Vascular damage and lack of angiogenesis in systemic sclerosis skin

2003

The aim of this study was to analyse microvascular damage and compensatory angiogenesis in skin from patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) compared with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) and healthy controls. Immunohistochemistry was used for skin biopsies (9 SSc, 10 SLE, 9 RP and 12 healthy controls) using von Willebrand factor and beta3 integrin subunit specific antibodies, TechMate immunostaining robot and biotin-streptavidin protocol. In the early stages of SSc, vWF was found in the perivascular space and interstitial matrix in papillary but not in the reticular dermis, in particular around small oedematous blood vessels infiltrated by mononuclear cells. The…

Expression of LFA-1 (CD11a/CD18) and ICAM-1 (CD54) in an animal model of renal interstitial fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction

2000

Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) has been used as an experimental model to induce tubulointerstitial damage and interstitial fibrosis. UUO is characterized by cellular proliferation, accumulation of inflammatory cells, and subsequent replacement of renal parenchyma by fibrous tissue. The influx of inflammatory cells into the renal interstitium is mediated by adhesion molecules. In this study, the development of fibrosis in the UUO model of the rat was examined and its relation to the time course of LFA-1 and ICAM-1 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. An increase in interstitial connective tissue was detected on day 10 after UUO, with a maximum on day 35. After unilateral u…

Cell fusion as a mechanism for the formation of giant cells (Langhans’ type)

1982

The formation of multinuclear giant cells of the Langhans' type in tubulo-interstitial auto-immune nephritis in the rat has been investigated by means of autoradiography. While in the majority of giant cells all nuclei were radiolabeled, in a few both labeled and unlabeled nuclei were present. This latter finding represents strong evidence in favour of the hypothesis that giant cells do not form by endomitotic processes but rather through fusion of certain precursor cells. According to previous studies this precursor cell population consists mainly of epitheloid cells, i.e. modified monocytes.

Assessment of Lung Cancer Development in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients Using Quantitative High-Resolution Computed Tomography:A Retrospectiv…

2020

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate histogram-based quantitative high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) indexes in the assessment of lung cancer (LC) development in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients. Materials and methods From IPF databases of 2 national respiratory centers, we retrospectively studied patients with and without LC development-respectively, divided into Group A (n=16) and Group B (n=33). The extent of fibrotic disease was quantified on baseline and follow-up HRCT examinations using kurtosis, skewness, percentage of high attenuation area (HAA%), and percentage of fibrotic area (FA%). These indexes were compared between the 2 groups using the Man…

Alterations of the beneficial effect of deep inspiration in scleroderma: relationships between lung function and imaging.

2007

Background: It has been postulated that the beneficial effects of deep inspiration are dependent on the magnitude of airway distension by virtue of airway to parenchyma interdependence. Objective: This study was designed to examine whether the changes that occur in pulmonary fibrosis affect the beneficial effect of deep inspiration. Methods: Thirty-one subjects with scleroderma underwent lung volume and diffusion capacity assessment as well as high-resolution computed tomography. To assess the effect of deep inspiration, each subject underwent methacholine provocations in the absence of deep breaths. When the targeted change in lung f…

Interstitial Lung Disease in Elderly Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

2019

The increase in life expectancy together with better care of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has led to higher proportions of elderly individuals with RA. This has challenged the treatment of the disease in older aged patients, usually characterized by comorbid conditions and polypharmacy. Overall, the lung involvement in RA is present in up to 80% of patients, depending on the assessment tools used, and interstitial abnormalities are among the most common; when present, interstitial lung disease (ILD) worsens the prognosis of RA, and is the second most common cause of mortality. The aged lung undergoes functional and structural changes termed immunosenescence and inflammaging, which facilitate t…

Detection of flap venous and arterial occlusion using interstitial glucose monitoring in a rodent model.

2010

Background: Free tissue transfer necessitates vigilant postoperative monitoring for vessel occlusion. Unfortunately, most monitoring methods require experienced personnel and are expensive to use. Furthermore, many tests have low sensitivity, low specificity, or significant delay between vessel occlusion and detection. The authors report on a novel method of tissue monitoring that avoids these limitations by tracking interstitial glucose concentration. Methods: Vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous flaps were elevated in adult rats based on the superior epigastric vessels. Interstitial glucose within the flaps was monitored using a transcutaneous sensor. Interstitial glucose was recorded f…

Epistaxis and systemic disease

2008

Abstract We report the case of a 77-year-old man who presented nasal obstruction sensation and epistaxis. Otorhinolaryngologic examination revealed occupation of the left nasal passage and the left maxillary sinus by an inflammatory tumour, the biopsy results of which were inconclusive. While diagnostic tests were being carried out, the patient presented a severe systemic condition consisting mainly of anemia, acute renal failure, and cavitated diffuse bilateral lung infiltrates. In the light of the results of anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies and renal biopsy, Wegener's granulomatosis was diagnosed and treatment for the disease was instituted, with a favourable response. Finally, cl…

Four-faceted nanowires generated from densely-packed TiO2 rutile surfaces: Ab initio calculations

2013

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) slabs and monoperiodic (1D) nanowires orthogonal to the slab surface of rutile-based TiO 2 structure terminated by densely-packed surfaces and facets, respectively, have been simulated in the current study. The procedure of structural generation of nanowires (NWs) from titania slabs (2D → 1D) is described. We have simulated: ( i ) (110), (100), (101) and (001) slabs of different thicknesses as well as ( ii ) [001]- and [110]-oriented nanowires of different diameters terminated by either four types of related {110} facets or alternating { 1 1 ¯ 0 } and {001} facets, respectively. Nanowires have been described using both the Ti atom-centered rotation axes as well…
