Constructing knowledge : epistemic practices in three television interview genres

2011

This study analyses epistemic practices in broadcast television interviews, focusing on three different interview genres: celebrity interviews, sports interviews and political interviews. In the analysis I examine the linguistic and interactional practices that are used to construct knowledge in the interviews. These practices include mobilization of different types of knowledge, use of assessments to invite first-hand knowledge, negotiation of epistemic stances while disaligning with the question, and use of assessments for claiming or contesting epistemic rights to authority and expertise. The study comprises four articles and a summary. Article I focuses on celebrity interviews and analy…

Shared Situational Awareness in a Professional Soccer Team: An Explorative Analysis of Post-Performance Interviews

2020

Sport science research has done little to elaborate on the cognitive factors that turn a collection of individual players into a coordinated elite team. The purpose of this paper is to clarify if the players and coach of an elite soccer team express shared situational awareness. Ten players and one coach were exposed to twelve video pictures from a previous soccer match, and their statements for each picture were recorded and analyzed using a qualitative approach. Two of five game situations were with ball possession and three out of seven were without ball possession

Using schematic representation of resource systems to examine how first year engineering students use resources in their studies of mathematics

2018

International audience; Very little research has been done on how students use resources when studying mathematics. My project aim to examine this both quantitatively and qualitatively. The qualitative data collection includes hierarchical focus interviews and schematic representation of resource system, with the intent to impose as little terminology as possible on the students.

Designing for Positive User Experience in Work Contexts: Experience Categories and their Applications

2018

Experience categories describe repeatedly occurring qualities of positive experiences that can be used for the analysis and generation of new/further/more positive experiences. This paper describes experience categories for the workplace. Based on 345 reports of positive user experiences in the workplace, we identified 17 experience categories through qualitative content analysis and describe their necessary and optional attributes. We believe that experience categories can support analysis and design activities for the work place in three ways: (a) using the questions derived from experience interviews to analyze existing positive experiences in work contexts, (b) explaining the potential …

A Systematic Way of Structuring Real-World Multiobjective Optimization Problems

2023

In recent decades, the benefits of applying multiobjective optimization (MOO) methods in real-world applications have rapidly increased. The MOO literature mostly focuses on problem-solving, typically assuming the problem has already been correctly formulated. The necessity of verifying the MOO problem and the potential impacts of having an incorrect problem formulation on the optimization results are not emphasized enough in the literature. However, verification is crucial since the optimization results will not be meaningful without an accurate problem formulation, not to mention the resources spent in the optimization process being wasted. In this paper, we focus on the MOO problem struc…

Proximity violence against women refugees and migrants in Sicily. Operators’ testimonies

2019

The research presented in this chapter intended illustrating the practices im-plemented to foster inclusion of and support to migrants above all, female refugees/asylum seekers hosted by reception centres in Sicily . At the same time, it sought to outline some of the limits the reception system presents when it comes to supporting victims of proximity vio-lence. A description of these practices and identification of the limits became, therefore, the two-fold purpose of this investigative project (PRoximity On VIolence: Defence and Equity) fouded by European Community Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme -2014-2020). To carry out the research two methodological choices had to be made: …

Sense of coherence and health among home-dwelling older people.

2010

Sense of coherence (SOC) is important for maintaining health. The aim of this study was to investigate if the SOC experience among home-dwelling physically active older people differs from that of hospital patients with the same age and sex. Data were collected with questionnaires and structured interviews containing Antonovsky’s SOC scale in an age- and sex-matched study group (n=160). Non-parametric statistical analyses were performed. No differences were found in SOC between home-dwelling individuals and patients. Ninety-five percent of the home-dwelling individuals perceived themselves as being in good health and 42.5% among the patients (p<0.001). SOC and disease were predictors fo…

INSTITUTIONAALINEN MONIÄÄNISYYS KUULUSTELUKERTOMUKSESSA

2016

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan institutionaalista moniäänisyyttä poliisin kuulustelukertomuksissa, ja fokuksessa ovat erilaiset äänet, niiden tuottamisessa käytetyt kielelliset keinot, äänten keskinäiset suhteet ja äänten funktiot teksteissä. Kuulustelun kirjaavan poliisin valinnat vaikuttavat merkittävästi eri äänten esillepääsyyn sekä äänten välisiin suhteisiin kuulusteluker tomuksessa. Kansalaisen ääni tuotetaan kuulustelukertomuksissa aktiivin yksikön tai monikon 1. persoonan, erilaisten partikkeleiden, kieltomuotojen, deiktisten pronominien sekä puhutun kielen mukaisten sananvalintojen avulla. Äänen representaatiotapa välittää kansalaisen diskurssista kansalaisen itsensä kaltaisena esitett…

Qualitative Evaluation of the STOEMP Network in Ghent: An Intersectoral Approach to Make Healthy and Sustainable Food Available to All

2020

The STOEMP network is, to our knowledge, one of the first initiatives to bring different sectors together in a municipality so as to increase accessibility to healthy and sustainable foods for all, with particular attention for the disadvantaged population. This qualitative study aimed to gain an in-depth insight into how the STOEMP network aims to reach its goal of making healthy, sustainable food available to everyone, through an intersectoral, collaborative process, exploring the facilitators and challenges of taking a systems-oriented approach to achieving this. Interviews were conducted among 15 stakeholders of the STOEMP network between March&ndash
