Surfactant effect of Sb on the growth of Ag films on a sapphire substrate
1996
It is shown that a very thin layer of Sb may be used as a surfactant to modify the growth of silver films on an insulating substrate. The conduction (percolation) current flowing through a dispersed Ag film appears at a significantly smaller thickness due to the change in the growth mode of silver islands. Some practical applications are indicated.
Friction and wear of lubricated M3 Class 2 sintered high speed steel with and without TiC and MnS additives
2005
Abstract M3/2 sintered high speed steel and composite materials processed by initial admixing of 5 wt.% TiC (to decrease wear) and 5 wt.% MnS (to minimise friction) powders, singly and in combination, were assessed in pin-on-disc tribometers specially constructed to simulate use in the automotive valve train. Pins were of the sintered materials and the mating tribological material discs of T1 high speed steel. For comparison with existing conventional materials, identical tests were performed with discs and pins of two types of spheroidal cast iron. Testing at ∼110 °C, employing a few drops of fresh Shell Helix Standard SAE: 15W-40, API: SJ/CF oil, in daily segments of 5000 m of sliding dis…
Laser Ultrasonic Testing for Estimation of Adhesion of Al2O3Plasma Sprayed Coatings
2001
Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the possibility of using a laser ultrasonic technique for the estimation of the adhesion of ceramic coatings, deposited onto metallic substrates by thermal spraying techniques. For this purpose, a pulsed Nd : YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm, 14 ns) was used to irradiate Al2O3 coatings, of different thickness (30–350 µm), deposited onto stainless steel substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying. The laser generated ultrasonic waves were in situ recorded at the epicentre using a laser heterodyne interferometer. The acoustic waveforms were correlated with the interaction between the pulsed laser radiation and the coated metal, taking into account …
Influence of laminated architectures of heterostructured CeO2-ZnO and Fe2O3-ZnO films on photodegradation performances
2020
Abstract The development of photocatalytically active films has gained a great attention in recent years. Herein, new heterostructured films associating ZnO and CeO2 or Fe2O3 and exhibiting various architectures were prepared by the solution precursor thermal spray (SPPS) process. The paper examines the effect of the films laminated architectures on the photodegradation performance. For CeO2-ZnO and Fe2O3-ZnO films, the photodegradation efficiency of the Orange II dye is 100% and 95% after 240 min UV light irradiation and after 360 min visible light irradiation, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the laminated structures was found to depend on the materials used to construct the h…
Electropolishing of CuZn brasses and 316L stainless steels: Influence of alloy composition or preparation process (ALM vs. standard method)
2016
International audience; In the present paper, electropolishing behavior of different brass alloys (CuZn39Pb2, CuZn42) in phosphoric acid is studied to observe the impact of alloying elements on polishing quality. In the same way, the influence of the manufacturing process is also evaluated through the comparison of a “standard” stainless steel and a stainless steel prepared by Additive Laser Manufacturing (ALM). An electrochemical study was first performed to determine the best treatment conditions for each material/electrolyte pair and to study the electropolishing mechanism and its kinetic dependence on diffusion. Metallic samples are fully characterized before and after electropolishing …
The effect of wear on the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation and the residual stress distribution in zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools
1998
Abstract Zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools have been examined after machining an AISI 1040 steel. The Raman spectrum of zirconia and the fluorescence spectrum from alumina have been used to determine the extent of the tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t-m) transformation and the residual stresses in and around the worn-out crater, respectively. Although about 15% vol. m-zirconia is present even in a brand new cutting tool, it was shown that the crater region undergoes the t-m transformation up to 40% vol. In both cases, the transformed zone is concentrated near the surface. The residual stresses in alumina are slightly compressive in the new cutting tool and away from the crater region, but …
XPS and SIMS study of aluminium native oxide modifications induced by Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treatment
2006
Publié suite au congrès ECASIA: 11th European Conference on Applications of Surface and Interface Analysis, 25-30 September 2005, Vienna, Austria; International audience; During laser cleaning of aluminium in ambient atmosphere, modifications of the metal surface can be induced by transient thermal effects. This work aims to characterize the modification of the aluminium oxide layer on pure aluminium for a wide range of power per area using a Q-switched Nd :YAG (1064 nm) laser with two pulse durations, 10 and 180 ns. Experiments were carried out with single laser shots in ambient air at fluences (e.g. energy per area) below the ablation regime. For 10-ns pulses with fluences between 0.7 and…

Energy structure and electro-optical properties of organic layers with carbazole derivative
2014
Abstract Phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes are perspective in lighting technologies due to high efficient electroluminescence. Not only phosphorescent dyes but also host materials are important aspect to be considered in the devices where they are a problem for blue light emitting phosphorescent molecules. Carbazole derivative 3,6-di(9-carbazolyl)-9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole (TCz1) is a good candidate and has shown excellent results in thermally evaporated films. This paper presents the studies of electrical properties and energy structure in thin films of spin-coated TCz1 and thermally evaporated tris[2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine]iridium(III) (Ir(Fppy)3). The 0.46 eV difference …
Computer vision profilometer: equipment and evaluation of measurements
1991
Abstract This paper describes a new equipment that measures roughness values by a computer vision (CV) technique. Measurements carried out by a CV profilometer are also evaluated. A laser source (power 2 mW), a cylindrical lens and a charge coupled device (CCD) TV-camera with a suitable optical system form an image of the profile of the sample under inspection. This image is then transformed into a binary image by thresholding and the line that divides the bright zone from the dark zone is the sample profile. From this line the characteristic roughness values can be calculated. The roughness measurements are carried out both by the CV profilometer and a stylus profilometer on eight specimen…
