Extracorporeal Shock Wave Stimulates Angiogenesis and Collagen Production in Facial Soft Tissue.

Abstract Background This study investigated the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave (ESW) application in stimulating dermal thickness, vascularity, and collagen synthesis of facial skin in a large animal model. Materials and methods The facial skin of the maxillary and mandibular areas of goats (n = 6 per group) was treated with ESWs of different intensities (0.15 and 0.45 mJ/mm2; 1000 pulses). Ultrastructural Pathology of Eccrine Sweat Gland Epithelial Cells in Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy

Three of four children were recognized by deficient β-galactocerebrosidase activities as having globoid cell leukodystrophy inclusions in sweat gland epithelial cells, similar in ultrastructure to those seen in Schwann cells. This observation in globoid cell leukodystrophy emphasizes the need to include sweat gland epithelial cells in examinations of skin in globoid cell leukodystrophy, as well as in any neurometabolic disorder. Chronic active hepatitis associated with vitiligo, nail dystrophy, alopecia and a new variant of LKM antibodies

In this report we describe the case of a 7-year-old boy, suffering from autoimmune-type chronic active hepatitis (AI-CAH) associated with vitiligo, nail dystrophy, alopecia areata and a variant of liver kidney microsomal (LKM) autoantibodies. This patient's antibodies are different from LKM-1 which are directed against cytochrome P450 db1. They react predominantly with perivenous hepatocytes in contrast to LKM-1 antibodies which homogeneously stain the whole liver lobule in immunofluorescence. In Western blot analysis this LKM variant reacts with a liver microsomal protein of approx. 50 kDa, but not with recombinant LKM-1 (cytochrome P450 db1) antigen. Changes in pulmonary calcitonin gene-related peptide and protein gene product 9.5 innervation in rats infected with Mycoplasma pulmonis.

Changes in the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and polyneural protein gene product 9.5 (PGP) in hilar peribronchial innervation was investigated by immunohistochemistry in specific pathogen-free rats chronically infected with Mycoplasma pulmonis. Image analysis of immunostained sections revealed a reduction of approximately 62% in the amount of CGRP- and PGP-immunoreactive innervation of the peribronchial area in the infected animals. The portion of the total bronchial perimeter occupied by bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue was increased six-fold. Supravital Methylene Blue Staining of Piloneural Complexes of Common Fur Hair Follicles in the Rat

Light microscopic observations employing supravital methylene blue staining are presented for piloneural complexes of common fur hairs in the mystacial pad of the rat snout. The investigation revealed anatomical details of piloneural complexes belonging to follicles of both vellus and guard hairs. In the methylene blue stained preparations, different types of palisade-like lanceolate nerve fiber endings could be discriminated. The thicker vellus and thinner guard hairs (hair diameter: 15-25 microm) exhibited a different innervation pattern compared to the thicker guard hairs, and two subtypes of piloneural complexes could be distinguished. Establishment and Characterization of Two Merkel Cell Tumor Cultures

Two Merkel cell tumor cultures (MC-MA1, MC-MA2) have been established from metastases of typical Merkel cell tumors. The mestastases in vivo were characterized by co-expression of cytokeratins 8, 18, 19, 20 and neurofilaments, presence of intermediate filament whirls, expression of synaptophysin, neuron-specific enolase, and chromogranin A, rare and weak immunostaining for plakoglobin but absence of cadherins and desmoplakins. Both cultures grow, using supplemented RPMI medium on human irradiated fibroblast feeder layers, as loosely arranged floating small aggregates. Their karyotypes are mostly hyperdiploid. Human Epidermal Langerhans Cells Replenish Skin Xenografts and Are Depleted by Alloreactive T Cells In Vivo

Abstract Epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) are potent APCs surveying the skin. They are crucial regulators of T cell activation in the context of inflammatory skin disease and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). In contrast to other dendritic cell subtypes, murine LC are able to reconstitute after local depletion without the need of peripheral blood-derived precursors. In this study, we introduce an experimental model of human skin grafted to NOD-SCID IL2Rγnull mice. In this model, we demonstrate that xenografting leads to the transient loss of LC from the human skin grafts. Gender-Dependent Effect of GSTM1 Genotype on Childhood Asthma Associated with Prenatal Tobacco Smoke Exposure

It remains unclear whether the GSTM1 genotype interacts with tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) in asthma development. This study aimed to investigate the interactions among GSTM1 genotype, gender, and prenatal TSE with regard to childhood asthma development. In a longitudinal birth cohort in Taiwan, 756 newborns completed a 6-year follow-up, and 591 children with DNA samples available for GSTM1 genotyping were included in the study,and the interactive influences of gender-GSTM1 genotyping-prenatal TSE on childhood asthma development were analyzed. Oscillatory brain activity associated with skin conductance responses in the context of risk

Understanding the neural correlates of risk-sensitive skin conductance responses can provide insights into their connection to emotional and cognitive processes. To provide insights into this connection, we studied the cortical correlates of risk-sensitive skin conductance peaks using electroencephalography.
