Does the addition of caseinophosphopeptides or milk improve zinc in vitro bioavailability in fruit beverages?

2009

Abstract The influence of caseinophosphopeptides (CPPs) added to fruit beverage versus milk based fruit beverage upon zinc retention, transport, and uptake, as well as the influence of Fe supplementation, were studied using a combined simulated gastrointestinal digestion/Caco-2 cell system. Zinc retention, transport, and uptake of milk based fruit beverage was 4- to 5-fold greater than that of fruit beverages with or without CPPs – no statistically significant differences being observed in relation to the presence or absence of CPPs. Possibly, a slow release of CPPs throughout the digestive tract, as can be expected to take place during the digestion of casein, has a more beneficial effect …

Availability of polyphenols in fruit beverages subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and their effects on proliferation, cell-cycle and ap…

2009

Abstract Three fruit beverages: Fb (grape–orange–apricot), FbFe (Fb + iron sulphate) and FbFeM (FbFe + skimmed milk) were subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Addition of Fe and milk decreased the phenolic content of Fb by 13% and 55%, respectively. The digestion process decreased the phenolic content by 47%, 60%, and 70% in Fb, FbFe and FbFeM with respect to the initial, non-digested, Fb. Caco-2 cells were incubated for 4 h daily for four days or continuously for 24 h with bioaccessible fractions obtained after the digestion (digests). Polyphenols were not metabolised by Caco-2 cells. Fb digest (∼50 μM total phenolics) was the sample that led to the highest inhibition of cell …

Precise Indication of Air Pollution Sources

2002

The present paper is a report of an application of Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis and PIXE in the characterization of the particulate matter in atmospheric aerosols in Vitoria Metropolitan Region (VMR), Brazil. The main sources of particulate matter, natural, industrial and antropogenic (from human activities), have been studied to identify its contribution in the atmospheric particles. Through the years 1995 to 1999 samples of total suspended particles (TSP, O ⩽; 100 μm) were collected from six points within VMR and in two points the inhalable particles (PM10, O ⩽ 10 μm). In addition, a receptor modeling was used helping in a precise indication of …

First principles slab calculations of the regular Cu/MgO(001) interface

2004

Ab initio slab calculations are performed for the copper adhesion over magnesium ions on the perfect MgO(0 0 1) surface with 1/4 monolayer (ML), two types of 1/2 ML and 1 ML substrate coverages. Results of our calculations are compared with various experimental and theoretical data. Both small atomic polarization and charge redistribution give the dominant contributions to the physisorption bonding on a regular Cu/MgO(0 0 1) interface.

Kinetics and equilibrium in insulin radioimmunoassay.

2002

The kinetics of insulin reaction has been studied with its specific antibody immobilized on the inner wall of the reaction tube; the radioimmunoanalytical determination of such a substance is based on the reaction. Independent variables were labelled and unlabelled insulin concentrations, temperature, viscosity, and the medium's ionic strength. Biexponential kinetics was found to be dependent on the concentrations fitted to the models discussed in the paper. The effect of temperature shows activation parameters similar to the viscous flow energy of water, which suggests that the reaction is diffusion-controlled. The results of the viscosity analysis points at the clearly negative influence …

Dialyzability of iron, zinc, and copper of different types of infant formulas marketed in Spain

1998

The bioavailability of trace elements in infant formulas is affected by different physiological and dietetic factors. In vitro methods based on element dialyzability have been proposed to estimate the bioavailability. Infant formulas of the same type but from different manufacturers can differ in the salt used for supplementation and in the contents of other components that can affect mineral bioavailability. The aim of our study is to estimate the dialyzability of iron, zinc, and copper of formulas marketed in Spain, in order to detect possible differences in formulas of the same type coming from different manufacturers. At the same time, the effects of the type of formula, the composition…

Site-Specific Information on Membrane Protein Folding by Electron Spin Echo Envelope Modulation Spectroscopy

2010

Compared to folding of soluble proteins, folding of membrane proteins is complicated by the fact that it requires an amphiphilic environment. Few existing techniques can provide structurally resolved information on folding kinetics. For the major plant light harvesting complex LHCII, it is demonstrated that changes in water accessibility of a particular amino acid residue can be followed during folding by measuring the hyperfine interaction of spin labels with deuterium nuclei of heavy water. The incorporation of residue 196 into the hydrophobic core of a detergent micelle was investigated. The technique provides a time constant that is similar to the one found with fluorescence spectroscop…
