Numerical Study of breakup in generalized Korteweg-de Vries and Kawahara equations

2010

This article is concerned with a conjecture by one of the authors on the formation of dispersive shocks in a class of Hamiltonian dispersive regularizations of the quasilinear transport equation. The regularizations are characterized by two arbitrary functions of one variable, where the condition of integrability implies that one of these functions must not vanish. It is shown numerically for a large class of equations that the local behaviour of their solution near the point of gradient catastrophe for the transport equation is described locally by a special solution of a Painlev\'e-type equation. This local description holds also for solutions to equations where blow up can occur in finit…

Deformations of semisimple Poisson pencils of hydrodynamic type are unobstructed

2015

We prove that the bihamiltonian cohomology of a semisimple pencil of Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type vanishes for almost all degrees. This implies the existence of a full dispersive deformation of a semisimple bihamiltonian structure of hydrodynamic type starting from any infinitesimal deformation.

Nonlinear hyperbolic equations in surface theory: integrable discretizations and approximation results

2006

A numerical scheme is developed for solution of the Goursat problem for a class of nonlinear hyperbolic systems with an arbitrary number of independent variables. Convergence results are proved for this difference scheme. These results are applied to hyperbolic systems of differential-geometric origin, like the sine-Gordon equation describing the surfaces of the constant negative Gaussian curvature (K-surfaces). In particular, we prove the convergence of discrete K--surfaces and their Backlund transformations to their continuous counterparts. This puts on a firm basis the generally accepted belief (which however remained unproved untill this work) that the classical differential geometry of…

Numerical study of the transverse stability of the Peregrine solution

2020

We generalise a previously published approach based on a multi-domain spectral method on the whole real line in two ways: firstly, a fully explicit 4th order method for the time integration, based on a splitting scheme and an implicit Runge--Kutta method for the linear part, is presented. Secondly, the 1D code is combined with a Fourier spectral method in the transverse variable both for elliptic and hyperbolic NLS equations. As an example we study the transverse stability of the Peregrine solution, an exact solution to the one dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation and thus a $y$-independent solution to the 2D NLS. It is shown that the Peregrine solution is unstable against all…

Numerical study of shock formation in the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and dispersive regularizations

2013

The formation of singularities in solutions to the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation is studied numerically for different classes of initial data. The asymptotic behavior of the Fourier coefficients is used to quantitatively identify the critical time and location and the type of the singularity. The approach is first tested in detail in 1+1 dimensions for the known case of the Hopf equation, where it is shown that the break-up of the solution can be identified with prescribed accuracy. For dissipative regularizations of this shock formation as the Burgers' equation and for dispersive regularizations as the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the Fourier coefficients indicate as …

Combinatorics of generalized Bethe equations

2012

A generalization of the Bethe ansatz equations is studied, where a scalar two-particle S-matrix has several zeroes and poles in the complex plane, as opposed to the ordinary single pole/zero case. For the repulsive case (no complex roots), the main result is the enumeration of all distinct solutions to the Bethe equations in terms of the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Two new combinatorial interpretations of the Fuss-Catalan and related numbers are obtained. On the one hand, they count regular orbits of the permutation group in certain factor modules over \({\mathbb{Z}^M}\), and on the other hand, they count integer points in certain M-dimensional polytopes.

Deformations of the seventh order Peregrine breather solutions of the NLS equation with twelve parameters.

2013

We study the solutions of the one dimensional focusing NLS equation. Here we construct new deformations of the Peregrine breather of order 7 with 12 real parameters. We obtain new families of quasi-rational solutions of the NLS equation. With this method, we construct new patterns of different types of rogue waves. We recover triangular configurations as well as rings isolated. As already seen in the previous studies, one sees appearing for certain values of the parameters, new configurations of concentric rings.

Deformations of third order Peregrine breather solutions of the NLS equation with four parameters

2013

In this paper, we give new solutions of the focusing NLS equation as a quotient of two determinants. This formulation gives in the case of the order 3, new deformations of the Peregrine breather with four parameters. This gives a very efficient procedure to construct families of quasi-rational solutions of the NLS equation and to describe the apparition of multi rogue waves. With this method, we construct the analytical expressions of deformations of the Peregrine breather of order N=3 depending on $4$ real parameters and plot different types of rogue waves.
