Determinants of physical activity in daily life in candidates for lung transplantation

2012

BACKGROUND: Participation in daily physical activity (PA) has never been objectively assessed in candidates for lung transplantation (LTx). The main research questions were: 1) How active are LTx-candidates in daily life? 2) What are determinants of activity behavior before LTX? METHODS: Ninety-six candidates for LTx (diagnosis of COPD or interstitial lung disease; mean age 55 ± 7 years) underwent measurements of PA, pulmonary function, 6-min walking distance (6MWD), muscle force and health-status (SF-36 scale). RESULTS: Patients were markedly inactive (5% of waking hours walking, 26% standing and 69% sedentary). Backward multiple regression identified 6MWD (expressed as % of predicted valu…

Serum surfactant protein D and exhaled nitric oxide as biomarkers of early lung damage in systemic sclerosis

2017

Background Interstitial lung disease (ILD) complicates the course of systemic sclerosis (SSc), representing the main cause of death in these patients. The identification of parameters that can predict the early onset and progression of ILD in SSc represents an unmet need in clinical practice. The study was designed to explore whether the surfactant proteins (SP) A and D may be used as noninvasive tools for the early identification of ILD in SSc. Alveolar exhaled nitric oxide (NO) was investigated as a surrogate marker of distal inflammation. Methods Unselected consecutive subjects newly diagnosed with scleroderma and subjects free of respiratory and systemic diseases were recruited. All pat…

Tubulointerstitielle-Nephritis-Uveitis-Syndrom (TINU-Syndrom)

1995

Abstract For 10 weeks a 25-year-old man had been suffering from tiredness, fatigue, nausea and a 16 kg weight loss. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (83/133 mm), serum C-reactive protein (5.5 mg/dl) and creatinine (5.05 mg/dl) were all elevated. He also had proteinuria (1120 mg daily), sterile leukocytosis and a creatinine clearance of 10 ml/min. Renal biopsy showed interstitial nephritis and bone marrow biopsy revealed non-caseous epithelioid-cell granulomas. 14 days after admission he developed acute iritis in the right eye. Other causes having been excluded, the diagnosis of tubulo-intestinal nephritis with uveitis (TINU syndrome) was made. The clinical symptoms and laboratory findings imp…

Pregnancy After Urinary Diversion at Young Ages-Risks and Outcome.

2016

Objective To assess the urologic and obstetric outcomes during and after pregnancy following urinary diversion (UD) performed during childhood or adolescence. Materials and Methods From our UD database, we identified 25 women who became pregnant between 1981 and 2013. Reasons for UD were neurogenic bladder, exstrophy, trauma, sinus urogenitalis, and interstitial cystitis. Seventeen had continent cutaneous diversion, 4 had continent anal diversion, and 4 had colonic conduit. Results The average age at delivery was 27.8 (18-39) years. Thirty-seven pregnancies occurred; 1 patient decided for an induced abortion. Thirty-two healthy children were born. Five patients had a spontaneous abortion be…

Combined use of uterine artery embolization and local methotrexate injection in interstitial ectopic pregnancies with poor prognosis.

2009

Objective To report three cases of interstitial pregnancies treated successfully by combining uterine artery embolization (UAE) and ultrasound-guided local administration of methotrexate (MTX); and to assess the effect of UAE on ovarian reserve by prospectively measuring serum antimullerian hormone (AMH) levels. Design Case report. Setting Departments of obstetrics and gynecology and radiology of a university hospital. Patient(s) Three patients with interstitial pregnancy. Treatment with multiple IM injections of MTX had failed in cases 1 and 3. Case 2 presented high initial serum β-hCG levels (93,563 mIU/mL), suggesting the presence of a substantial amount of trophoblastic tissue. Interven…

The Potential Role of Lung Ultrasound B-Lines for Detection of Lung Radio-Induced Toxicity in Breast Cancer Patients after Radiation Therapy.

2016

Breast cancer patients exposed to doses of radiation after radiotherapy could develop toxicity to lung. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is able to detect interstitial lung disease by the evaluation of B-lines. The aim of our study was to assess the number of B-lines to diagnose lung involvement after chest radiotherapy. We measured LUS B-lines in the treated and contralateral lung of 20 breast cancer patients, 1-3 months after the end of radiotherapy and 1 year after previous LUS. The sum of the B-lines number in the 72 sites on anterior and posterior chest yielded a global B-lines score.B-lines were more numerous in treated (median: 21; 1st-3rd quartiles: 11-31) versus untreated hemithorax (median: 3…

Laparoscopic management of interstitial pregnancy: the "purse-string" technique

2012

We report five cases of interstitial pregnancy, treated between 2004 and 2010, to evaluate surgical and obstetric outcome of laparoscopic cornual resection with a "purse-string" technique. A hemostatic suture was passed at the base of the mass in a purse-string fashion prior to resection, to minimize intraoperative blood loss. Subsequent pregnancies were analysed, with a mean follow-up time of 48 months. The mean operating time was 39 min and mean blood loss 47 mL. Three of four patients who desired children delivered at term uneventfully. Laparoscopic cornual resection with a "purse-string" technique appears to be useful for treatment of early interstitial pregnancy. The technique ensures …

Diffusion of oxygen in nickel: A variable charge molecular dynamics study

2010

Abstract Variable charge molecular dynamics have been performed to study the diffusion mechanisms of oxygen atoms (O) in nickel (Ni) in the temperature range 950 K–1600 K. It is observed that oxygen does not diffuse via jumps of oxygen through interstitial sites but via a vacancy diffusion mechanism. The oxygen diffusivity can be well described by an Arrhenius law over the temperature range considered. The oxygen diffusion coefficient has been analysed and indicates a value of E a = 1.99 eV for the activation energy and D 0 = 39.2 cm 2 s − 1 for the pre-exponential factor. Our numerical results were compared with a compilation of experimental and theoretical studies, and exhibit a good agre…

Autoimmune ear disease: clinical and diagnostic relevance in Cogan’s sydrome

2017

The autoimmune inner ear disease is a clinical syndrome with uncertain pathogenesis that is often associated to rapidly progressive hearing loss that, especially at the early stages of disease, may be at monoaural localization, although more often it is at binaural localization. It usually occurs as a sudden deafness, or a rapidly progressive sensorineural hearing loss. In this study a particular form of autoimmune inner ear disease is described, Cogan’s syndrome. Cogan’s syndrome is a chronic inflammatory disorder that most commonly affects young adults. Clinical hallmarks are interstitial keratitis, vestibular and auditory dysfunction. Associations between Cogan’s syndrome and systemic va…
