Frictional effects in structural behavior of no-end-connected steel-jacketed RC columns: Experimental results and new approaches to model numerical a…

2017

Steel jacketing of reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a common retrofitting technique used to restore bearing and deformation capacity of buildings presenting structural deficiencies. For practical reasons, steel angles are in several cases arranged leaving a gap with the end beams or slabs. Despite this disconnection, the angles are still able to support a non-negligible portion of load because of the frictional forces developed along the column-angle contact interface. In these cases, the definition of computational numerical and analytical models for the assessment of reinforced cross sections becomes more complex and must be handled with care. The actual load-carrying capacity of the a…

Does Obsolescence Matter? The Real Questions of Genetic Enhancement

2019

In his article, Robert Sparrow (2019) builds his arguments on a precondition of rapid technical progress in gene-editing technologies on one hand and on the implication that that gene-editing techn...

Risk Indicators and Road Accident Analysis for the Period 2012–2016

2017

Road accidents are a major societal issue for every country. The purpose of this paper is to assess the number of traffic and road accidents depending on a series of variables (collision mode, road configuration, conditions of occurrence, road category, type of vehicle involved, personal factors, and length of time of the driving license) in Romania from 2012–2016. The analysis of the road accident trend identifies the causes of accidents, road safety performance indicators, and risk indicators. Having these identified data, a framework is proposed for improving the road safety system and reducing accidents. The Romanian Police, the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) in Romania, and the…

Social Problems, Entrepreneurial Behaviour and NEETs

2021

Since its origins, the idea about the NEET collective (a diverse group composed mostly of young people who neither study nor work) has been linked to school failure, unemployment and occupational vulnerability. However, in the last decade it has attracted considerable attention by educational and occupational policies. These policies, guided by the logic of activation, have been introducing entrepreneurship-based programmes addressed to NEETs, orienting their career paths towards self-employment and business creation. This chapter explores the complex binomial between NEETs and entrepreneurship and studies its feasibility through an analysis of the programmes that have been initiated by int…

Exploring Environmental and Entrepreneurial Antecedents of Social Performance in Spanish Sports Clubs: A Symmetric and Asymmetric Approach

2020

The social function of non-profit sports clubs is undeniable, so analyzing the factors that influence their performance is vital. The aim of this study is to understand the influence of entrepreneurial factors (entrepreneurial orientation) and environmental factors (dynamism, hostility and complexity) on social performance using a symmetrical (Hierarchical regression model) and asymmetrical (qualitative comparative analysis) approach. The social performance of this particular type of organization is of great importance in an environment where sustainability from a social point of view is increasingly on the agenda of governments, organizations and society in general. A total of 209 Spanish …

Let the countdown begin — Aging experiences of young adults in countdown blogs

2012

Abstract This paper examines a particular blog phenomenon that has not yet received much attention: Countdown blogs which are written before a significant birthday (in this paper, it is the thirtieth birthday). The bloggers fill the remaining time, often a year, with the accomplishment of particular tasks, reflections on their lives or photo projects. In their blogs, the young adults demonstrate an age awareness that is often overlooked in aging studies. The paper argues that young adults use countdown blogs to cope with their aging experiences and, in doing so, they apply a particular economic rhetoric and emerge as entrepreneurs of themselves – an identity concept that Foucault presented …

Linking Women Entrepreneurship with Social Entrepreneurship

2011

In recent times, the number of women entrepreneurs in the world has grown steadily, motivated by necessity or by reasons related to the identification and exploitation of a gap in the market via which they can exploit and develop the experience and knowledge acquired. However, a new phenomenon is emerging in the field of entrepreneurship: the creation of organizations to attain social goals. It is precisely within this new framework that women can take on a relevant role due to a certain extent to a greater sensitivity towards the social problems in their environment. In this paper, we discuss several cases of women entrepreneurs that have allowed us to relate the motives for entrepreneuria…

Biological Nutrient Removal and Fouling Phenomena in a University of Cape Town Membrane Bioreactor Treating High Nitrogen Loads

2013

The behavior of a University of Cape Town (UCT) membrane bioreactor (MBR) system was investigated for use in biological nutrient removal from real wastewater. The pilot plant was in operation for a period of 165 days, during which an extensive data gathering campaign was conducted. The pilot plant was started up by inoculating it with activated sludge from a nearby wastewater treatment plant, and it was fed by real municipal wastewater characterized by high organic nitrogen concentrations attributable to discharges from industrial wastewater and sporadic landfill leachate. Carbon and biological nutrient removal processes, a sludge production process, and a membrane fouling mechanism were an…

Correction: DAPIT Over-Expression Modulates Glucose Metabolism and Cell Behaviour in HEK293T Cells

2015

Introduction Diabetes Associated Protein in Insulin-sensitive Tissues (DAPIT) is a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase and has also been found to associate with the vacuolar H+-ATPase. Its expression is particularly high in cells with elevated aerobic metabolism and in epithelial cells that actively transport nutrients and ions. Deletion of DAPIT is known to induce loss of mitochondrial ATP synthase but the effects of its over-expression are obscure. Results In order to study the consequences of high expression of DAPIT, we constructed a transgenic cell line that constitutively expressed DAPIT in human embryonal kidney cells, HEK293T. Enhanced DAPIT expression decreased mtDNA content and …

Thermodynamics of Rubber Elasticity

2001

A thermodynamic study of an isotropic rubber band under uniaxial stress is presented on the basis of its equation of state. The behavior of the rubber band is compared with both that of an ideal elastomer and that of an ideal gas, considering the generalized Joule's law as the ideality criterion.
