Isomeric fission yield ratios for odd-mass Cd and In isotopes using the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique
2018
Isomeric yield ratios for the odd-$A$ isotopes of $^{119-127}$Cd and $^{119-127}$In from 25-MeV proton-induced fission on natural uranium have been measured at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap, by employing the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique. With the significantly improved mass resolution of this novel method isomeric states separated by 140 keV from the ground state, and with half-lives of the order of 500 ms, could be resolved. This opens the door for obtaining new information on low-lying isomers, of importance for nuclear structure, fission and astrophysics. In the present work the experimental isomeric yield ratios are used for the estimation of the root-mean-square a…
Effect of the gas mixing technique on the production efficiency of ion beams extracted from an electron cyclotron resonance ion source
2004
In this work the effect of gas mixing on the production efficiency of ion beams extracted from an ECR ion source has been studied with the JYFL 6.4 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS). It was found that the gas mixing affects strongly the confinement of ions in the plasma of the ECRIS. The information obtained can be used to minimize the consumption of expensive materials or isotopes and to reduce contamination of the plasma chamber. It was observed that the carbon contamination, which is built up when the MIVOC method is used could be decreased with the aid of the gas mixing technique. The best mixing gas for this purpose was found to be oxygen.
The effects of beam line pressure on the beam quality of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source
2010
The results of a series of measurements studying the possibility to use neutral gas feeding into the beam line as a way to improve the quality of the heavy ion beams produced with an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) are presented. Significant reduction of the beam spot size and emittance can be achieved with this method. The observed effects are presumably due to increased space charge compensation degree of the ion beam in the beam line section between the ion source and the analyzing magnet. This is the region where the neutral gas was injected. It is shown that the effects are independent of the ion source tuning. Transmission measurements through the beam line and K-130 c…
First absolute mass measurements of short-lived isotopes
1987
Absolute mass measurements of short-lived isotopes have been performed at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN by determining the cyclotron frequencies of ions confined in a Penning trap. The cyclotron frequencies for77,78,85,86,88Rb and88Sr ions could be determined with a resolving power of 3×105 and an accuracy of better than 10−6, which corresponds to 100 keV for massA=100. The shortest-lived isotope under investigation was77Rb with a half-life of 3.7 min. The resonances obtained for the isobars88Rb and88Sr were clearly resolved.
Effect of double frequency heating on the lead afterglow beam currents of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source
2017
International audience; The effect of double frequency heating on the performance of the CERN GTS-LHC 14.5 GHz ElectronCyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source in afterglow mode is reported. The source of the secondary microwave frequency was operated both in pulsed and continuous wave (CW) modes within the range of 12–18 GHz. The results demonstrate that the addition of the secondary frequency can significantly impact the extracted beam currents and the temporal stability of the beam during the afterglow discharge. For example, up to a factor of 2.6 increase was achieved for 208Pb35+ and a factor of 3.1 for 208Pb37+ compared to single frequency afterglow currents. It is shown that these effect…
Diagnostics of a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source helium plasma with the injection ofNa231+ions
2016
This work describes the utilization of an injected 23Na1+ ion beam as a diagnostics of the helium plasma of a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source. The obtained data allows estimating the upper limit for the ion-ion collision mean-free path of the incident sodium ions, the lower limit of ion-ion collision frequencies for all charge states of the sodium ions and the lower limit of the helium plasma density. The ion-ion collision frequencies of high charge state ions are shown to be at least on the order of 1–10 MHz and the plasma density is estimated to be on the order of 1011 cm−3 or higher. The experimental results are compared to simulations of the 23Na1+ capture into t…
Three beta-decaying states in 128In and 130In resolved for the first time using Penning-trap techniques
2020
Isomeric states in 128In and 130In have been studied with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the IGISOL facility. By employing state-of-the-art ion manipulation techniques, three different beta-decaying states in 128In and 130In have been separated and their masses measured. JYFLTRAP was also used to select the ions of interest for identification at a post-trap decay spectroscopy station. A new beta-decaying high-spin isomer feeding the isomer in 128Sn has been discovered in 128In at 1797.6(20) keV. Shell-model calculations employing a CD-Bonn potential re-normalized with the perturbative G-matrix approach suggest this new isomer to be a 16⁺ spin-trap isomer. In 130In, the lowest-lying (10⁻) isom…
Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry — A new tool for measuring highly charged ions in an electron beam ion trap
1995
Abstract Fourier transform-ion cyclotron mass spectrometry has been applied to the study of highly charged ions produced and confined in an electron beam ion trap. Measurements of the relative ion abundance of hydrogenlike and bare krypton ions were made and compared to the abundance ratios determined with standard X-ray techniques. Good agreement was found establishing the reliability of the method as a new tool in highly charged ion research.
Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer
2018
The Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance (PI-ICR) technique has been commissioned at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. This technique is based on projecting the ion motion in the Penning trap onto a position-sensitive multichannel-plate ion detector. Mass measurements of stable 85 Rb $ ^{+}$ and 87 Rb $ ^{+}$ ions with well-known mass values show that relative uncertainties $ \Delta m/m \leq 7\cdot 10^{-10}$ are possible to reach with the PI-ICR technique at JYFLTRAP. The significant improvement both in resolving power and in precision compared to the conventional Time-of-Flight Ion Cyclotron Resonance technique will enable measurements of close-lying isomeric states and …
New approaches to stored cluster ions
2003
Ion traps are “wall-less containers” which allow the extended storage of selected species. During the storage various interaction steps may be repeatedly applied. To this end no further hardware has to be added - in contrast to beam experiments. In this progress report two examples of recent developments are presented: the experiments have been performed with metal clusters stored in a Penning (ion cyclotron resonance) trap. A new experimental scheme has been developed which allows precision measurements of the dissociation energies of polyatomic species. It has been triggered by investigations on the delayed photodissociation of stored metal clusters. However, the technique is also readily…
