Consensus guidelines for the detection of immunogenic cell death

2014

Apoptotic cells have long been considered as intrinsically tolerogenic or unable to elicit immune responses specific for dead cell-associated antigens. However, multiple stimuli can trigger a functionally peculiar type of apoptotic demise that does not go unnoticed by the adaptive arm of the immune system, which we named "immunogenic cell death" (ICD). ICD is preceded or accompanied by the emission of a series of immunostimulatory damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in a precise spatiotemporal configuration. Several anticancer agents that have been successfully employed in the clinic for decades, including various chemotherapeutics and radiotherapy, can elicit ICD. Moreover, defect…

A First-Principles Study of the Ag/a-Al2O3(0001) Interface

2001

Ab initio simulations of the Ag/a-Al2O3(0001) interface have been performed for periodic slab models. We have considered Al- and O-terminated corundum surfaces, low and high substrate coverages by silver, as well as the two preferred Ag adsorption sites. The two different terminations give rise to qualitatively different results: silver physisorption on the Al-terminated substrate and chemisorption on O-terminated one. The latter could be treated as a possible model for the defective Al-terminated substrate, where the outermost aluminium ions are removed (completely or partly). This makes O-terminated surface highly reactive towards a deposited metal, in order to restore initial corundum st…

Zn,Al hydrotalcites calcined at different temperatures: Preparation, characterization and photocatalytic activity in gas–solid regime

2011

Abstract Layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing zinc and aluminium within the brucite-like layers and carbonate as the interlayer anion have been used as precursors for the preparation of mixed metal oxides by calcination. Zinc oxide and the ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel were formed with different degree of crystallinity depending of two parameters, i.e., the Zn 2+ /Al 3+ molar ratio and the calcination temperature (500–800 °C) of the LDH precursor. A pure spinel phase was obtained to remove ZnO upon a basic post-treatment in NaOH solution of the samples calcined at 800 °C. All the samples were tested for the photodegradation of 2-propanol in gas–solid regime. All the samples resulted active as het…

Blocking Activin Receptor Ligands Is Not Sufficient to Rescue Cancer-Associated Gut Microbiota—A Role for Gut Microbial Flagellin in Colorectal Cance…

2019

Colorectal cancer (CRC) and cachexia are associated with the gut microbiota and microbial surface molecules. We characterized the CRC-associated microbiota and investigated whether cachexia affects the microbiota composition. Further, we examined the possible relationship between the microbial surface molecule flagellin and CRC. CRC cells (C26) were inoculated into mice. Activin receptor (ACVR) ligands were blocked, either before tumor formation or before and after, to increase muscle mass and prevent muscle loss. The effects of flagellin on C26-cells were studied in vitro. The occurrence of similar phenomena were studied in murine and human tumors. Cancer modulated the gut microbiota witho…

AUTOPHAGY, BUT NOT THE UNFOLDED PROTEIN RESPONSE, REGULATES THE EXPRESSION OF IL-23 IN THEGUT OF PATIENTS WITH ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS AND SUBCLINICAL…

2013

Background: IL-23 is a heterodimeric cytokine that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). High serum and tissue levels for this cytokine have been demonstrated in AS and correlated with entheseal inflammation but the mechanisms responsible for its over-expression are currently not clear. Objectives: The aim of the study was to clarify the immunological mechanisms underlying the increased IL-23 expression in the gut of AS patients. Methods: Consecutive gut biopsies from 20 HLA-B27+ AS patients and 10 normal subjects were considered for the present study. The occurrence of HLA-B27 misfolding was studied by assessing the co-localization of HLA-B heavy chains (H…

Experimental Textual-learning Activities for an L2 Italian Initial-literacy Classroom

2019

The paper describes some specific textual learning activities developed for an L2 Italian initial literacy classroom and, in particular, for illiterate multilinguals (mostly unaccompanied foreign minors). The activities belong to an experimental proposal. It consists of a specific textual teaching module integrated with a second-language initial literacy course. The aim was to get the learner immediately accustomed to some types of text, that have been chosen to be suitable for his profile and his needs, as well as perfectly integrated with the contexts and vocabulary proposed in the classroom. Because of the minimum level, the texts were mostly discontinuous. Based on the importance of lea…

Dissection of human papillomavirus type 33 L2 domains involved in nuclear domains (ND) 10 homing and reorganization

2003

Abstract We have recently shown that the minor capsid protein L2 of human papillomavirus type 33 (HPV33) recruits the transcriptional repressor Daxx into nuclear domains (ND) 10 and causes the loss of the transcriptional activator Sp100 from these subnuclear structures (Florin et al., 2002b) . In order to dissect L2 domains involved in nuclear translocation, ND10 homing, loss of Sp100, and recruitment of Daxx, a detailed deletion mutagenesis of L2 was performed. Using immunofluorescence and green fluorescent protein fusions, we have identified two nuclear localization signals (NLS) in the central and C-terminal part of L2, respectively, homologous to previously identified NLS in HPV6B L2 (S…
