Evaluation of interaction metaphors for collaborative work distant immersive sites

2009

The design of the virtual environment (VE) has to take into account several factors including the input and output devices, the design of the interaction metaphor or the application domain. In addition to these considerations, the design of a collaborative virtual environment (CVE) needs to take into account the collaborative aspect of the interaction metaphor. In one hand, the interaction metaphor has to be designed for the best possible task performance. In the other hand, the influence of the interaction metaphor on the user's experience (in terms of psychological and social aspects) constitutes an important research question. To address this research question, two experimental studies h…

Physical, chemical and mechanical evolution of the fuel-cladding interface in irradiated PWR fuel rods

2022

During the fuel irradiation in nuclear reactor, the fuel-cladding assembly is exposed to several irradiation-induced modifications. The fuel swelling coupled with cladding creep leads to a contact between the fuel and the cladding. The oxygen transport from the UO2 fuel to the zirconium layer induces progressively the Zr-cladding oxidation. This oxidation is initially local with the formation of islets. Then, with the increasing burnup of the fuel, it conducts to a continuous layer of about 8-µm thickness, localized at the fuel-cladding interface. At high burnup, zirconia growths anchor themselves in the periphery of the fuel (which is restructured) leading to pellet/cladding interlocking. …

Analysing the mechanisms of common ground in collaborative web-based interaction

2001

The ideas presented in this paper are challenged especially by the certain critical questions concerning web-based interaction and the qualitative analysis of such interaction and learning. The question arises whether the students from different contexts and countries are able to reach such interaction that would lead them to educationally relevant higher-level discussion and learning in web-based environments. Furthermore, as this field of study is fairly novel, there is a shortage of established methodologies for analysing computer-mediated communication and the complex phenomena it encompasses. In this presentation, we attempt to find new approaches to discover how people establish and m…

Bridging Sensing and Decision Making in Ambient Intelligence Environments

2009

Context-aware and Ambient Intelligence environments represent one of the emerging issues in the last decade. In such intelligent environments, information is gathered to provide, on one hand, autonomic and easy to manage applications, and, on the other, secured access controlled environments. Several approaches have been defined in the literature to describe context-aware application with techniques to capture and represent information related to a specified domain. However and to the best of our knowledge, none has questioned the reliability of the techniques used to extract meaningful knowledge needed for decision making especially if the information captured is of multimedia types (image…

Interactive evolution for cochlear implants fitting

2007

International audience; Cochlear implants are devices that become more and more sophisticated and adapted to the need of patients, but at the same time they become more and more difficult to parameterize. After a deaf patient has been surgically implanted, a specialised medical practitioner has to spend hours during months to precisely fit the implant to the patient. This process is a complex one implying two intertwined tasks: the practitioner has to tune the parameters of the device (optimisation) while the patient's brain needs to adapt to the new data he receives (learning). This paper presents a study that intends to make the implant more adaptable to environment (auditive ecology) and…

An Essay on Denotational Mathematics

2019

Denotational mathematics is a new rigorous discipline of theoretical computer science that springs out from the attempt to provide a suitable mathematical framework in which laid out new algebraic structures formalizing certain formal patterns coming from computational and natural intelligence, software science, cognitive informatics, neuronal networks, and artificial intelligence. In this chapter, a very brief but rigorous exposition of the main formal structures of denotational mathematics is outlined within naive set theory.
