Josephson junctions and superconducting field effect transistors based on epitaxial Bi2Sr2Can-1CunO2(n+2) thin films

1998

Abstract Josephson junctions based on thin films of the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ compound show IcRn products compatible with YBa2Cu3O7−δ samples. Using quasiparticle tunneling experiments we found evidence for a superconductor–insulator–superconductor tunneling process via localized states in the barrier. The Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ compound is investigated regarding possible applications in superconducting field effect devices. We present thin films of four unit cells thickness that are superconducting at 58 K. An inverted metal–insulator–superconductor structure was prepared. From the modulation of the normal state resistance we estimate a carrier density of 7×1019 cm−3 for a superconducting sample. The…

Secon…

The School of Architecture of Palermo since its founding in 1779 with the creation of the chair of Civil Architecture entrusted to Joseph Venantius Marvuglia has become the place of testing exploration of issues related to professional practice and the art of building. Carlo Giachery Professor of Static and Civil Architecture from 1837 to 1865 is the first to feel the deep crisis of the educational system of the school of architecture of Palermo. For him architecture and applied sciences to architecture found in their stereotomy confirmation of the existence of correspondent relationships in their evolutionary process. The notion of stereotomy taken by Carlo Giachery in teaching reconnects directly to the noble art of coupe des pierres. Taken together the teaching aids used to show a theoretical advance that Giachery inclined in the direction of elasticity of the materials. Noting the outcomes of teaching his students have the clear perception of how the teaching on stereotomy is the compendium of all the French tradition on the subject. With the establishment of the School of Application for Engineers and Architects in 1866 the steretomia seems to gradually lose interest in favor of the prevailing metal construction. All the wisdom of build which for centuries had been linked with art de la coupe des pierres gave way to new construction techniques and new materials.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Der Völkerfrühling von 1848/1849 – revolutionäre Gefahr oder republikanischer Durchbruch? Ästhetisch-historische Bilder

2022

The aim of this article is to present the revolutionary events of 1848/1849 in German states from the point of view of Joseph von Eichendorff and Theodor Opitz, which are based on their refl ections, experiences and reactions to this political and breakthrough coup. Eichendorff and Opitz present two different views on the events of the Spring of Nations. These two intellectuals and writers are linked by the last letter from Eichendorff to Theodor Opitz as well as the ideal of freedom, which became their life motto.

The feast of St. Joseph as well as an important and heartfelt religious celebration is in Salemi above all the "feast of the loaves"beautiful achievements of high artistic craftsmanship whose wisdom is handed down in the families and in the associations of women who for many months work to produce the enormous quantity of small and large forms of bread to cover the votive constructions that welcome the ritual of dinner. Thus the idea of proposing an "Ecomuseum of wheat and bread" in the Jesuit College was born enhancing and re-opening a space of great historical-architectural interest to the public. As part of the consolidated collaboration of the Municipality of Salemi with the Department of Architecture professors and students worked on a strategic design project for museum set-up and communication also open forms of participation and sharing with the various territorial actors in a sort of 'social conversation' with the protagonists and skills in the field. A collaboration with Polimi Desis_Lab of the Milan Polytechnic concerning the contribution of the 'design of services for social innovation' was also initiated on these aspects.Settore ICAR/13 - Disegno Industriale

Noisy dynamics in long and short Josephson junctions

The study of nonlinear dynamics in long Josephson junctions and the features of a particular kind of junction realized using a graphene layer, are the main topics of this research work. The superconducting state of a Josephson junction is a metastable state, and the switching to the resistive state is directly related to characteristic macroscopic quantities, such as the current the voltage across the junction, and the magnetic field through it. Noise sources can affect the mean lifetime of this superconducting metastable state, so that noise induced effects on the transient dynamics of these systems should be taken into account. The long Josephson junctions are investigated in the sine-Gor…

Magnetically excited breather modes in an overlap-geometry Josephson tunnel junction

2022

A scheme for the controlled generation of single traveling sine- Gordon breathers in a long Josephson junction is described. In the presence of dissipation, a direct current source, and thermal fluctuations, the theoretical analysis shows that, through the nonlinear supratransmission effect, tailored magnetic pulses at the junction’s edge can effectively yield breather modes only.

Oltre la ricerca del Graal, il divenire del mito

2014

A mythologist's study of the Graal cultural tradition. Using Francesco Zambon's recent Metamorfosi del Graal as his starting point, the author undertakes an analysis on the importance of the Graal in Western mystical, philosophical and literary traditions throughout time, from the impact of the medieval Graal stories on the matière de Bretagne and beyond (Troyes, Boron), to the appeal of this myth in modern times, including its occurrence on Richard Wagner, Martin Heidegger, Simone Weil, Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco.

Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers as Non-Classical Light Source for Microwave Quantum Illumination

2021

Abstract Detection of low-reflectivity objects can be enriched via the so-called quantum illumination procedure. In order that this quantum procedure outperforms classical detection protocols, entangled states of microwave radiation are initially required. In this paper, we discuss the role of Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs), based on circuit-QED components, as suitable sources of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state, a special signal-idler entangled state. The obtained wide bandwidth makes the JTWPA an ideal candidate for generating quantum radiation in quantum metrology and information processing applications.

«Bella mia fiamma, addio / Resta, o cara» tra Jommelli e Mozart: osservazioni e ipotesi sull’aria K. 528

2012

Mozart wrote the scena and aria K. 528 in Prague in 1787 for the singer Josepha Duschek. As previously known, this wonderful page is based on a text taken from “Cerere placata”, a “festa teatrale” created in Naples in 1772 by the man of letters and scientist Michele Sarcone and the renowned “maestro di cappella” Niccolò Jommelli to celebrate the birth of the first daughter of king Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. The article reconstructs in detail the circumstances of the Neapolitan performance, and shows that Jommelli’s setting of Titano’s recitative and aria “Bella mia fiamma, addio” / “Resta, o cara; acerba morte” enjoyed a large success and circulated as an autonomous piece. A comparison betwee…
