Background Flow cytometry has become a choice methodology for microbiological research. However, functional cytometric assays in live bacteria are still limited. This is due, in part, to the cell wall impairing penetration of vital dyes in bacteria, thus imposing permeabilization procedures. These manipulations may affect cell physiology, provoke cell aggregation or lysis, and they are time-consuming. Cladribine exerts an immunomodulatory effect on human and murine dendritic cells

Cladribine is a purine nucleoside analog developed to treat lymphoid malignancies. Reported therapeutic benefits for the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis indicate additional immunomodulatory effects beyond the well-characterized cytotoxic activity causing lymphopenia. Here, we demonstrate that cladribine reduces the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines by murine and human dendritic cells, the most potent antigen-presenting cells. This compound also modulates the expression of the activation markers CD86 and MHC II. Combination of phenolic acids and essential oils against Listeria monocytogenes

Abstract Listeria monocytogenes is a psychrotrophic pathogen widely distributed in meat processing plants. Listeriosis presents very low morbidity, but very high mortality rates. Several outbreaks involving this bacterium have been reported due to the consumption of refrigerated meat and dairy products. Chemical reduction of the mycotoxin beauvericin using allyl isothiocyanate.

Abstract Beauvericin (BEA) is a bioactive compound produced by the secondary metabolism of several Fusarium strains and known to have various biological activities. This study investigated the reduction of BEA present in the concentration of 25 mg/kg on a solution model (phosphate buffer saline at pH 4 and 7) and in wheat flour using allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) as a reactant. IDENTIFICATION OF LECTINS IN THE KINETIDS OFTETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS

Previously we described lectin-like molecules in the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis; by application of synthetic neoglycoconjugates it is now shown that T. pyriformis contains considerable amounts of both a beta-D-glucose- and a lactose-specific lectin. No evidence for the presence of alpha-D-mannose-, alpha-D-galactose- or of alpha-L-fucose-specific lectins could be obtained. The two lectins, identified in T. pyriformis, are associated with the kinetids. During cell division the lectins disappear or become masked in the fission furrow. Separation of plasma membrane proteins of cultured human fibroblasts by affinity chromatography on bonded microparticulate silicas.

Abstract Adsorbents for high-performance affinity chromatography were prepared by bonding proteins and reactive Procion triazine dyes to 3-isothiocyanatopropyl- and 3-aminopropylsilicas. The materials prepared were used successfully in the separation of hydrophobic plasma membrane proteins of cultured human fibroblasts.
