Age Differences in the Response of Willow Tits (Parus montanus ) to Conspecific Alarm Calls

2003

Predation is an important mortality factor in wintering birds. To counter this, birds produce alarm calls in the presence of predators which serve to warn conspecifics. In social hierarchical bird flocks, adults survive the winter better than juveniles and therefore survival strategies probably vary with social status. This study examined the differential responses to alarm calls by free-living willow tits, Parus montanus, in dominance-structured winter flocks in Finland. To explore the age-dependent differences in response to conspecific alarm calls, a series with three alarm calls was played to focal adults and juveniles while they sat in the middle section of a spruce branch. Immediately…

Canakinumab as first-line biological therapy in Still’s disease and differences between the systemic and the chronic-articular courses: Real-life exp…

2022

ObjectiveInterleukin (IL)-1 inhibitors are largely employed in patients with Still’s disease; in cases with refractory arthritis, IL-6 inhibitors have shown to be effective on articular inflammatory involvement. The aim of the present study is to assess any difference in the effectiveness of the IL-1β antagonist canakinumab prescribed as first-line biologic agent between the systemic and the chronic-articular Still’s disease.MethodsData were drawn from the retrospective phase of the AutoInflammatory Disease Alliance (AIDA) international registry dedicated to Still’s disease. Patients with Still’s disease classified according to internationally accepted criteria (Yamaguchi criteria and/or Fa…

Importance of Sampling Frequency to Detect Differential Timing of Migration: A Case Study with BlackcapsSylvia atricapilla

2009

Our aim was to assess to what extent detection of differential timing of passage in migrant birds depends on the sampling frequency (SF). We determined if Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla performed differential migration by age and sex when passing over N Iberia. We mist netted and ringed migrating Blackcaps at a stopover site, both during the autumn (2005) and the spring (2006) migrations. During autumn, adult female Blackcaps passed later than juvenile birds and adult males. In spring, however, migration differed mainly by sex rather than by age. In particular, males passed over earlier than females, likely due to the pressure on males to earlier arrival at their breeding areas. A simulation …

A morphometric study on sural nerves in metachromatic leucodystrophy.

1987

This study reexamines peripheral neuropathy in infantile, juvenile and adult metachromatic leuco-dystrophy. A computer-assisted method was used which gives more detailed information on abnormal fibre structure from scatter diagrams of the g ratio (axon diameter/fibre diameter). The data show marked and statistically significant reductions in sheath thickness, particularly for the thick myelinated fibres, and most severe in the juvenile and adult forms. This is interpreted as evidence of remodelling of virtually the entire fibre population, without a clear-cut selectivity for either thin or thick fibres.

Disparities in the prevalence of clinical features between systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and adult-onset Still's disease

2022

Abstract Objective To compare clinical features and treatments of patients with systemic JIA (sIJA) and adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD). Methods The clinical charts of consecutive patients with sJIA by International League of Association of Rheumatology criteria or AOSD by Yamaguchi criteria were reviewed. Patients were seen at a large paediatric rheumatology referral centre or at 10 adult rheumatology academic centres. Data collected included clinical manifestations, inflammation biomarkers, systemic score, macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), parenchymal lung disease, disease course, disability, death and medications administered. Results A total of 166 patients (median age at diagnos…

Life success of males on nonoffender, adolescence-limited, persistent, and adult-onset antisocial pathways: follow-up from age 8 to 42

2009

A random sample of 196 males, drawn from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development, was divided into four groups of offenders using information from government registers of convictions between ages 21 and 47, from local police registers searched at age 21, from a Self-Report Delinquency Scale administered at age 36, from a Life History Calendar for ages 15-42, and from personal interviews at ages 27, 36, and 42. The groups were: persistent offenders (offences before and after age 21; 29% of the men); adolescence-limited offenders (offences before age 21; 27%); adult-onset offenders (offences after age 21; 16%); and nonoffenders (28%). The profile of the persiste…

Childhood Family Problems and Current Psychiatric Problems among Young Violent and Property Offenders

1996

The main objective was to examine whether young property and violent offenders would differ from each other in the prevalence of childhood abuse and neglect experiences, prevalence of various early family problems, and prevalence of disruptive behavior disorders, depression, and substance use.Childhood abuse and neglect assessments and family problems were based on interview, questionnaire, and file data. Psychiatric diagnoses were made on the basis of a structured clinical interview. There were no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of childhood physical or psychological abuse, or neglect between the groups. According to the files, physical abuse was experienced by 57.5%…

Migraine headaches in adolescents: a five-year follow-up study

2002

Background and Objectives.—Longitudinal studies of juvenile migraine are very few. We investigated the prevalence and evolution over 5 years of migraine without aura (MWOA) and migraineous disorder (MD) in an adolescent population. Methods.—Sixty-four subjects (34 girls and 30 boys, mean age 17.3±1.1 years) out of 80 selected in our 1989 epidemiological survey were included in the study. The diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society were used in both studies. Results.—Thirty-two of 64 subjects (50%) had MWAO, 18 (28.1%) had MD, and 14 (21.9%) had headache not classifiable (HnC). Our results show that MWOA persisted in 56.2%, converted to MD or HnC in 9.4% and 3.1% of cases, …
