Charge transfer in high-Tc(Y/Pr)Ba2Cu3O7superlattices

We comment on the charge-transfer model for the unique softening of the apex [O(4)] oxygen observed in Raman spectra of a- and c-oriented (${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{7}$${)}_{\mathit{m}}$(${\mathrm{PrBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{7}$${)}_{\mathit{n}}$ superlattices presented in a recent paper by Ham et al. [Phys. Rev. B 50, 16 598 (1994)]. We find the size of the charge transfer necessary for the observed shift too large to explain the observations. In addition, a conclusion about the unique behavior of both types of superlattices can only be drawn if the sample quality is properly considered. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

A gray-level 2D feature detector using circular statistics

Abstract This paper presents a new method for corner and circular feature detection in gray-level images. It is based on the application of standard statistical techniques to the distribution of gradient orientations in a circular neighborhood of the prospective feature point. An evaluation using standard procedures and a comparison with other approaches is presented. Results show the robustness of this method as compared to the other corner detectors analyzed. The main novelties are the possibility of detecting points that are centers of circular symmetries, and discriminating between junctions, which are classified into corners (two-edge junctions) and multiple edge junctions.

New descent rules for solving the linear semi-infinite programming problem

The algorithm described in this paper approaches the optimal solution of a continuous semi-infinite linear programming problem through a sequence of basic feasible solutions. The descent rules that we present for the improvement step are quite different when one deals with non-degenerate or degenerate extreme points. For the non-degenerate case we use a simplex-type approach, and for the other case a search direction scheme is applied. Some numerical examples illustrating the method are given.

The Multilevel Model in the Computer-Generated Appraisal: A Case in Palermo

The construction of a mass appraisal model requires the preliminary study of the real estate market, the sampling of sold properties, the development of a forecasting model and the verification of the appraisal results. They are generally computerised methods, that work with geo-referenced data. This experimental work has proceeded to build a mass appraisal model, collecting a data sample of sales of apartments in the city of Palermo, in the five years 2008–2012, using a multivariate statistical model (multilevel), testing the results and providing the operating applications in a scheme of online real estate valuations.

Dynamic Risk Taking with Bonus Schemes

This paper studies dynamic risk taking by a risk-averse manager who receives a bonus; the company may default on its contractual obligations (debt and fixed compensation). We show that risk taking is time independent, and is summarized by the so-called risk aversion of derived utility. We highlight the importance of dynamic aspects and provide a foundation for common qualitative discussions that are based on characteristics of bonus functions. The paper cautions that deferral of fixed compensation may increase risk taking. Finally, we motivate a new bonus scheme that incentivizes the manager to implement the socially optimal risk level.

The Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures Society, or the BICA Society, is a recently formed nonprofit organization. The purpose of the Society is to promote and facilitate the transdisciplinary study of biologically inspired cognitive architectures (BICA), in particular, aiming at the emergence of a unifying, generally accepted framework for the design, characterization and implementation of human-level cognitive architectures. The First International Conference on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures (BICA 2010) is at the same time officially the First Annual Meeting of the BICA Society.

Walsham (2000) urged Information Systems researchers to truly cover all levels of analysis from the individual to the societal in their research agenda. Vibration effect on ball score test in international vs. national level table tennis

In table tennis, motor skills are crucial for discriminating player level. However, there is a dearth of studies exploring the impact of a vibrational stimulus on performance. Thirty-four male players (age 25 +/- 2 years ; body mass index, BMI 23.4 +/- 1.2 kg.m(-2)) participated in the study. Seventeen played at international level (IL), while the remaining 17 played at national level (NL). The participants underwent a ball-handling test, the ball score, before (PRE) and after (POST) a vibrational stimulus. Kindergarten teachers adjust their teaching practices in accordance with children's academic pre-skills

This study examined the extent to which kindergarten children’s academic pre‐skills are associated with their teachers’ subsequent teaching practices. The pre‐skills in reading and math of 1268 children (655 boys, 613 girls) were measured in kindergarten in the fall. A pair of trained observers used the Classroom Assessment Scoring System instrument to observe 49 kindergarten teachers on their emotional support, classroom organisation and instructional support in kindergarten in the spring.
