Abstract A genomic library from Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. cremoris (Lmc) in Escherichia coli was screened for α-acetolactate synthase (ALS) activity using a phenotypic test detecting the production of acetolactate or related C 4 derivatives (diacetyl, acetoin or 2,3-butanediol) in the culture. Four recombinant E. coli clones, with plasmids containing overlapping DNA fragments and displaying anabolic ALS activity, were selected. This activity is encoded by an ilvB gene belonging to a putative operon which contains genes highly similar to the genes of the branched chain amino acid (BCAA) operon of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis. A low plating efficiency for measles virus was obtained when arginine, threonine and isoleucine were omitted from Eagle's basal medium and a stimulatory effect on the plaque production was produced by increasing the concentration up to 0.5 mm of arginine and glutamine. However, of all amino acids in Eagle's basal medium, only methionine was found to be essential for the synthesis of infectious progeny virus. Omission of any one of the other amino acids from the culture medium permitted limited virus production, but none whatever could be detected in the absence of mediummethionine. The paper shows throught some examples the foundamental characters of the sicilian landscape, that in some particular areas of the region is designed, bulit and modelled with different stone materials. The island of Favignana is completely dominated by calcareous stone that create relations with the "locus" identity. Caged common lake mussels (Anodonta piscinalis) have been used in the monitoring of organochlorine compounds in pulp and paper mill recipient watercourses of Finland annually from 1984 to 1998. Statistically significant decreasing trends of chlorophenols and chloroguaiacols originating from chlorobleaching were observed in all recipients in parallel with the decreasing discharges from the mills. Metabolites of chlorophenols, chloroanisoles and chloroveratroles had no or slightly increasing trends. Elevated PCB concentrations were measured in four watercourses. The essential oil of Murraya paniculata L leaves from the mountains of the Central Region of Cuba, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Eighteen compounds, accounting for 95.1% of the oil were identified. The major component was β-caryophyllene (ca. 30%). The antioxidant activity of essential oil was evaluated against Cucurbita seed oil by peroxide, thiobarbituric acid and p-anisidine methods. The essential oil showed stronger antioxidant activity than that of butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene, but lower than that of propyl gallate. Do differences in chemical composition of stem and cap of Amanita muscaria fruiting bodies correlate with topsoil type?

Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) was investigated using a 1H NMR-based metabolomics approach. The caps and stems were studied separately, revealing different metabolic compositions. Additionally, multivariate data analyses of the fungal basidiomata and the type of soil were performed.
