Ranking and comparing key factors causing time-overruns in on-site construction

2022

For years, the construction industry has looked for ways to avoid time-overruns in construction. Despite previous research mapping the factors affecting time performance, site-managers have difficulties in reducing the time-overrun. In order to create a clearer guidance on how to control time-performance, this study investigates the resource related factors because they are within the site-manager’s control. Three Case studies were followed and a survey including 36 participants where conducted. Both investigated and ranked the likelihood of delay due to the seven different resource factors. The ranking of the resource factors was identified as: (1) Construction design, (2) Connecting works…

Estimation of the presence of unmetabolized dialkyl phthalates in untreated human urine by an on-line miniaturized reliable method

2015

Abstract At present, human exposure to dialkyl phthalates is assessed through urinary measurement of their metabolites due mainly to contamination in their analysis by their ubiquitous presence. An on-line miniaturized method and the processing of the untreated urine samples have been the key factors for minimizing contamination and achieving unbiased results. Di(2-ethylhexyl) (DEHP), diethyl (DEP), dibutyl (DBP) and mono-ethylhexyl (MEHP) phthalates in urine samples have been included in the study; MEHP as metabolite of the main dialkyl phthalate such as DEHP. On-line in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME)-capillary liquid chromatography (CapLC) with diode array detection (DAD) is e…

In situ delivery of corticosteroids for treatment of oral diseases.

2017

In many mucocutaneous disorders, corticosteroids therapy is currently central. Systemic therapy is restricted to severe disorders whereas topical applications are considered as the first-line treatment. The oral cavity environment, the medication form and other factors related to the delivery method are key factors for the therapy efficiency and effectiveness. Current marketed medications are not able to avoid wrong drug exposure and scarce patients’ compliance. Innovative in situ delivery systems are able to prolong the drug retention time on the mucosa and to avoid the drawbacks of conventional formulations. This review is intended to give a general overview of oral mucocutaneous patholo…

Corporate e-Governance Disclosure in the Digital Age: An Empirical Study of Spanish Listed Companies

2005

Corporate governance research has focused mainly on the analysis of the information that firms ought to disclose and the effects of disclosure, basically without considering the media involved. This paper examines the relevance of technology, and particularly the internet, for the improvement of corporate governance and transparency in listed companies. The need for this study is clear in view of the increasing interest shown by supervisory authorities for the oversight of the European and US capital markets in regulating not only content but also the manner in which corporate governance information is disclosed over the internet. In this paper we have quantified three corporate governance …

Climate Change Education in the Curricula of Technical and Classical Universities

2010

Climate change education is becoming an integral part of the education in study programs at universities in Latvia offering environmental education study programs. In this article, a comparison of approaches of climate change education in classical (University of Latvia) and technical (Riga Technical University) are discussed. Requirements of the labour market are the key factors influencing study content and study methods. Therefore, consultations with major stakeholders and with academics involved in environmental education (e.g. the Council of Environmental Education and Science), may be some of the main tools to implement new concepts.

Collaborative innovation: the decade that radically changed drilling performance

2012

This article sheds light on key factors associated with innovations that are mainly based on experiential learning. The history of a company engaged in the offshore oil and gas industry exemplifies the points: Hitec started out as a small company with limited financial resources, but over a 10-year period, its innovations and improvements radically transformed offshore oil and gas drilling operations. An evolutionary methodological approach is balanced by theoretically informed analysis. A main finding is that customer–supplier interaction was crucial. Hitec's success, crowned by its eventual acquisition by American capital, can be attributed in part to the know-how and technology provided …

Alimentación y salud en la Valencia medieval. Teorías y prácticas

2013

The aim of this article is to provide an initial survey about the relationship between food habits and health in a Mediterranean city during the Late Middle Ages, by comparing medical treatises, gastronomic recipes and the archival sources that tell us about the actual expenses in food. Through this comparison, and by using accounting records of aristocratic houses, merchant enterprises, convents and hospitals, we can observe the dietary guidelines that were applied, and their concordance with the galenic principles of University medicine. Moreover, we attempt to assess what were the key factors in the evolution of these theories’ guidelines, and how they were probably rather a way to appro…

Micropollutants throughout an integrated urban drainage model: Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis

2017

Abstract The paper presents the sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of an integrated urban drainage model which includes micropollutants. Specifically, a bespoke integrated model developed in previous studies has been modified in order to include the micropollutant assessment (namely, sulfamethoxazole – SMX). The model takes into account also the interactions between the three components of the system: sewer system (SS), wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and receiving water body (RWB). The analysis has been applied to an experimental catchment nearby Palermo (Italy): the Nocella catchment. Overall, five scenarios, each characterized by different uncertainty combinations of sub-systems (i.e…

Company in a Global Environment and Intangible Assets

2017

The article discusses the nature and material scope of intangible assets. The author presented that these are key factors in the process of doing business in the global market. The paper also presents possibilities of their identification in the accounting system. To solve the presented problem, the author used methods of analysis of literature, content of legal regulations, and a method of comparison and inference.
