Crystal structures are reported for various co-crystals of rccc-resorcarenes with triethylammonium chloride. Usually, two molecules of a C2v-symmetric tetraester 2 in the boat conformation are linked through four hydrogen-bonded chloride anions to give dimeric assemblies. Two of the chloride anions may be replaced by four hydrogen-bonded ethanol molecules in an otherwise similar structure. These assemblies, which consist of six or eight components, posses voluminous, negatively charged chambers in which two triethylammionium cations, 3+, are included as guests by strong electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Easy preparation of Cp*-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbenes and their coordination to rhodium and iridium

A simple high-yielding method for the preparation of a tetramethylcyclopentadienyl-NHC ligand is described. This ligand has been successfully coordinated to Rh and Ir. A related Cp*-NHC ligand with a -CH(2)CMePh- linker between the Cp* and the NHC is also described, together with its coordination to Rh and Ir. This latter ligand, affords the orthocyclometallation of the phenyl ring yielding a constrained structure in which the ligand is tridentate. All the complexes have been fully characterized and their crystal structures are described. Preliminary catalytic results on the beta-alkylation of secondary alcohols and N-alkylation of aniline with primary alcohols are also reported.

The enantiomeric resolution of the fungicides uniconazole and diniconazole was performed using electrokinetic chromatography with cyclodextrins as pseudostationary phase (CD-EKC). A systematic evaluation of several chiral selectors was made. The anionic derivative carboxymethylated-gamma-cyclodextrin (CM-gamma-CD) was found to be the most appropriate for the enantioseparation of fungicides among all cyclodextrins tested. The influence of some experimental conditions such as nature and buffer pH, chiral selector concentration, and temperature on the enantiomeric separation of the compounds studied was also investigated. AbstractThis paper studies the cytotoxic effect induced by the topoisomerase I inhibitor camptothecin in human osteosarcoma Saos-2 cells, which lack p53 and contain a non-functional form of the product of the retinoblastoma gene, pRb. Cytotoxicity induced by camptothecin was dose- and time-dependent; the treatment with 100 nM camptothecin reduced cell viability by 50% at 32 h and by 75% at 72 h of exposure. The cytotoxic effect was caused by apoptosis, as ascertained by morphological evidence, acridine orange-ethidium bromide staining and flow cytometric analysis. The Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed [3 + 2]-annulation reaction between cyclopropenones and donor–acceptor cyclopropanes is described. The process leads directly to the formation of 4-oxaspiro[2.4]hept-1-ene derivatives in good to excellent reaction yields. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the [3 + 2]-annulation pathway is strongly preferred over the possible [3 + 3]-process.

Decaborane(14), nido-B10H14, is the major commercially available molecular building block in boron cluster chemistry. The condensation of two such {nido-B10} blocks gives the known isomers of B18H22 – a molecule used in the fabrication of p-type semiconductors and capable of blue laser emission. Ab initio methods were utilized in a gas-phase systematic conformational search of bilirubin conformers. The whole molecule was divided into four fragments. Most stable conformers of them were employed to build 196 conformers of the complete bilirubin molecule. Initial geometries were optimized using HF/3-21G level of theory and the minimum energy conformers were then reoptimized at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. Ridge-tile conformer was the most stable one, in perfect agreement with X-ray data. Treatment of an equimolar mixture of stilbene 7 and cinnamyl alcohol 8 with silver carbonate in acetone–benzene afforded a ca. 2 : 1 : 2 : 1 mixture of the stilbenolignan (±)-aiphanol (1) and congeners 2–4 each of which show significant anti-angiogenic and COX-2 inhibitory properties.

In recent research, apolipoprotein-E (apoE) polymorphism has been shown to influence the formation of neurofibrillary changes and the accumulation of beta/A4-amyloid, the histopathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Clinical studies associate the apoE allele epsilon4 with earlier onset of the disease, although the clinical speed of progression remains unchanged.
