Pharmacological Screening of DifferentJuniperus oxycedrusL. Extracts

Methanol and dichloromethanol extracts of leaves and stems of Juniperus oxycedrus have been tested for their toxicity, analgesic, antiinflammatory and central effects. Both extracts showed low acute toxicity and decreased spontaneous motility. The methanol extract exhibited an analgesic effect in models of chemical, mechanical and thermal stimulation whereas dichloromethanol extract showed only a significant effect in models of pain induced by chemical stimulation. Both extracts showed a significant antiinflammatory activity and inhibition of the rat paw oedema induced by carrageenin.

SUMMARY The forests of Juniperus thurifera are peculiar ecosystems that typically grow on mountains and highplateaux of the western Mediterranean basin with dry and continental climates. Some previous surveys suggested that these forests house a rather distinctive epiphytic bryophyte flora. Epiphytic bryophyte communities were systematically sampled in 19 representative juniper forests, for the first time spanning all the distribution area of this conifer. The flora consists of 44 species (32 acrocarpous mosses, 10 pleurocarpous mosses and 2 liverworts). In vitro studies of methanol and dichloromethanol extracts ofJuniperus oxycedrus L.

The present study evaluated the effect of methanol and dichloromethanol extracts obtained from the leaves and stems of Juniperus oxycedrus against neurotransmitter-induced contraction in different isolated tissues of rats and guinea-pigs. Diverse concentrations of these extracts inhibit the concentration curve response to histamine, serotonin and acetylcholine. These results contribute to explaining the use of this plant in folk medicine. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Effects on Arterial Blood Pressure of Methanol and Dichloromethanol Extracts fromJuniperus oxycedrus L.

The present study analysed the effect of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts from Juniperus oxycedrus on arterial blood pressure in anaesthetized rats. The arterial blood pressure of normotensive rats was significantly reduced by the i.v. administration of both extracts. The hypotensive effect of these extracts was independent of the adrenergic system. These results may explain the vasorelaxing actions observed in other Juniperus species.
Morphogenesis in leaf and single-cell cultures of mature Juniperus oxycedrus

Single cells were mechanically isolated from leaf-derived callus of mature Juniperus oxycedrus L. These cells divided and gave rise to callus when plated on medium containing growth regulators. Best plating efficiency was obtained on a modified Schenk and Hildebrandt medium supplemented with 0.6 micro M 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 100 mg l(-1) casein hydrolyzate. Although single-cell-derived callus showed poor morphogenic potential, both adventitious shoots and embryogenic tissues differentiated from the callus. Viene segnalata per la prima volta la presenza di Juniperus sabina L. sul massiccio del Pollino, dove la specie è stata rinvenuta in habitat rupicolo in due stazioni ricadenti rispettivamente in territorio calabrese e lucano. Le stazioni vengono caratterizzate dal punto di vista floristico ed ecologico.

The effects of changes in the concentration of macronutrients on BA-induced caulogenesis from leaves of matureJuniperus oxycedrus cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog or Schenk and Hildebrandt media are reported. The bud-forming capacity of the explants depended mainly on the ratios among the levels of ammonium, nitrate, and potassium. The most favorable media formulations for differentiation of adventitious buds were those with nitrate:potassium, ammonium:potassium, and nitrate:ammonium ratios near 1, around 0.1, and between 9 and 15, respectively. The total ionic strength of the media limited bud induction, but only when a disequilibrium of these ratios was produced.

The morphogenetic capacity of matureJuniperus oxycedrus L. leaves cultured in vitro has been studied, noting nutritive, hormonal, and environmental factors inducing differentiation and development of adventitious shoots. Bud primordia formed directly from the leaves. Highest bud differentiation rates were obtained when the explants were cultured for at least 21 days on a modified Schenk and Hildebrandt solidified medium containing 0.5 μM benzyladenine under a 16-h photoperiod. Axillary shoot proliferation in cultures of explants from mature Juniperus oxycedrus trees.

We developed procedures for the micropropagation of Juniperus oxycedrus L. using shoot apices or nodal segments from mature plants. Of the media and explants examined, best culture establishment was obtained with shoot apices cultured on modified Schenk and Hildebrandt medium (SH medium) without growth regulators; however, shoot multiplication was only achieved when shoot apices isolated from shoots grown on SH medium without growth regulators were subcultured on SH medium containing 0.5 micro M benzyladenine. None of the auxins and methods tested for root induction provided satisfactory results.
