Abstract Background Maspin, a member of the serpin family, is a suppressor of tumor growth, an inhibitor of angiogenesis and an inducer of apoptosis. Maspin induces apoptosis by increasing Bax, a member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis-regulating proteins. In this exploratory study, we investigated the associated expression of Maspin and Bax proteins as a potential prognostic factor in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCCA). Male outbred Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a choline-deficient diet containing 0.1% w/w DL-ethionine (CDE) for up to 22 weeks. The expression of the pyruvate kinase isoenzymes L (L-PK) and M2 (M2-PK) was immunohistochemically analyzed in liver slices from rats killed 4, 10, 14 and 22 weeks after starting the treatment. M2-PK was detected in bile duct epithelial cells of untreated rats and in proliferating oval cells, cholangiofibroses and cholangiofibromas of CDE-fed animals. CHARACTERIZATION OF A NEW RAT CELL LINE ESTABLISHED FROM 2′AAF-INDUCED COMBINED HEPATOCELLULAR CHOLANGIOCELLULAR CARCINOMA

A rat cell line-nominated CC-62 derived from a combined hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinoma obtained by administration of 2-acetylaminofluorene to male Wistar rats, has been established. Using light and electron microscopy it was determined that morphologically the tumor consisted of a mixed population of hepatocytes and cholangiolar neoplastic cells, intermingled with small, undifferentiated oval-like cells. The CC-62 line has been maintained through 90 passages in culture adopting a paving stone arrangement. Doubling time at the 12th passage was 23 h. Summary Background Magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) has been validated as comparable to endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) for the diagnosis of sclerosing cholangitis (SC) in adult patients. In children, MRC is widely used based mainly on non-comparative studies. Patients and methods ERCs and MRCs of seven children (median age 9, range: 7–20 years) with SC and 17 controls (median age 6, range: 2 months–20 years) with other chronic liver diseases were reviewed in a blinded, random and independent way. Liver failure caused by light chain deposition disease associated with multiple myeloma.

Acute liver failure is an unusual complication in multiple myeloma. Here, we report a case of multiple myeloma with light chain deposition disease (LCDD) that presented with progressive jaundice due to intrahepatic cholestasis. Diagnosis was made after liver biopsy that showed deposition of kappa light chains occupying perisinusoidal spaces. The patient developed encephalopathy and liver failure and died despite prompt initiation of dexamethasone therapy. The current prognosis of multiple myeloma patients with liver failure due to LCDD is dismal. New therapeutic strategies might improve this condition.

Treatment of β-lactamase positive bacterial infections with a combination of amoxicillin (AMOX) and clavulanic acid (CLAV) causes idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (iDILI) in a relevant number of patients, often with features of intrahepatic cholestasis. Intrahepatic bile duct dilation and gallbladder hydrops due to a cystic duct stenosis in a 2-month-old boy.

A 2-month-old boy presented with slight diffuse abdominal pain after an uncomplicated pregnancy and perinatal period. Height (62 cm) and weight (5.5 kg) were according to the age. Cholestasis in newborn infants with perinatal asphyxia

Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the liver involvement in infants who have both neonatal asphyxia and neonatal cholestasis. Methods: We describe four asphyctic newborn infants (three born at term) who developed early (age 3.8 ± 2.1 days) intrahepatic neonatal cholestasis and in whom tests for causes of neonatal liver damage were negative. Results: The clinical picture and course were benign and similar to that of sporadic 'idiopathic' neonatal hepatitis. Clinical signs and abnormal liver function tests tended to normalize within the first year of life in all.
