Assessment of organic waste management methods through energy balance

In Italy, the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid W aste (OFMSW) is nowadays landfilled or processed through aerobic composting. The Italian towns curre ntly support a high cost for OFMSW disposal and cause a high environmental impact, because of long distance s travelled from towns to a few available landfills and fewer treatment places, as well as the used waste m anagement methods. An interesting option for OFMSW is Anaerobic Digestion (AD), producing biogas and “digestate”. Performance of a pilot-scale biotrickling filter in controlling the volatile organic compound emissions in a furniture manufacturing facility.

A 0.75-m3 pilot-scale biotrickling filter was run for over 1 yr in a Spanish furniture company to evaluate its performance in the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contained in the emission of two different paint spray booths. The first one was an open front booth used to manually paint furniture, and the second focus was an automatically operated closed booth operated to paint pieces of furniture. In both cases, the VOC emissions were very irregular, with rapid and extreme fluctuations. <title>Optical power and irradiance microprocessor meter for fiber optic sensors and networks testing</title>

In this paper are presented the optical power and irradiance meter with `an intelligent opto sensor' and the microprocessor measurement system. A designed and programmed microprocessor unit allows to measure a light power from 1 nW to 2 mW and an irradiance of light from 50 nW/cm2 to 150 mW/cm2 (with accuracy 0.2%) including sensor's and spectral responsively characteristic. Finite-element Discretizations of Semiconductor Energy-transport Equations

Energy-transport models describe the flow of electrons in a semiconductor crystal. Several formulations of these models, in the primal or dual entropy variables or in the drift-diffusion-type variables, are reviewed. A numerical discretization of the steady-state drift-diffusion-type formulation using mixed-hybrid finite elements introduced by Marini and Pietra is presented. The scheme is first applied to the simulation of a one-dimensional ballistic diode with non-parabolic band diagrams. Then a two-dimensional deep submicron MOSFET device with parabolic bands is simulated, using an adaptively refined mesh.

Multicolour LEDs in educational demonstrations of physics and optometry

LED light sources are used to design experimental setup for university courses teaching human color vision. The setup allows to demonstrate various vision characteristics and to apply for student practical exercises to study eye spectral sensitivity in different spectral range using heterochromatic flicker photometry. Technique can be used in laboratory works for students to acquire knowledge in visual perception, basics of electronics and measuring, or it can be applied as fully computer control experiment. Besides studies of the eye spectral sensitivity students can practice in trichromatic color matching and other visual perception tasks

A Correlation Retina in Standard 0.6um : Application in Positioning System

International audience; We have designed and fabricated a programmable retina that is capable of recognizing patterns stored in memory in real-time. Each of the pixels of the retina is composed of a photodiode and an electronic device used during the programming phase to digitize the image of the pattern to recognize into a binary image stored in latches. The array of pixels is thus partitioned into two complementary disjoint sub-sets with all the photodiodes of the same sub-set connected together in order to obtain the sum total of the currents. This letter reports the experimental demonstration of an indoor visible light nonimaging multiple-input multiple-output system with an aggregate error free bit rate of 50 Mb/s over a distance of 2 m. The system uses four independent white LED transmitters, each transmitting 12.5 Mb/s of data in the ON-OFF keying nonreturn zero format, and four independent nonimaging optical receivers. The performance of four detection methods ranging from the basic channel inversion to the more advanced space time techniques is compared experimentally. Higher PV Module Efficiency by a Novel CBS Bypass

There is an increasing focus on reducing costs and improving efficiency for photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules as well as finding a more efficient approach to the product manufacturing. This letter introduces an innovative solution to bypass shaded PV cells instead of a traditional Schottky diode, in order to avoid overheating of cells in the case of partial shading. The goal is to reduce the power dissipation and improve the general efficiency of a PV generator. A novel device called cool bypass switch is then presented. Functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) systems for e‐health applications usually suffer from poor signal detection, mainly due to a low end‐to‐end signal‐to‐noise ratio of the electronics chain.
