Synthesis and evaluation of diverse thio avarol derivatives as potential UVB photoprotective candidates.

Semisynthesis of 13 new thio avarol derivatives (4-16) and in vitro evaluation on the photodamage response induced by UVB irradiation are described. Their ability to inhibit NF-kappaB activation and TNF-alpha generation in HaCaT cells as well as their antioxidant capacity in human neutrophils has also been studied. Among them we have identified two monophenyl thio avarol derivatives (4-5) lacking cytotoxicity which can be considered promising UVB photoprotective agents through the potent inhibition of NF-kappaB activation with a mild antioxidant pharmacological profile.

Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune disease that is characterized by vasculopathy and fibrosis of the skin and visceral organs. Heart valve diseases are poorly described and generally not considered typical of SSc. We aimed to describe valvular abnormalities in a multicenter cohort of SSc patients and to investigate their correlation with SSc features. The autofluorescence photobleaching intensity dynamics of in vivo skin and skin pathologies under continuous 532 nm laser irradiation have been studied. Overall the 141 human skin malformations were investigated by laser induced skin autofluorescence photobleaching analysis. Details of equipment are described along with some measurement results illustrating potentiality of the technology.

T cells can be found in skin under steady-state conditions as well as in inflammatory processes. T cells in skin play an important role in immune homeostasis as well as control of infectious, inflammatory diseases or tumors. In addition, several important and frequent skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, autoimmune disease, and contact allergy are initiated by T cells. In skin diseases, the majority of antigen-specific T cells can be found in the tissue, not the peripheral blood. Vibrio vulnificus is a pathogen of public health concern that causes either primary septicemia after ingestion of raw shellfish or secondary septicemia after wound exposure to seawater. In consequence, shellfish and seawater are considered its main reservoirs. However, there is one aspect of its biology that is systematically overlooked: its association with fish in its natural environment. This association led in 1975 to the emergence of a zoonotic clade within phylogenetic lineage 2 following successive outbreaks of vibriosis in farmed eels. Coordinated Hair Growth Wnt/β-catenin signaling is a key pathway that plays a conserved role in regulating stem cell function during adult tissue regeneration. Using time-lapse imaging of live mice, Deschene et al. (p. 1353 ) show that genetic activation of β-catenin within hair follicle stem cells generates axes of hair growth by coordinated cell divisions and cell movements, even when the normal niches—the dermal papillae—are laser-ablated. Aim: The moisturizing properties of glycerol, the penetration enhancing capability of propylene glycol and the bioadhesive properties of mucin were combined to improve the carrier capabilities of transfersomes and the efficacy of mangiferin in the treatment of skin lesions. Crosslinked xyloglucan-poly(vinyl alcohol) based hydrogel films are interesting materials for wound healing applications. This work focuses on the hydrolytic degradation and consequent morphological modification of a XG-PVA film and on its interaction with cells, blood, bacteria. Biocompatibility of the film was assessed in vitro by investigating different aspects, such as cell viability, oxidative stress level, mitochondrial dysfunction and specific stress biomarkers. 1055-7903; The goal of the current study was to determine if cuticular hydrocarbons could be used to empirically delimit taxa within the Cryptocercus punctulatus species complex in the eastern United States. Cockroaches were collected from rotting logs in 22 locations across four states. Hydrocarbon phenotypes and two mitochondrial (16S and COII) genes and one nuclear (ITS2) gene were independently analyzed to determine their relationship with chromosome number.
