Production and detection of atomic hexadecapole at Earth's magnetic field

Anisotropy of atomic states is characterized by population differences and coherences between Zeeman sublevels. It can be efficiently created and probed via resonant interactions with light, the technique which is at the heart of modern atomic clocks and magnetometers. Recently, nonlinear magneto-optical techniques have been developed for selective production and detection of higher polarization moments, hexadecapole and hexacontatetrapole, in the ground states of the alkali atoms. A Precessing Ferromagnetic Needle Magnetometer

A ferromagnetic needle is predicted to precess about the magnetic field axis at a Larmor frequency $\Omega$ under conditions where its intrinsic spin dominates over its rotational angular momentum, $N\hbar \gg I\Omega$ ($I$ is the moment of inertia of the needle about the precession axis and $N$ is the number of polarized spins in the needle). In this regime the needle behaves as a gyroscope with spin $N\hbar$ maintained along the easy axis of the needle by the crystalline and shape anisotropy. Effect of laboratory procedures on the integrity of a sandy-loam soil sample for bi-directional measurement of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Practical and validated methods to measure anisotropy of saturated, Ks, or field-saturated, Kfs, soil hydraulic conductivity on a single soil sample are still lacking. The objective of this investigation was to test factors affecting anisotropy measured in a sandy-loam soil by the constant-head laboratory permeameter and the modified cube method. The ratio, RK, between the conductivity results obtained with a long (6 h) and a short (0.5 h) duration run varied from a minimum of 0.29 to a maximum of 0.88 with the considered experimental procedure, differing by both the employed constant-head device (Mariotte bottle, siphon) and the initial soil water content (unsaturated, saturated). Wulff shape characterizations in overdetermined anisotropic elliptic problems

We study some overdetermined problems for possibly anisotropic degenerate elliptic PDEs, including the well-known Serrin's overdetermined problem, and we prove the corresponding Wulff shape characterizations by using some integral identities and just one pointwise inequality. Our techniques provide a somehow unified approach to this variety of problems.

Stress concentration for closely located inclusions in nonlinear perfect conductivity problems

We study the stress concentration, which is the gradient of the solution, when two smooth inclusions are closely located in a possibly anisotropic medium. The governing equation may be degenerate of $p-$Laplace type, with $1<p \leq N$. We prove optimal $L^\infty$ estimates for the blow-up of the gradient of the solution as the distance between the inclusions tends to zero.

Abstract In this paper we find the Euler–Lagrange equation for the anisotropic least gradient problem inf { ∫ Ω ϕ ( x , D u ) : u ∈ B V ( Ω ) , u | ∂ Ω = f } being ϕ a metric integrand and f ∈ L 1 ( ∂ Ω ) . We also characterize the functions of ϕ -least gradient as those whose boundary of the level set is ϕ -area minimizing in Ω .

A class of shear deformable isotropic elastic plates with parametrically variable warping shapes

A homogeneous shear deformable isotropic elastic plate model is addressed in which the normal transverse fibers are allowed to rotate and to warp in a physically consistent manner specified by a fixed value of a real non-negative warping parameter ω. On letting ω vary continuously (at fixed load and boundary conditions), a continuous family of shear deformable plates Pω is generated, which spans from the Kirchhoff plate at the lower limit ω=0, to the Mindlin plate at the upper limit ω=∞; for ω=2, Pω identifies with the third-order Reddy plate. Rotation of methyl radicals in a solid krypton matrix

Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements were carried out to study the rotation of methyl radicals (CH(3)) in a solid krypton matrix at 17-31 K temperature range. The radicals were produced by dissociating methane by plasma bursts generated by a focused 193 nm excimer laser radiation during the krypton gas condensation on the substrate. The ESR spectrum exhibits only isotropic features at the temperature range examined, and the intensity ratio between the symmetric (A) and antisymmetric (E) spin state lines exhibits weaker temperature dependence than in a solid argon matrix. Two mononuclear cobalt(II) compounds of formula [Co(dmphen)2(OOCPh)]ClO4·1/2H2O·1/2CH3OH (1) and [Co(dmbipy)2(OOCPh)]ClO4 (2) (dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, dmbipy = 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and HOOCPh = benzoic acid) are prepared and magnetostructurally investigated. Each cobalt(II) ion is six-coordinate with a distorted octahedral CoN4O2 environment. The complex cations are interlinked leading to supramolecular chains (1) and pairs (2) that grow along the crystallographic c-axis with racemic mixtures of (Δ,Λ)-Co units.
