Knee extensor and flexor dominant gait patterns increase the knee frontal plane moment during walking

2013

High gait-induced knee frontal plane moment is linked with the development of knee osteoarthritis. Gait patterns across the normal population exhibit large inter-individual variabilities especially at the knee sagittal plane moment profile during loading response and terminal stance phase. However, the effects of different gait patterns on this moment remain unknown. Therefore, we examined whether different gait patterns are associated with atypically high knee frontal plane moments. Profiles of knee joint moments divided a sample of 24 subjects into three subgroups (11, 7, 6) through cluster analysis. Kinetics, kinematics, and spatio-temporal parameters were compared among clusters. Subjec…

Vibroarthrography measures joint sounds caused by sliding of the joint surfaces over each other. and can be affected by joint health, load and type of movement. Since both warm-up and muscle fatigue lead to local changes in the knee joint (e.g., temperature increase, lubrication of the joint, muscle activation), these may impact knee joint sounds. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of warm-up and muscle fatiguing exercise on knee joint sounds during an activity of daily living. Seventeen healthy, physically active volunteers (25.7 ± 2 years, 7 males) performed a control and an intervention session with a wash-out phase of one week. The control session consisted of sitting on a c…

Correlative histologic and arthroscopic evaluation in rheumatoid knee joints.

1992

The correlation between arthroscopic observations and histologic changes in rheumatoid arthritis is still controversial. Synovial samples of 21 knee joints in rheumatoid arthritis patients were comparatively investigated by endoscopy and histology. Biopsies were scored by an endoscopist and subsequently dissected. Different histochemical and immunocytochemical staining techniques were used to define inflammatory activity. Arthroscopic and histological values were compared by rating scales and variance analysis. Our study indicates that synovial biopsy is of diagnostic value in rheumatoid arthritis. However, its usefulness depends on the histochemical methods used. The results revealed highl…

Spinal and supraspinal mechanisms affecting torque development at different joint angles

2015

INTRODUCTION We examined the neural mechanisms responsible for plantar flexion torque changes at different joint positions. METHODS Nine subjects performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) at 6 ankle-knee angle combinations [3 ankle angles (dorsiflexion, anatomic position, plantar flexion) and 2 knee angles (flexion, full extension)]. Neural mechanisms were determined by V-wave, H-reflex (at rest and during MVC), and electromyography during MVC (RMS), normalized to the muscle compound action potential (V/Msup, Hmax/Mmax, Hsup Msup and RMS/Msup) and voluntary activation (VA), while muscle function was assessed by doublet amplitude. RESULTS MVC and doublet amplitude were significantly low…

Funktionsangiographie der kniegelenknahen Arterien: Konsequenzen für die Stentimplantation?

1990

Angiographic studies of the arteries adjoining the knee in 25 patients show extensive kinking and stenoses of the popliteal artery and less frequently of the distal femoral artery during flexion of the knee joint. This is due to the loss of elasticity with increasing age forcing the vessel into a tortuous course during shortening of the pathway of the popliteal artery with knee flexion. Independent of the principle of the different stents available they probably will not increase the contractility of the stented vessel in the longitudinal axis. It is to expect that after implantation of stents into the popliteal artery kinking will occur predominantly in the original segments of the vessel …

The effect of cement fixation on initial micromotion of the femoral component in condylar knee replacement

1992

Four fresh, cadaveric specimens were fitted with total knee replacements and mounted on a knee joint loading and measuring rig. Femoral component micromotion in the sagittal plane was measured with a transducer during flexion and extension of the specimen. Various condylar designs were used without and with cement. Movement followed a characteristic curve pattern and was less with cement fixation particularly for bone of low trabecular strength as determined by bone sample tests for stiffness. Cement fixation appears to be superior to cementless fixation.

Clinical assessment and comparison of ACL reconstruction using synthetic graft (Neoligaments versus FiberTape).

2021

Background Due to the low potential for primary biological healing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the most popular approach is currently reconstruction using a graft. Recent research indicates that the technique of strengthening a damaged ligament with synthetic tapes (internal bracing) may be an alternative to reconstructive treatment, especially in cases of partial ACL damage. Objectives To compare and evaluate the possibility of using a synthetic graft (Neoligaments or FiberTape) to treat partial lesions of the ACL. Material and methods This was a retrospective cohort study. Selected from a pool of 128 patients undergoing primary unilateral intra-articular ACL reconstruction du…
