“Practicing care in qualitative organizational research: moral responsibility and legitimacy in a study of immigration management”
2021
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the reciprocal relations between the caregiving imparted by immigration centre managers and the role of the researcher in responding to the care that is given by managerial caregivers. To enable this, we draw on a feminist theory of care ethics that considers individuals as relationally interdependent.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis draws on a semi-structured interview study involving 20 Finnish immigration reception centre managers.FindingsInsight is generated by reflecting on moments of care that arise between research participants and the researcher in a study of immigration centre management. University-wide, top-down curriculum reform at a Finnish university: perceptions of the academic staff
2021
This study examines academic staff’s perceptions of a university-wide, top-down curriculum reform in terms of the management of the reform, the support provided by the university’s administration, and the utilisation of the university’s guidelines. Differences between faculties are also scrutinised. The study was conducted at a multidisciplinary public research university in Finland using the survey method. The data (n = 394) consisted of academic staff’s responses to multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Correlation coefficients, exploratory factor analyses, and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilised to analyse the quantitative data. Responses to the open-ended questions …

Factors affecting the success of English language human resources training
2014
Käsillä olevan tutkimuksen tarkoitus on ollut tutkia tekijöitä jotka vaikuttavat englannin kielen henkilöstökoulutuksen onnistumiseen. Tutkimuksen yleisenä viitekehyksenä toimi humanistinen johtaminen, jossa keskiössä vaikuttavuuden saavuttamiseksi on henkilöstön oppimisen korostaminen kaikissa henkilöstön kehittämistoimissa. Onnistunut koulutus määriteltiin tutkimuksessa koulutuksena, jonka henkilöstö koki merkittäväksi oppimisko- kemukseksi tai muulla tavoin hyödylliseksi työnsä kannalta. Tutkimuksen lähtökohtana toimi teoriapohjainen ”Merkittävät oppimiskokemukset vie- raan kielen henkilöstökoulutuksessa” -malli, jossa yhdistyi aikuiskoulutuksen, vieraan kie- len oppimisen sekä työpaikka…
Acculturation of foreign IT workers in Japan from a cognitive and business management viewpoint
2016
This dissertation investigates expatriate IT workers located in Japan in the contexts of their acculturation and thinking about workplace and business negotiations. Case studies of individual actors supported by surveys were chosen as the methods to gather data leading to findings about how expatriates develop in Japan, including their ability to adjust, accept, and reject schemata about business management situations. Individuals were chosen as a unit of study because they are the key figures who decide the economic fate of companies. Schemata were chosen as a study focus in the later articles because they are the cognitive location of information about home and host culture and come into …
Management practices in Finnish manufacturing establishments : evidence from FMOP
2018
Edistysaskeleet aineiston keräämisessä ovat nostaneet johtamiskäytännöt esiin osana vastausta kysymykseen tuottavuuseroista. Kvantitatiiviseen kyselytyökaluun perustuvat tutkimukset ovat löytäneet kumulatiivista näyttöä johtamiskäytäntöjen kyvystä selittää tuottavuuseroja. Kyseisen työkalun nimi on Management and Organizational Practices Survey. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan Suomen johtamis- ja organisaatiokäytäntöjen kyselyllä eli FMOP-kyselyllä kerätyn aineiston avulla Suomen tehdasteollisuuden toimipaikkojen johtamiskäytäntöjä. Tarkoituksena on selvittää, onko Suomessa tilastollisesti merkitseviä alueellisia eroja johtamiskäytäntöjen laadussa. Helsinki-Uusimaata verrataan muihin Suome…
Management Practices and Allocation of Employment: Evidence from Finnish Manufacturing
2020
We analyse variation in the management practices across countries and across regions within a country. For cross-country comparisons we use the Finnish Management and Organizational Practices Survey (FMOP) to calculate a management score for Finnish manufacturing that is compared to corresponding measures obtained from similar data in the US and Germany. Scores measured by unweighted averages of the establishments in these countries show that Finland is only slightly behind the US and on par with those of Germany. With the FMOP data, we then perform an Olley-Pakes decomposition of the management score using a moment-based estimation procedure. Our decomposition shows no statistically signif…
Practitioners’ Perceptions of Co-Product Allocation Methods in Biorefinery Development—A Case Study of the Austrian Pulp and Paper Indust…
2022
The utilization of coproducts is a strategy that can be applied to increase the economic and environmental performance of industrial processes and thus reach an objective targeted in several environmental policies. In multi-output production processes, allocation needs to be performed to assess the products’ environmental and economic performance. It is crucial to choose an adequate allocation method, because this choice has been shown to strongly influence overall outcomes. Consequently, rash choices can lead to poor decision-making. Various ways to apply and combine allocation methods can be found in the academic literature, but it is often difficult to find sufficient guidance on how to …
