model the impact of this instability on the phasing of the gravitational wave signal using three parameters per star: An overall amplitude, a saturation frequency, and a spectral index. Incorporating these additional parameters, we compute the Bayes factor (lnB!pgpg) comparing our p-g model to a standard one. ALMA observations of Molecules in Supernova 1987A

AbstractSupernova (SN) 1987A has provided a unique opportunity to study how SN ejecta evolve in 30 years time scale. We report our ALMA spectral observations of SN 1987A, taken in 2014, 2015 and 2016, with detections of CO, 28SiO, HCO+ and SO, with weaker lines of 29SiO.We find a dip in the SiO line profiles, suggesting that the ejecta morphology is likely elongated. The difference of the CO and SiO line profiles is consistent with hydrodynamic simulations, which show that Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities causes mixing of gas, with heavier elements much more disturbed, making more elongated structure.Using 28SiO and its isotopologues, Si isotope ratios were estimated for the first time in SN 1…

Study of a sample of faint Be stars in the exofield of CoRoT. II. Pulsation and outburst events: Time series analysis of photometric variations

Context. The class of Be stars are the epitome of rapid rotators in the main sequence. These stars are privileged candidates for studying the incidence of rotation on the stellar internal structure and on non-radial pulsations. Pulsations are considered possible mechanisms to trigger mass-ejection phenomena required to build up the circumstellar disks of Be stars. Aims. Modulational instability in resonant optical fiber with higher-order dispersion effect

International audience; The modulational instability (MI) of an electromagnetic wave in a resonant optical fiber with a two-level system is investigated. In the normal dispersion regime, we find the occurrence of nonconventional MI sidebands which are induced by the two-level resonant atoms. We also observe that the MI gain spectra are suppressed by the higher-order dispersion effect in the anomalous dispersion regime.

Modulational instability in fiber systems with periodic loss compensation and dispersion management

In this paper we study modulational instability in a Kerr fiber taking into account the combined effects of periodic power variations and dispersion management. It is shown that periodic dispersion management and periodic amplification produce nonconventional MI sidebands which are essentially independent of each other. In addition, we show that the amplifier spontaneous emission noise tends to inhibit the growth of sidebands, for a sufficiently long propagation distance.

Dynamical bar-mode instability in spinning bosonic stars

Spinning bosonic stars (SBSs) can form from the gravitational collapse of a dilute cloud of scalar/Proca particles with nonzero angular momentum, via gravitational cooling. The scalar stars are, however, transient due to a nonaxisymmetric instability which triggers the loss of angular momentum. By contrast, no such instability was observed for the fundamental ( m = 1 ) Proca stars. In [N. Sanchis-Gual et al., Phys. Rev.
