Washington, une ville mondiale ?

2001

Washington DC is rarely mentioned in the scientific literature on world cities. However, its influence on the world economy is obvious (World Bank, IMF, Federal Reserve). As a new immigration center, Washington has grown rapidly into an international city. It is suggested that the concept of global city must be re-examined to propose a more flexible definition.

Present Uncertainty and Looking to the Past: The Ambiguous Literary Nationalism of Putnam’s Monthly

2023

Putnam’s Monthly (1853-1857) was one of the best literary and general interest magazines in antebellum America. Besides its high quality, what made the New York-based magazine stand out was its commitment to publishing American writers and focusing on American themes at a time when, with no reliable international copyright protection in place, many periodicals in the United States were in the habit of reprinting the works of foreign (primarily British) authors, sometimes without payment. However, despite its optimistic literary nationalism, Putnam’s Monthly expressed uncertainty about the quality of contemporary American literature and, indeed, about the capacity of American society to enco…

2016

The recent mobilization of estranged fathers in France is the expression of a cause that emerged in the 1970s, following the feminist mobilizations of that time. InEurope, as in North America, these groups denounced a family justice that seemingly favours women by awarding them custody of the children and by relegatingfathers to provider status, in terms of child-support payments. While these fathers hold egalitarian claims in promoting the sharing of a child’s education after the parents’ separation, their actions and discourses effectively support the traditional family unit by denouncing the ‘‘catastrophic’’ consequences of divorce on children. In light of a France-Que´bec comparison, we…

2004

The last two decades have been marked in many developed and emerging countries by major educational reforms, around special themes: decentralization, the differentiation of courses and school content and the free choice of school. These three education policies, which aim to differentiate and diversify the educational offer, call into question the traditional organization of modern educational systems. This study seeks to evaluate the effects of these reforms on the performance of education systems, thanks to an econometric analysis based, on the one hand, on the results of the PISA 2000 international evaluation and, on the other, on a a fine description of the institutional characteristics…
