Plasma-corticosteroids (PCS), free fatty acids (FFA), insulin and glucose were determined continously in maternal blood during the entire course of delivery, from the first stage of labour until 6 hours after delivery. Flow Cytometric Analysis of Calcium Mobilization in Whole‐Blood Platelets

Flow cytometry provides a convenient method to evaluate platelet activation by following the kinetics of intracellular free Ca2+, using sensitive fluorescent indicators that can be loaded into intact cells. Moreover, in the clinical setting, whole-blood techniques have obvious advantages to avoid artifactual platelet activation and allow the maintenance of near-physiological conditions. This unit describes a fast and sensitive flow cytometric procedure using the Ca2+-sensitive dye fluo-3 AM and the platelet-specific antibody CD41-PE to determine the kinetics of intracellular Ca2+ mobilization in whole-blood platelets with minimal manipulation of the samples. Enhancement of immunohistochemical staining

The present paper describes two simple procedures which enhance immunohistochemical staining. One is to cover the sections with a plastic film to keep the serum uniformly distributed and minimize its evaporation. Secondly, rocking of the slides has been introduced, causing the serum to flow back and forth under the plastic film. Using this system, it has been possible to test for the effect of mixing on an immunohistochemical reaction (the demonstration of calcitonin in thyroid C cells). It has been found that mixing definitely enhances the reaction during the first 8 h. No effect of serum volume was observed.

Limonium cedrorumsp. nov. (Plumbaginaceae) from Lebanon

Limonium cedrorum Domina & Ramondo, a new species belonging to the L. palmare aggr., is described and illustrated from the inland near Becharre (Lebanon). Its relationships with morphologically close taxa are discussed. Limonium cedrorum differs from L. sieberi and L. postii mainly by looser inflorescences and larger flowers. It differs from L. galilaeum by longer outer bract and longer scale below the first inflorescence branch, few sterile branches, thicker base of the inflorescence and denser spikes, and from L. graecum by the shape of the infl orescence, longer basal internodes and the shape of the calyx.

Caspase-dependent cell death involved in brain damage after acute subdural hematoma in rats

Abstract Traumatic brain injury is associated with acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) that worsens outcome. Although early removal of blood can reduce mortality, patients still die or remain disabled after surgery and additional treatments are needed. The blood mass and extravasated blood induce pathomechanisms such as high intracranial pressure (ICP), ischemia, apoptosis and inflammation which lead to acute as well as delayed cell death. Extropy: Complementary Dual of Entropy

This article provides a completion to theories of information based on entropy, resolving a longstanding question in its axiomatization as proposed by Shannon and pursued by Jaynes. We show that Shannon's entropy function has a complementary dual function which we call "extropy." The entropy and the extropy of a binary distribution are identical. However, the measure bifurcates into a pair of distinct measures for any quantity that is not merely an event indicator. As with entropy, the maximum extropy distribution is also the uniform distribution, and both measures are invariant with respect to permutations of their mass functions. Determination of particle number and brightness using a laser scanning confocal microscope operating in the analog mode

We describe a method to obtain the brightness and number of molecules at each pixel of an image stack obtained with a laser scanning microscope. The method is based on intensity fluctuations due to the diffusion of molecules in a pixel. For a detector operating in the analog mode, the variance must be proportional to the intensity. Once this constant has been calibrated, we use the ratio between the variance and the intensity to derive the particle brightness. Then, from the ratio of the intensity to the brightness we obtain the average number of particles in the pixel. Fracture mechanics of snow avalanches.

Dense snow avalanches are analyzed by modeling the snow slab as an elastic and brittle plate, attached by static friction to the underlying ground. The grade of heterogeneity in the local fracture (slip) thresholds, and the ratio of the average substrate slip threshold to the average slab fracture threshold, are the decisive parameters for avalanche dynamics. For a strong pack of snow there appears a stable precursor of local slips when the frictional contacts are weakened (equivalent to rising temperature), which eventually trigger a catastrophic crack growth that suddenly releases the entire slab.
