Crystallization Behaviour at High Cooling Rates of Two Polypropylenes

1993

Phase distribution of quenched samples of two isotactic polypropylenes, having different molecular weight distributions, was evaluated by a deconvolution procedure of WAXD spectra. The dependence on cooling rate of the two resins shows the low molecular weights rich polymer is characterized by a faster kinetics with an α-monoclinic to mesomorphic transition taking place at higher cooling rates.

Multi-scale simulations of polymeric nanoparticle aggregation during rapid solvent exchange.

2018

Using a multi-scale approach which combines both molecular dynamics (MD) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations, we study a simple and scalable method for fabricating charge-stabilized nanoparticles through a rapid solvent exchange, i.e., Flash NanoPrecipitation (FNP). This multi-scale approach is based on microscopic information from MD simulations and uses a KMC algorithm to access macroscopic length- and time scales, which allows direct comparison with experiments and quantitative predictions. We find good agreement of our simulation results with the experiments. In addition, the model allows us to understand the aggregation mechanism on both microscopic and macroscopic levels and det…

Hyperbranched-linear-hyperbranched ABA-type block copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and polyglycerol

2009

BACKGROUND: Until recently, hyperbranched polymers were thought to be ill-defined materials that were not useful as building blocks for well-defined complex polymer architectures. It is a current challenge to develop strategies that offer rapid access to well-defined hyperbranched block copolymers. RESULTS: A convenient three-step protocol for the synthesis of double-hydrophilic hyperbranched–linear–hyperbranched ABA-type triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) is presented. The Bola-type polymers exhibiting an aliphatic polyether structure were prepared from a linear (lin) linPG-b-PEO-b-linPG precursor triblock. The materials exhibit lo…

Crystallization kinetics in relation to polymer processing

1993

Phase distribution of quenched samples has been determined by a deconvolution procedure of WAXS spectra in a wide range of cooling rates. The informations collected together with isothermal and DSC results provide a very wide set of data on the crystallization kinetics of polymers relevant which covers conditions encountered in most polymer processing operations. They have been compared with predictions of a non-isothermal crystallization model assuming two independent and parallel crystallization processes competing during solidification.

Pressure-induced formation of diblock copolymer "micelles" in supercritical fluids. A combined study by small angle scattering experiments and mean-f…

2004

We developed a simple time-dependent mean-field theory to describe the phase separation kinetics of either homopolymers or AB-diblock copolymers in supercritical (SC) fluids. The model, previously used to describe the phase behavior of AB-block copolymers under the assumption of strong solvent selectivity for just one copolymer chain, has been extended to study the kinetics of the phase separation process. Time resolved small angle x-ray scattering (TR-SAXS) measurements have been performed on different AB-diblock copolymers containing a perfluorinated chain and dissolved in SC-CO2. The data obtained over a wide range of pressure and temperature confirm our theoretical predictions. Particul…

Confinement-induced screening of hydrodynamic interactions and spinodal decomposition: Multiscale simulations of colloid-polymer mixtures

2012

Phase separation kinetics of a colloid-polymer mixture confined between two planar repulsive walls is studied by a multiscale simulation approach. Colloids and polymers are described by particles interacting with continuous potentials suitable for molecular-dynamics simulation, while hydrodynamic interactions mediated by solvent particles are accounted for by the multiparticle collision dynamics method. Varying the distance D between the walls and the character of the boundary conditions, the interplay of structure formation parallel and perpendicular to the walls is studied, and the effect of hydrodynamics on the growth of domain size ld(t) with time t is elucidated. Only for slip boundary…

Unusual crystallization kinetics in a hard sphere colloid-polymer mixture.

2008

We investigated the crystallization kinetics of a hard sphere colloid-polymer mixture at conditions where about 95% of solid coexists with about 5% of fluid. From time resolved Bragg and small angle light scattering, we find that the crystallite size increases with a power law of exponent alpha approximately 1/3 during both the conversion and the coarsening stage. This observation points to a single conserved order parameter for both stages and cannot be explained if the mixture is regarded as an effective one-component system. We alternatively suggest that--based on local geometric demixing--the polymer density takes the role of the conserved order parameter.

Crystal structure of the bifunctional soybean Bowman-Birk inhibitor at 0.28-nm resolution. Structural peculiarities in a folded protein conformation.

1996

The Bowman-Birk inhibitor from soybean is a small protein that contains a binary arrangement of trypsin-reactive and chymotrypsin-reactive subdomains. In this report, the crystal structure of this anticarcinogenic protein has been determined to 0.28-nm resolution by molecular replacement from crystals grown at neutral pH. The crystal structure differs from a previously determined NMR structure [Werner, M. H. & Wemmer, D. E. (1992) Biochemistry 31, 999-1010] in the relative orientation of the two enzyme-insertion loops, in some details of the main chain trace, in the presence of favourable contacts in the trypsin-insertion loop, and in the orientation of several amino acid side chains. The p…

Dominance of Chain Entanglement over Transient Sticking on Chain Dynamics in Hydrogen-Bonded Supramolecular Polymer Networks in the Melt

2018

The chain dynamics in supramolecular polymer networks is determined by the interplay of the kinetics of transient interchain association and relaxation of the network chains themselves. This interplay can be addressed by studying model supramolecular polymer networks in which the number of associative side groups and the molar mass of the covalently jointed backbone polymers are both varied systematically. To realize this idea, we use precursor chains with three different molar masses, which comes along with different extents of entanglement in the melt state. For each molar mass, the precursor polymers are functionalized with three different relative contents of associative side groups, gi…
