Recent Borexino results and perspectives of the SOX measurement

2017

International audience; Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector sited underground in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). Its physics program, until the end of this year, is focussed on the study of solar neutrinos, in particular from the Beryllium, pp, pep and CNO fusion reactions. Knowing the reaction chains in the sun provides insights towards physics disciplines such as astrophysics (star physics, star formation, etc.), astroparticle and particle physics. Phase II started in 2011 and its aim is to improve the phase I results, in particular the measurements of the neutrino fluxes from the pep and CNO processes. By the end of this year, data taking from the sun will be over…

Realization of an Energetic Hub Based on a High-Performance Dish Stirling Plant

2018

In this work the realization of an energetic hub based on a high-performances dish Stirling system, at the DEIM of the University of Palermo, is presented. The realized system is the first top rated solar thermodynamic plant directly connected to the national electric grid. The connection permits the electricity injection into the grid and allows to access to national renewable energy incentives regime. The system realization was possible thanks to an international cooperation between the University of Palermo and the private company Horizon S.r.l., official partner of Ripasso Energy AB, owner of this technology. Initial data of the plant energy production and the foreseen improvements for …

The Strategic Scorecards: An Instrumentation of the Strategic Management Accounting. Exploration of a Concept, Instrumentation and Results from a Fre…

2003

I describe in this study a generic model of strategic management accounting instrumentation: the strategic scorecards. In order to build this generic model, I review in the existing literature the concepts of Strategic Control and Strategic Management Accounting (SMA). I present the characteristics of these concepts and analyse the reasons why they emerged. I show how the strategic scorecards are an instrumentation of the SMA in studying the most widely known and esteemed scorecards: the Balanced Scorecards (Kaplan & Norton, 1996) and Skandia's Navigator (Edvinsson & Malone, 1997). I then clarify the outlines for a generic model of strategic scorecard and disclose an "a priori" typology of …

Geometric deformation measurement and correction applied to dynamic streak camera images

2002

The complete procedure of measuring and correcting geometric deformations encountered with dynamic streak camera images in the picosecond range is presented and discussed. First, we describe the experimental setup derived from the well known spacing calibration grid method. The implemented measurement bench, adapted to time-resolved 1D imaging, notably exhibits a great accuracy and repeatability both in space and time thanks to a three-axis motorized translation stage and programmable delay lines. Second, we examine image restoration by two different analytical transform means (local versus global): results and performances of both are compared. Then we deal with final image reconstruction …

Real time optical immunosensing with flow-through porous alumina membranes

2014

Through the presentation of analytical data from bioassay experiments, measured by polarimetry, we demonstrate for the first time a real time immunoassay within a free standing macroporous alumina membrane. The 200 nm nominal pore diameter of the membrane enables flow-through, thereby providing an ideal fluidic platform for the targeted delivery of analytes to bioreceptors immobilized on the pore walls, enabling fast sensing response times and the use of small sample volumes (<100 mu L). For the immunoassay, the pore walls were first coated with the functional copolymer, copoly(DMA-NAS) using a novel coupling process, before immobilization of the allergen protein, beta-lactoglobulin, by spo…

Fine–grained spinel ferrites: From the reactivity to magnetic properties

1998

The oxidation at low temperature of fine-grained ferrites containing oxidizable cations such as Cu + , Fe 2+ , Mn 2+ , Mo 3+ , V 3+ , has led to new mixed-valent cation deficient ferrites with a large number of vacancies. It has been demonstrated by DTG analysis that each cation oxidizes at a specific temperature in close relation with the cation-oxygen distance. The kinetics oxidation of each oxidizable cation has been explained on the basis of a diffusion-induced stress effect when these stresses are generated by the chemical gradient induced during the oxidation process. When fine-grained ferrites contain some Co-cations, it has been revealed that the stresses have a significant influenc…

Piezospectroscopic study of mechanical stress in Al2O3:Cr under swift heavy ion irradiation

2009

Abstract The spatial distribution of mechanical stresses in Al2O3:Cr single crystal irradiated with (1 ÷ 3) MeV/amu Kr, Xe and Bi ions has been studied by using laser confocal scanning microscopy technique. The stress level as a function of the ion penetration depth has been evaluated from depth-resolved photostimulated R-line luminescence spectra exploiting the piezospectroscopic method. As it was found, the stress field generated by swift heavy ion irradiation is composed of stresses with maximal magnitude comparable with the ultimate stress limit of ruby crystals. Experimental data are discussed in the framework of a model considering the Cr3+ atoms as individual piezosensors.

Spectrochemical Rubidium-Strontium Method for Geological Age Determination

1960

The age values of lepidolites from South Africa and from Varutrask as well as that of a microcline from Varutrask have been determined and are discussed in connection with determination according to the potassium-argon method, applied to the same materials A method is suggested which allows the spectrochemical determination of Rb and Sr with sufficient accuracy. The isotopic composition is determined by means of a Fabry-Perot etalon and hollow-cathode excitation, investigating the hyper-fine structure of the Sr line at 4078 A.
