Perspectives of Comparative Anatomy of the Mammalian Pineal Gland

1983

As the precise role of the pineal gland has been established in a few mammalian species only, every effort should be made to elucidate the function of this potentially important neuroendocrine organ in as many species as possible. One way in which the morphologist can contribute to reach this goal is to carry out comparative studies. Comparative anatomical studies with respect to the pineal gland can be, and should be, carried out at different structural levels: (a) At the gross anatomical level; (b) at the tissue level; (c) at the cellular level, and (d) at the level of cell organelles.

Hypogonadotrophic Pituitary Insufficiency in Transfusional Hemochromatosis Complicating Thalassemia Major: MR Imaging

1999

To identify pituitary iron overload in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia major causing secondary hypogonadism, we prospectively evaluated signal intensity abnormalities of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland of 30 patients comparing spin-echo, gradient-echo imaging and pituitary T2 relaxation times measurement. We found that pituitary iron overload can best be assessed by MR imaging using gradient-echo T2*-weighted technique to establish signal reduction in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. This finding is correlated to increasing serum ferritin level — a parameter that reflects the severity of iron overload, and is more evident in patients with secondary hypogon…

A low-level spectrometer with a planar low-energy HPGe: shielding arrangement tests and system performance for 210Pb determination in air filter samp…

2001

A system for low-energy photon spectrometry using a planar germanium detector with appropriate specifications is presented. A spectrometric background investigation has been carried out with various detector shielding arrangements. The characteristics of the system for measurements of 210Pb in air-particulate matter on filters have been determined.

Influence of Content Knowledge on Pedagogical Content Knowledge: The case of teaching photosynthesis and plant growth

2009

International audience; Abstract The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of the amount and quality of content knowledge on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). The biological content photosynthesis and plant growth was used as an example. The research sample consisted of 10 primary and 10 secondary (biology) teacher students. Questionnaires, lesson preparation task and an interview were used to collect data. Primary student teachers' were not aware of students' conceptual difficulties and had problems in choosing the most important content. Neither of the groups had knowledge on suitable experiments and demonstrations, which indicates that PCK should be explicitly taught. The …

An integrative review of the enjoyment of sadness associated with music

2018

The recent surge of interest towards the paradoxical pleasure produced by sad music has generated a handful of theories and an array of empirical explorations on the topic. However, none of these have attempted to weigh the existing evidence in a systematic fashion. The present work puts forward an integrative framework laid out over three levels of explanation – biological, psycho-social, and cultural – to compare and integrate the existing findings in a meaningful way. First, we review the evidence pertinent to experiences of pleasure associated with sad music from the fields of neuroscience, psychophysiology, and endocrinology. Then, the psychological and interpersonal mechanisms underly…

Politiskās komunikācijas lomas analīze Eiropas Parlamenta vēlēšanās.

2016

2015

The technology transfer model offers us a perspective to analyze how schools receive incorporate technological activities and their equipment. Particularly, we analyze the innovations generated by these processes at the organizational level of schools as recipients of technology. The analyzed data belong to an investigation which is currently being performed in 12 regions on the “School 2.0 program”. At this stage we handle references of descriptive statistics and some of the interviews and classroom observations from the participating centers on the “smart school”. From the first analysis, it can be said that the school system follows a pattern transfer including: high dependence on the po…

Comparing the performance of autocracies: issues in measuring types of autocratic regimes and performance

2013

This paper discusses two methodological issues in research studying the performance of political regimes. First, it compares the conceptualisation and measurement of three data sets on types of autocratic regimes developed by Geddes et al. (2012a), Hadenius et al. (2012), and Cheibub et al. (2010). The data sets are found to differ with respect to their conceptualisation of autocratic regimes (narrow vs. flexible concepts) and types of autocratic regimes (criteria for classification, number of autocratic regime types and definition of the main types), as well as their levels of measurement (simple vs. complex indicators). As a result, the choice of data sets matters for this type of researc…

Sensitivity of low-level clouds and precipitation to anthropogenic aerosol emission in southern West Africa: a DACCIWA case study

2021

Abstract. During the West African summer monsoon, pollutants emitted in urbanized coastal areas modify cloud cover and precipitation patterns. The Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud-Interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA) field campaign provided numerous aircraft-based and ground-based observations, which are used here to evaluate two experiments made with the coupled WRF-CHIMERE model, integrating both the direct and indirect aerosol effect on meteorology. During one well-documented week (1–7 July 2016), the impacts of anthropogenic aerosols on the diurnal cycle of low-level clouds and precipitation are analyzed in detail using high and moderate intensity of anthropogenic emissions in the expe…
