Combined High Dose and Temperature Radiation Effects on Multimode Silica-Based Optical Fibers

International audience; We investigate the response of Ge-doped, P-doped, pure-silica, or Fluorine-doped fibers to extreme environments combining doses up to MGy(SiO $_{{{2}}}$) level of 10 keV X-rays and temperatures between 25 C and 300 C . First, we evaluate their potential to serve either as parts of radiation tolerant optical or optoelectronic systems or at the opposite, for the most sensitive ones, as punctual or distributed dosimeters. Ionizing radiation effects on Non Volatile Read Only Memory cells

Threshold voltage (V-th) and drain-source current (I-DS) behaviour of nitride read only memories (NROM) were studied both in situ during irradiation or after irradiation with photons and ions. V-th loss fluctuations are well explained by the same Weibull statistics regardless of the irradiation species and total dose. Results of drain current measurements in-situ during irradiation with photons and ions reveal a step-like increase of I-DS with the total irradiation dose. A brief physical explanation is also provided.
Determination of methemoglobin in human blood after ionising radiation by EPR

In the present work presents results of investigations of radiation influence on blood of patients examined by radio-isotopes diagnosis (Tc 99m ), blood of Chernobyl clean-up workers and human blood irradiated by LINAC using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). The EPR spectroscopy reveals information on electronic states of transition metal ions, particularly Fe 3+ in different spin states. It is shown that EPR spectra of blood of patients before examination has signal from metal-protein transferrin (g=4.3) and after administration of radio- isotope proves signal of Fe 3+ (methemaglobin) in the high spin state (g=6.0). Twofold coordinated Ge defects induced by gamma-ray irradiation in Ge-doped SiO2

We report an experimental study by photoluminescence, optical absorption and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance measurements on the effects of exposure of Ge-doped amorphous SiO2 to gamma ray radiation at room temperature. We have evidenced that irradiation at doses of the order of 1 MGy is able to generate Ge-related defects, recognizable from their optical properties as twofold coordinated Ge centers. Until now, such centers, responsible for photosensitivity of Ge-doped SiO2, have been induced only in synthesis procedures of materials. Total absorption spectroscopy study of the β decay of Br86 and Rb91

The beta decays of 86Br and 91Rb have been studied using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. The radioactive nuclei were produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla and further purified using the JYFLTRAP. 86Br and 91Rb are considered high priority contributors to the decay heat in reactors. In addition 91Rb was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam et al. assuming that this decay was well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results shows that both decays were suffering from the Pandemonium effect and that the results of Rudstam et al. should be renormalized.
'beta'-decay studies of neutron-rich 'TL', 'PB', and 'BI' isotopes

The fragmentation of relativistic uranium projectiles has been exploited at the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung laboratory to investigate the β decay of neutron-rich nuclei just beyond 208Pb. This paper reports on β-delayed γ decays of 211-213Tl, 215Pb, and 215-219Bi de-exciting states in the daughters 211-213Pb, 215Bi, and 215-219Po. The resulting partial level schemes, proposed with the help of systematics and shell-model calculations, are presented. The role of allowed Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden β transitions in this mass region is discussed. © 2014 American Physical Society.
Discrimination of LINAC photon and sunlight contributions in watch glass analyzed by means of thermoluminescence

Abstract The research described in this paper shows how to extract from the glow curves of watch glasses exposed to LINAC photons and sunlight a contribution sensitive to LINAC photons dose. As first step, the dependence of the TL signal due to sunlight on the exposure duration was studied and a signal saturation was observed after about 20 weeks. The comparison of TL signals due to solar light and to LINAC photons highlights a partial overlap of the two signals. Abstract At present in slow neutron imaging an active layer of an imaging plate IP contains a mixture of storage phosphors, usually BaFBr:Eu 2+ used for imaging of X-rays, and a neutron converter material, usually Gd 2 O 3 , LiF. A novel Li-containing luminescent material perspective for a direct neutron conversion and storage is discussed. Irradiation of LiBaF 3 crystals results in generation of Frenkel defect pairs and creation of F-type centres responsible for three absorption bands in UV-and visible spectral region. Because photo-stimulation in each of these absorption bands leads to bleaching of induced absorption, the F-type colour centres are convenient for storage of radiation dose.…

The discrimination of the radiation quality, which is related to the linear energy transfer (LET), interests various fields such as radiobiology, astronautic space research, radiotherapy research and accidental dosimetry.
