Immunoassays for trifloxystrobin analysis. Part II. Assay development and application to residue determination in food.
2014
Immunochemical assays constitute complementary analytical methods for small organic molecule determination. We herein describe the characterisation and optimisation of two competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in different formats using monoclonal antibodies to the Quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide trifloxystrobin. Antibody selectivity was evaluated using a variety of agrochemicals and the main trifloxystrobin metabolite. Acceptable tolerance of the immunoassay to methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile was observed in all cases, whereas a dissimilar influence of buffer pH and ionic strength was found. Moreover, the influence of Tween 20 over the analytical parameters was studi…
Initial viral load and decay kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 in the upper respiratory tract of adults and children
2021
We read with interest the systematic review published by Walsh et al. in the Journal of Infection,1 focusing on the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 RNA at the upper respiratory tract (URT). In this context, a novel SARS-CoV-2 variant lineage (B.1.1.7), first detected in the UK at the end of 2020 has transmission advantage over other lineages.2 Increased transmissibility of the B.1.1.7 variant has been linked to enhanced ACE2 affinity3 allegedly resulting in higher viral loads in URT, an observation that has been reported in some,3, 4, 5, 6 but not all7 large series published to date. In addition, longer duration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA shedding in URT has been reported in individuals infected by the B.1.1…
Procedure for the Screening of Eggs and Egg Products to Detect Oxolonic Acid, Ciprofloxacin, Enrofloxacin, and Sarafloxacin Using Micellar Liquid Chr…
2019
A method based on micellar liquid chromatography was developed to determine oxolinic acid, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, and sarafloxacin in eggs and egg products. The antimicrobial drugs were obtained in a micellar solution which was directly injected. The analytes were resolved using a C18 column and a mobile phase of 0.05 M sodium dodecyl sulfate—7.5% 1-propanol—0.5% triethylamine, buffered at pH 3 with phosphate salt, running under the isocratic mode. The signal was monitored by fluorescence. Validation was successfully performed according to the EU Commission Decision 2002/657/EC in terms of specificity, calibration range (LOQ to 1 mg/kg), linearity (R2 >
Use of Micellar Liquid Chromatography to Determine Mebendazole in Dairy Products and Breeding Waste from Bovine Animals
2020
Mebendazole is an anthelmintic drug used in cattle production. However, residues may occur in produced food and in excretions, jeopardizing population health. A method based on micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) was developed to determine mebendazole in dairy products (milk, cheese, butter, and curd) and nitrogenous waste (urine and dung) from bovine animals. Sample treatment was expedited to simple dilution or solid-to-liquid extraction, followed by filtration and direct injection of the obtained solution. The analyte was resolved from matrix compounds in less than 8 min, using a C18 column and a mobile phase made up of 0.15 M sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)&ndash

Background Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis is an emerging tick-borne pathogen. It is widely distributed in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Europe, but knowledge of its distribution in Norway, where I. ricinus reaches its northern limit, is limited. In this study we have developed a real time PCR test for Ca. N. mikurensis and used it to invest…

In wine, one method of limiting the addition of sulphites, a harmful and allergenic agent, is bio-protection. This practice consists of the early addition of microorganisms on grape must before fermentation. Non-Saccharomyces yeasts have been proposed as an interesting alternative to sulphite addition. However, scientific data proving the effectiveness of bio-protection remains sparse. This study provides the first analysis of the chemical and microbiological effects of a Metschnikowia pulcherrima strain inoculated at the beginning of the red winemaking process in three wineries as an alternative to sulphiting. Like sulphiting, bio-protection effectively limited the growth of spoilage micro…
Isolation and Characterization of High-Efficiency Rhizobia From Western Kenya Nodulating With Common Bean.
2021
Common bean is one of the primary protein sources in third-world countries. They form nodules with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, which have to be adapted to the local soils. Commercial rhizobial strains such as Rhizobium tropici CIAT899 are often used in agriculture. However, this strain failed to significantly increase the common bean yield in many places, including Kenya, due to the local soils’ low pH. We isolated two indigenous rhizobial strains from the nodules of common bean from two fields in Western Kenya that have never been exposed to commercial inocula. We then determined their ability to fix nitrogen in common beans, solubilize phosphorus, and produce indole acetic acid. In greenhou…
Price-Time Priority and Pro Rata Matching in an Order Book Model of Financial Markets
2011
Using our recently introduced order book model of financial markets we analyzed two different matching principles for order allocation — price-time priority and pro rata matching. Price-time priority uses the submission timestamp which prioritizes orders in the book with the same price. The order which was entered earliest at a given price limit gets executed first. Pro rata matching is used for products with low intraday volatility of best bid and best ask price. Pro rata matching ensures constant access for orders of all sizes. We demonstrate how a multiagent-based model of financial market can be used to study microscopic aspects of order books.
Forward Trading and Entry under Incomplete Information
2017
This paper examines the strategic use of forward trading by an incumbent producer who faces potential entry under incomplete information. We show the existence of Bayesian-Nash equilibria in which the incumbent uses forward transactions to deter entry that would have occurred under complete information. Additionally, we find that increasing the frequency of forward trading can raise the volume of pre-entry forward trading and affect the likelihood of entry. Our analysis shows that the incumbent can deter entry with a short position if production cost correlation is low and with a long position if that correlation is high. In the limiting case of continuous trading, these two configurations …
Entry under uncertainty: Limit and most-favored-customer pricing
2015
Abstract In the absence of uncertainty, an incumbent that attempts to prevent entry of rival firms can have no incentive to offer a most-favored-customer (MFC) clause because it could lead to higher post-entry prices. Our analysis suggests that this is not necessarily the case under uncertainty. In the presence of uncertainty, the incumbent can set a limit price that affects the entry decision. Limit pricing involves a pre-entry price different from the static monopoly price, which leads to a signaling cost. We show that part of this cost can be distributed over several periods by means of consumer refunds from the MFC clause. If the discount factor is not very high, the incumbent adopts th…
