1,3-Benzyl Migration in Iminium Ions: Evidence for a Fast Free-Radical Chain Reaction

The “exocyclic” 1,3-benzyl shift observed in iminium salts derived from 1-benzyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines is related to the “endocyclic” Knabe rearrangement. A crossover experiment, isotopic labelling, the study of initiators and inhibitors as well as DFT calculations of gas-phase model structures provide evidence for a free-radical pathway under kinetic entropy control that is not affected by “slow” radical traps.
Analyzing Large-Scale Crowd Simulations for Building Evacuation

Animated virtual crowds have been used last years for analyzing human factors in scenarios where masses of people gather. A typical example is building evacuation in case of fire. Scalability still remains as an open issue for these multiagent systems applications. In this paper, we use a scalable architecture to simulate a large-scale version of a virtual crowd in a building evacuation. From the social point of view, the results provided by the large-scale version of the crowd add new and crucial information about the agents behavior, emphasizing the need for a small amount of trained leaders in order to save lives. Abstract Background Complex perianal fistulas are a major challenge for modern surgery since 10–35% of patients have functional problems after treatment. Sphincter-saving techniques have a wide range of efficacy (10–80%).
