Impact of biocide treatments on the bacterial communities of the Lascaux Cave.

2009

The Lascaux Cave contains a remarkable set of paintings from the Upper Palaeolithic. Shortly after discovery in 1940, the cave was modified for public viewing and, in 2001, was invaded by a Fusarium solani species complex. Benzalkonium chloride was used from 2001 to 2004 to eliminate the fungal outbreak. In this study, we carried out a sampling in most of the cave halls and galleries. Sequence analysis and isolation methods detected that the most abundant genera of bacteria were Ralstonia and Pseudomonas. We suggest that, as a result of years of benzalkonium chloride treatments, the indigenous microbial community has been replaced by microbial populations selected by biocide application.

Monitoring complex bacterial communities using culture-independent molecular techniques: application to soil environment

2000

Over the last decade, important advances in molecular biology led to the development of culture-independent approaches to describing bacterial communities. These new strategies, based on the analysis of DNA directly extracted from environmental samples, circumvent the steps of isolation and culturing of bacteria, which are known for their selectivity leading to a non-representative view of the extent of bacterial diversity. This review provides an overview of the potentials and limitations of some molecular approaches currently used in microbial ecology. Examples of applications to the study of indigenous soil microbial community illustrate the feasibility and the power of such approaches.

High maternal species density mediates unidirectional heterospecific matings inCalopteryxdamselflies

2012

Hybridization is a well-known phenomenon, but there are still relatively few studies addressing the question of reproductive isolation between related sympatric animal species with largely overlapping ranges. Population density, relative abundance, and operational sex ratio (OSR) are among the factors known to have an influence on the frequency of heterospecific matings in sympatric populations. Here we had two aims. First, we used microsatellite markers and field observations to study the frequency of hybrids, and backcrosses, and the rate of heterospecific matings between two sympatric damselfly species Calopteryx splendens (Harris, 1780) and Calopteryx virgo (Linne, 1758). Second, we inv…

FORMA URBANA TRA DISCONTINUITA' E DISTANZA

2021

With the belief that only by adhering to a wide and general theory on the composition of its structure, it is possible to proceed to the manipulation of even the most minute of its parts, the essay tends to develop a thought on the idea of the shape of the urban organism aimed at composing a settlement grammar to define a suitable syntax that is then projected to assign an identity to the peri-urban areas. Drawing on references that have already expressed a stance on the matter, to be found throughout the text is the endorsement of an idea of densification linked to the expansion and completion of existing manufactured fragments to yield clusters on the remains of what is left of the origin…

Isolation, structure elucidation, and biological evaluation of the unusual heterodimer chrysoxanthone from the ascomycete IBWF11-95A

2009

Chrysoxanthone, an unusual heterodimer of blennolide A and 2-hydroxychrysophanol linked through a diaryl ether bridge, was isolated from mycelia of the ascomycete IBWF11-95A grown in submerged culture. Its structure was elucidated by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The metabolite shows antibacterial activity against different species with MIC values between 2.5 and 20 μg/mL while also inhibiting the growth of several fungi.

Fixed point theory in partial metric spaces via φ-fixed point’s concept in metric spaces

2014

Abstract Let X be a non-empty set. We say that an element x ∈ X is a φ-fixed point of T, where φ : X → [ 0 , ∞ ) and T : X → X , if x is a fixed point of T and φ ( x ) = 0 . In this paper, we establish some existence results of φ-fixed points for various classes of operators in the case, where X is endowed with a metric d. The obtained results are used to deduce some fixed point theorems in the case where X is endowed with a partial metric p. MSC:54H25, 47H10.

Proper 1-ball contractive retractions in Banach spaces of measurable functions

2005

In this paper we consider the Wosko problem of evaluating, in an infinite-dimensional Banach space X, the infimum of all k > 1 for which there exists a k-ball contractive retraction of the unit ball onto its boundary. We prove that in some classical Banach spaces the best possible value 1 is attained. Moreover we give estimates of the lower H-measure of noncompactness of the retractions we construct. 1. Introduction Let X be an infinite-dimensional Banach space with unit closed ball B(X) and unit sphere S(X). It is well known that, in this setting, there is a retraction of B(X) onto S(X), that is, a continuous mapping R : B(X) ! S(X) with Rx = x for all x 2 S(X). In (4) Benyamini and Sternf…

Fractal Dimension Logarithmic Differences Method for Low Voltage Series Arc Fault Detection

2021

Series arc faults introduce singularities in the current signal and changes over time. Fractal dimension can be used to characterize the dynamic behaviour of the current signal by providing a degree of signal chaos. This measure of irregularity exhibits changes in signal behaviour that can suitably be used as a basis for series arc fault detection. In this paper, an efficient low voltage series arc fault detection method based on the logarithmic differences of the estimate of the fractal dimension of the current signal using the multiresolution length-based method is presented. The discrete wavelet transform and the hard thresholding denoising with the universal threshold are also used. Exp…
