Ocena możliwości potencjalnej ekspansji prześwietlika dębowego Corythucha arcuata (Say, 1832), inwazyjnego gatunku z rodziny Tingidae (Hemiptera: Het…
2020
Corythucha arcuata, the North American oak lace bug feeding on leaves of “white oaks” in its native range, was discovered in Europe in 2000 (in northern Italy). Since that time it has spread rapidly in several European countries where its population outbreaks have been observed. However, the species was not reported from Poland, so far. In this study the potential geographic distribution of Corythucha arcuata was modelled using maximum entropy (Max-Ent) in order to predict the regions of Poland where it would have found the best environmental conditions for its further spread. The results showed that the highest habitat suitability areas were located in the central-eastern parts…
The Sick Adipose Tissue: New Insights Into Defective Signaling and Crosstalk With the Myocardium
2021
Adipose tissue (AT) biology is linked to cardiovascular health since obesity is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and positively correlated with excessive visceral fat accumulation. AT signaling to myocardial cells through soluble factors known as adipokines, cardiokines, branched-chain amino acids and small molecules like microRNAs, undoubtedly influence myocardial cells and AT function via the endocrine-paracrine mechanisms of action. Unfortunately, abnormal total and visceral adiposity can alter this harmonious signaling network, resulting in tissue hypoxia and monocyte/macrophage adipose infiltration occurring alongside expanded intra-abdominal and epicardial fat depots seen …
A common biological basis of obesity and nicotine addiction
2013
Contains fulltext : 128630.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Smoking influences body weight such that smokers weigh less than non-smokers and smoking cessation often leads to weight increase. The relationship between body weight and smoking is partly explained by the effect of nicotine on appetite and metabolism. However, the brain reward system is involved in the control of the intake of both food and tobacco. We evaluated the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affecting body mass index (BMI) on smoking behavior, and tested the 32 SNPs identified in a meta-analysis for association with two smoking phenotypes, smoking initiation (SI) and the number of cigarettes smoked …
Zbiorowiska roślinne z klasy Utricularietea intermedio-minoris w stawach hodowlanych południowo-zachodniej Polski
2017
Zbiorowiska z klasy Utricularietea intermedio-minoris Den Hartog et Segal 1964 em.
Effects of reduced pH on shell integrity of a common whelk from a natural undersea CO2 vent community off Vulcano Island, Italy.
2014
Hexaplex trunculus is a widespread Mediterranean gastropod mollusc that plays a crucial role in benthic ecosystem dynamics. Individuals occur in shallow, sublittoral habitats near Vulcano Island, Italy, where an undersea CO2 vent provides a gradient of seawater acidification mimicing future predicted levels of ocean acidification. Individuals were collected from three sites with declining pH [ambient ( pH 8.18), medium (pH 8.05) and low (pH 7.49)]. Dissolution of shells was clearly evident at the medium (smoothing of outer shell ) and low (pitting and holes) pH sites. Scanning electron microcroscopy will provide a qualitative comparative assessment of micro-scale impacts of shell dissolutio…

Unravelling Church Land : Transformations in the Relations between Church, State and Community in Uganda
2019
Christian churches control substantial areas of land in Africa. While intensifying struggles over their holdings are partly due to the increased pressure on land in general, they also reflect transformations in the relations through which churches’ claims to land are legitimized, the increased association of churches with business, and churches’ unique positioning as both institutions and communities. This article presents the trajectory of relations between church, state and community in Uganda from the missionary acquisition of land in the colonial era to the unravelling of church landholding under Museveni. Drawing on long‐term ethnographic fieldwork, the authors argue that claims to chu…
Residential mobility as a cause and consequence of vulnerability among the elderly in Reunion Island
2021
Experiencing and Encountering Impoverishment in Nineteenth-Century Finland
2017
Abstract The nineteenth century in Finland was characterized by significant societal changes. Since 1809 a Grand Duchy of imperial Russia, Finland began to transform from an early modern society of estates to a modern civic society. The end of the nineteenth century was characterized by significant economic growth. Despite this general development, for many people this era signaled impoverishment and downward mobility that affected even the next generations. A fresh look at the economic threats on various societal layers is called for. In this theme issue we are concerned with socially varying dimensions of destitution, its manifestations, and the ways in which it was experienced and repell…
