Administration of keratinocyte growth factor down-regulates the pulmonary capacity of acetylcholine production.

2007

Abstract Keratinocyte growth factor protects the lung against various injurious stimuli. The protective mechanisms, however, are not yet fully understood. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of keratinocyte growth factor on the pulmonary capacity to synthesize acetylcholine, a potent regulator of pulmonary functions which is potentially involved in lung damage. Rats were treated twice (days 1 and 2) intratracheally with keratinocyte growth factor and analyzed at day 4. The mRNA expression of choline acetyltransferase – the acetylcholine synthesizing enzyme – was analyzed by real-time RT-PCR in the lung and in isolated alveolar epithelial type II cells. Choline acetyltransfer…

Effect of different treatments in calcium-free medium on basal tone and contractile responses of guinea pig tracheae.

1995

Acetylcholine (ACh; 0.1 mmol/l) and KCl (80 mmol/l) induce a biphasic contractile response in isolated guinea pig tracheae maintained at 37 degrees C either in the presence or absence of extracellular Ca2+. Exposure of the tissue to Ca(2+)-free solution evokes a significant decrease in basal tone and the sources of Ca2+ appear to be decreased by prolonged agonist stimulation, and even more by successive agonist stimulation. After an incubation period of 20 min in Ca(2+)-containing solution, the response is restored. Mg(2+)-depletion in Ca(2+)-free medium increased the contractile response to ACh, but not to KCl, and delayed the tonic component of the next contraction elicited in Ca(2+)-cont…

The combined effect of refractory coatings containing reactive elements on high temperature oxidation behavior of chromia-forming alloys

2003

Abstract The high temperature oxidation behaviors of chromia-forming alloys (F17Ti and Fe–30Cr alloys) have been studied at 1273 K under isothermal conditions and at 1223 K under cyclic conditions, in air under the atmospheric pressure. To extend the oxidation lifetime, coatings have been applied onto the alloy surfaces. Al2O3 and Cr2O3 films doped with Sm2O3 or Nd2O3 were prepared via the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique. Single Cr2O3, Al2O3, Nd2O3 and codeposited Cr2O3–Nd2O3, Al2O3–Nd2O3, Al2O3–Sm2O3 coatings drastically improved the chromia-forming alloy high temperature oxidation behavior, since they decreased the oxidation rate and enhanced the oxide scale adhesion. Re…

Ion conduction in the KcsA potassium channel analyzed with a minimal kinetic model.

2004

We use a model by Nelson to study the current-voltage and conductance-concentration curves of bacterial potassium channel KcsA without assuming rapid ion translocation. Ion association to the channel filter is rate controlling at low concentrations, but dissociation and transport in the filter can limit conduction at high concentration for ions other than ${\mathrm{K}}^{+}$. The absolute values of the effective rate constants are tentative but the relative changes in these constants needed to qualitatively explain the experiments should be of significance.

Monitoring of Cell Layer Integrity with a Current-Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistor

2019

Abstract The integrity of CaCo-2 cell barriers is investigated by organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) in a current-driven configuration. Ion transport through cellular barriers via the paracellular pathway is modulated by tight junctions between adjacent cells. Rupturing its integrity by H2O2 is monitored by the change of the output voltage in the transfer characteristics. It is demonstrated that by operating the OECT in a current-driven configuration, the sensitive and temporal resolution for monitoring the cell barrier integrity is strongly enhanced as compared to the OECT transient response measurement. As a result, current-driven OECTs are useful tools to assess dynamic and crit…

Formation of anodic films on sputtering-deposited Al–Hf alloys

2009

Abstract The growth of barrier-type anodic films at high efficiency on a range of sputtering-deposited Al–Hf alloys, containing from 1 to 95 at.% Hf, has been investigated in ammonium pentaborate electrolyte. The alloys encompassed nanocrystalline and amorphous structures, the latter being produced for alloys containing from 26 to 61 at.% Hf. Except at the highest hafnium content, the films were amorphous and contained units of HfO 2 and Al 2 O 3 distributed relatively uniformly through the film thickness. Boron species were confined to outer regions of the films. The boron distributions suggest that the cation transport number decreases progressively with increasing hafnium concentration i…

Ionic Transport through Chemically Functionalized Hydrogen Peroxide-Sensitive Asymmetric Nanopores

2015

We describe the fabrication of a chemical-sensitive nanofluidic device based on asymmetric nanopores whose transport characteristics can be modulated upon exposure to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We show experimentally and theoretically that the current-voltage curves provide a suitable method to monitor the H2O2-mediated change in pore surface characteristics from the electronic readouts. We demonstrate also that the single pore characteristics can be scaled to the case of a multipore membrane whose electric outputs can be readily controlled. Because H2O2 is an agent significant for medical diagnostics, the results should be useful for sensing nanofluidic devices.

Effects of pH on ion transport in weak amphoteric membranes

1997

Abstract We have studied theoretically the effect of pH on the ion transport through amphoteric polymer membranes composed of weak polyelectrolytes where the charged groups are randomly distributed along the axial direction of the membrane. This system serves as a simplified model for the pH controlled ion transport and drug delivery through membranes of biological interest. The theoretical approach employed is based on the Nernst-Planck equations. The complete system of electrical charges formed by: (i) the pH dependent, amphoretic membrane fixed charge, and (ii) the four mobile charges (the salt ions and the hydrogen and hydroxide ions) have been taken into account without any additional …

pH and supporting electrolyte concentration effects on the passive transport of cationic and anionic drugs through fixed charge membranes

1999

Abstract The effects of pH and supporting electrolyte concentration on the passive transport of an ionized (cationic or anionic) drug through a thick fixed charge membrane have been theoretically studied. This system constitutes a simplified model for the pH controlled ion transport and drug delivery through membranes of biological and pharmaceutical interest. Calculations were carried out for different values of the membrane fixed charge, supporting electrolyte and drug concentrations covering a broad range of the conditions usually found in experiments. The theoretical approach employed is based on the Nernst–Planck flux equations, and all of the species present in the system (the neutral…
