Implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning at Schools in Latvia
2017
The European Union supports multilingualism and promotes the learning of foreign languages since their knowledge enhances understanding among peoples and increases employability. To increase the efficiency and effectiveness of foreign language education in schools, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has been promoted in Europe; this has influenced ways in which Latvia nowadays approaches bilingual education. A qualitative case study was undertaken to explore the implementation of CLIL at schools in Latvia, CLIL being seen as an element of bilingual education. This article outlines the development of CLIL in Latvia, which is largely embedded in national level policies which have…
A teacher's reflections on learning and teaching in an English-medium CLIL teaching experiment
2013
Tutkimuksen t…

Kulttuurienvälisen tietoisuuden ja kieliasenteiden kehittyminen CLIL-opetuksessa
2018
CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) has been claimed to create a positive attitude towards languages and language learning in general and to raise intercultural awareness. The studies on the topics have however remained scarce. This study examines the issue from former pupils’ perspective. The 24 participants, who received English-medium CLIL during their comprehensive school in the 1990s, were interviewed in-depth and the data were analysed qualitatively. Most participants felt that CLIL had had a very positive effect on their attitudes towards English. However, many considered that CLIL had partly been detrimental to their attitudes towards and learning of other languages. The…
Negotiating language across disciplines in pre-service teacher collaboration
2017
AbstractIn multilingual learning settings, in order to provide optimal learning conditions for all learners and support both disciplinary and language knowledge development, subject teachers need knowledge on and understanding of how language is used to construct meanings in their discipline and how to scaffold learning from the premise of learners’ current skills. Student teachers of science and ethics collaborated with student teachers of Finnish language and literature to plan and implement thematic units that focused on particular disciplinary phenomena …
Design and Style of Cultural and Media Studies Textbooks for College Students
2014
This paper uses the conceptual framework of multimodal discourse analysis in order to investigate the dominant styles and designs in selected Cultural and Media Studies (CMS) university textbooks. For many EFL students who major in philology, CMS courses are obligatory and thus constitute a type of content and language integrated learning (CLIL). The data from a description and evaluation of four popular textbooks indicate that there is a discernible move away from traditional literacy towards visuality and orality in textbook design and style. This tendency is evident in the use of segmentation and listing in composition, dialogic layouts and informal registers in exposition and visual aid…
Attitudes towards the English language : A comparison between a CLIL class and a regular class
2009
Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin alakoulun 6.-luokkalaisilta (N=48) lyhyen kyselylomakkeen av…
