Fluorescence and amplified spontaneous emission of glass forming compounds containing styryl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene fragment

Potential of glassy films of newly synthesised low molecular weight organic molecules for light amplification and lasing applications has been investigated by analysing fluorescence, transient differential absorption and amplified spontaneous emission properties. These non-symmetric and symmetric molecules contain styryl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene fragment with three different electron acceptor groups: dicyanomethylene, barbituric acid, indene-1,3-dione. Fluorescence quantum yields of the investigated compounds in solutions are between 0.32 and 0.54, while they drop down by an order of magnitude in thin solid films. AbstractA set of C3N4 samples has been prepared by using melamine, cyanuric acid and barbituric acid as the precursors. The materials were subjected both to physical and chemical characterization and were used as photocatalysts for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols in water suspension under UV and visible irradiation. The photoactivity of the materials versus the partial oxidation of four substituted benzyl alcohols was investigated. The type and position of the substituents in the aromatic molecule influenced conversion and selectivity to the corresponding aldehyde. Binding abilities of new cyclodextrin-cucurbituril supramolecular hosts

Various combined techniques (UV–vis spectrophotometry, isothermal titration calorimetry, thermogravimetry, ESI-MS mass spectrometry, polarimetry and 1H NMR spectroscopy) were used in order to study the interaction between a new combined supramolecular host, namely a bow-tie-structured cyclodextrin–cucurbituril association solely held by non-covalent interactions, and a suitably selected guest, namely the N-(p-nitrophenyl)-1,8-diaminooctane hydrochloride. In particular, the use of different techniques highlighted the peculiar features of the possible host–guest supramolecular interactions under different concentration conditions.
Microwave-assisted synthesis of novel cyclodextrin–cucurbituril complexes

Microwave irradiation was successfully used in order to obtain stable supramolecular aggregates between cyclodextrins and cucurbiturils, without the participation of any long-chain common ‘molecular thread’ guest. These aggregates were characterised by means of various different techniques, namely NMR, thermogravimetry, polarimetry and ESI-MS. Cross-analysis of experimental data allowed us to obtain insights on the stoichiometries of the composites and their thermal stabilities. The possible structures of the composites are briefly discussed, as well as the actual nature of their intrinsic stability.

Development of MR active contrast agents via Parahydrogen Induced Polarization

Parahydrogen Induced Polarization provides dramatic MR signal enhancement that can be exploited for molecular imaging. This method allows amongst others for Magnetic Resonance Imaging of 13C and 15N, which is usually constrained by the low MR sensitivity of these nuclei. By combining hydrogenation of barbiturates with parahydrogen under special experimental conditions (PASADENA under pressure) with a polarization transfer sequence we demonstrate the transfer of the initial 1H polarization to 13C.
