Neutron skin and centrality classification in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

The concept of centrality in high-energy nuclear collisions has recently become a subject of an active debate. In particular, the experimental methods to determine the centrality that have given reasonable results for many observables in high-energy lead-lead collisions at the LHC have led to surprising behaviour in the case of proton-lead collisions. In this letter, we discuss the possibility to calibrate the experimental determination of centrality by asymmetries caused by mutually different spatial distributions of protons and neutrons inside the nuclei --- a well-known phenomenon in nuclear physics known as the neutron-skin effect.
Large eddy simulations on the effect of the irregular roughness shape on turbulent channel flows

Abstract Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are carried out to investigate on the mean flow in turbulent channel flows over irregular rough surfaces. Here the attention is focused to selectively investigate on the effect induced by crests or cavities of the roughness. The irregular shape is generated through the super-imposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitude and four different wave-lengths. The irregular roughness profile is reproduced along the spanwise direction in order to obtain a 2D rough shape. Conservative upper limits on WIMP annihilation cross section from Fermi-LAT $γ$-rays

The spectrum of an isotropic extragalactic {\gamma}-ray background (EGB) has been measured by the Fermi-LAT telescope at high latitudes. Two new models for the EGB are derived from the subraction of unresolved point sources and extragalactic diffuse processes, which could explain from 30% to 70% of the Fermi-LAT EGB. Within the hypothesis that the two residual EGBs are entirely due to the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles in the Galactic halo, we obtain stringent upper limits on their annihilation cross section. Interpretation of EXAFS in ReO3using molecular dynamics simulations

Temperature dependent Re L3-edge EXAFS signals from perovskite-type cubic ReO3 have been successfully interpreted using a combination of classical NVT molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio multiple-scattering approach. The force field model, required for MD simulations, has been determined by fitting the Re-O and O-O pairwise interatomic potentials to a set of experimental data (lattice parameter, elastic constants and bulk modulus) and phonon frequencies, theoretically calculated from the first principles at high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. Materials may show anisotropic properties on different crystal directions and this is also the case of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS). To take advantage of the materials anisotropy one concept of interest is 'orientation engineering' in thin films. This can be realized through the control of the film-substrate lattice relationship. Some examples in this regard are presented in this work and through comparative analysis we try to evaluate the viability of this approach and of he entcountered problems. Damping by bulk and shear viscosity for confined acoustic phonons of a spherical virus in water

International audience; A sphere-like virus in water is modeled as a homogeneous isotropic elastic continuum sphere in contact with an infinite viscous compressible Newtonian fluid. The frequencies and damping of the confined vibrational modes of the sphere are calculated for the material parameters of a virus in water. While the effects of viscosity are found to be negligible for a virus-like sphere of macroscopic size, for nanoscale viruses both the frequency and damping of the vibrational modes are significantly affected by the viscosity of the water. Furthermore, both shear viscosity and bulk viscosity play an important role.
N- and O-methylation of sphingomyelin markedly affects its membrane properties and interactions with cholesterol

We have prepared palmitoyl sphingomyelin (PSM) analogs in which either the 2-NH was methylated to NMe, the 3-OH was methylated to OMe, or both were methylated simultaneously. The aim of the study was to determine how such modifications in the membrane interfacial region of the molecules affected interlipid interactions in bilayer membranes. Measuring DPH anisotropy in vesicle membranes prepared from the SM analogs, we observed that methylation decreased gel-phase stability and increased fluid phase disorder, when compared to PSM. It has been also pointed out that macroscopic interference, occurring when two revivals associated to different molecules time overlap, can be used to achieve measurements with picosecond time resolution. Single Gold Nanoparticle Growth Monitored in situ

The novel fastSPS setup is used to study the growth process of rodshaped gold nanoparticles in the presence of surfactant molecules. It is observed that the particles grow mainly in the direction of the short rod axis, resulting in a decrease of the aspect ratio. This is, to the best of my knowledge, the first real-time optical observation of nanoparticle growth on a single-particle level (results were published in reference ). In collaboration with Olaf Schubert the nanoparticle growth was also monitored using the novel RotPOL setup. Here a decrease of the average polarization anisotropy \(PA\) is observed.
