Electrodeposition methods in superheavy element chemistry

To prepare electrodeposition experiments with superheavy elements (SHE), their homologs were investigated. In the experiments, various electrode materials and electrolytes were used. Critical potentials (E crit ) where the electrodeposition starts and potentials for the deposition of 50% of the atoms in solution (E 50% ) were determined. Underpotential deposition was observed in most cases. An electrolytic cell for a fast electrochemical deposition was developed and the time for the deposition of 50% of the atoms in solution (t 50% ) was determined. Abstract During processing, storage and consumption, mass transfer of various molecules (water, gases, flavour compounds or other solutes) occur between the different phases in complex food products, and/or also between the complex food and its surroundings. These mass transfers can lead to physical and/or chemical changes and thus induce food quality modifications. The objective of this presentation is to better understand the behaviour of small molecules at the interfaces, especially in model heterogeneous food systems. Convective mass transfer to partially recessed and porous electrodes

Abstract The diffusional problem of a rotating porous electrode has been analysed based on the mass transfer equations for a partially blocked electrode. It is shown that the porous geometry leads to a dependence of the current on rotation rate identical to that corresponding to a coupled diffusion-activated electron transfer mechanism. The apparent rate constant, however, is related only to the geometry of the porous surface. It is shown that the characteristic diffusional length corresponds to the pore dimension modified by a term including the transition from linear to spherical diffusional geometry at the pore entrance. Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Nonfunctionalized Olefins in Propylene Carbonate—Kinetic or Thermodynamic Control?

Iridium-catalyzed hydrogenations of nonfunctionalized olefins in propylene carbonate as the solvent allow efficient catalysis with much higher enantioselectivities in comparison with dichloromethane which is usually employed for these reactions. Experimental and computational studies of the hydrogenation of 1-methylene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene have been performed to understand the limitation for this reaction.
A kinetic interpretation of a negative time constant in impedance equivalent circuits for the dissolution/passive transition

Abstract A theoretical impedance function is proposed for the active/passive transition of nickel in an acid sulphate medium. It is considered that passivating species progressively covers the electrode surface. This approximated model predicts the appearance of negative time constants in the impedance spectra when coverage coefficient θ values for passive species are greater than 0.5.
Porous materials as delivery and protective agents for Vitamin A

The suitability of porous materials to immobilize and release under control bioactive molecules prompted us to design and study delivery systems of Vitamin A (VitA). This molecule, relevant in several physiological functions, is easily oxidized. Commercial VitA was immobilized in two different clays, montmorillonite K-10 (MMT) and sepiolite (SEP), and in MCM-41, by impregnation. Characterization of the resulting hybrid materials by XRD, FTIR and 13C and 29Si (MAS) NMR spectroscopies revealed its presence. The photo-stability tests showed decreased degradation of VitA in the clays, compared to MCM-41 and the pure VitA, while thermostability is observed until ∼100 °C. The kinetics of the rele…

Choline is product and precursor to both acetylcholine and membrane phospholipids, and, in the brain, is ultimately provided by the circulation. The brain is protected from excess choline and choline deprivation by a refined system of homeostatic mechanisms that maintain a level of extracellular choline that, for its role as precursor, meets saturation criteria under normal conditions. The kinetic and activity profiles of choline are typical for a biosynthetic precursor.
The equilibrium structure of trans-glyoxal from experimental rotational constants and calculated vibration–rotation interaction constants

A total of six high-resolution FT-IR spectra for trans-glyoxal-d2, trans-glyoxal-d1 and trans-glyoxal-13C2 were recorded with a resolution ranging from 0.003 to 0.004 cm−1. By means of a simultaneous ground state combination difference analysis for each of these isotopologues using the Watson Hamiltonian in A-reduction and Ir-representation the ground state rotational constants are obtained. An empirical equilibrium structure is determined for trans-glyoxal using these experimental ground state rotational constants and vibration–rotation interaction constants calculated at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level of theory. The uptake and release kinetics of134Cs by Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and137Cs by Zebra Fish (Brachydanio rerio) from aquatic media of different ionic compositions and temperature was studied in controlled laboratory conditions. The accumulation of radiocesium in the case ofBrachydanio rerio is observed to be strongly dependent on the potassium ion concentration of the aquatic medium, but in the case ofCarassius auratus this dependence is quite weak. The biological half-lives of the cesium isotopes incorporated into the fish investigated in the present work vary from 19 to 80 days and are influenced by the temperature and the ionic composition of the aquatic medium.
