A Study of Lipid-Lipid and Lipid-Polypeptide Interactions by High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract Ternary systems containing phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine-gramicidin A or cholesterol-gramicidin A in tetrahydrofuran have been examined by high performance liquid chromatography. Preferential solvation of cholesterol and especially gramicidin A by phosphatidylcholine is observed. These results are interpreted in terms of hydrophobic interactions between membrane components.

Liquid chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectrometric determination of cholesterol in animal greases

Abstract Stearic acid, cholesterol and cholesteryl palmitate have been separated in less than 14 min by liquid chromatography on a column (3.9 mm i.d.×150 mm) of Nova-Pack C 18 (5 μm) using chloroform–acetonitrile (45 : 55) as mobile phase pumped at 0.5 ml min −1 ; Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was employed for both, general detection at 2868 or 2855 cm −1 and selective detection at 3285 cm −1 for stearic acid and 3526 cm −1 for cholesterol. Determination of sialic acid and gangliosides in biological samples and dairy products: A review

Gangliosides are sphingolipids containing one or more moieties of sialic acid in their structure. Both gangliosides and sialic acid are bioactive compounds related to animal physiology. Due to their biological relevance, analytical methods adapted to each type of matrix have been developed over time. The present study reviews the main methods applied to the analysis of sialic acid and gangliosides in biological samples and dairy products.

Volumes and compressibilities of pentanol in aqueous alkyltrimethylammonium bromide solutions at different temperatures

Speed of sound and density properties of ternary water-tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide-pentanol system at 15, 25 and 35°C and of water-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide-pentanol system at 25, 35 and 45°C were measured at fixed alcohol concentration as a function of surfactant concentration. The apparent molar volumes Vϕ,R and isentropic compressibilities Kϕ,RS of pentanol in micellar solutions as a function of the surfactant concentration show irregular behavior which depends on the alkyl chain length of the surfactant and tends to disappear with increasing temperature. Moisture transfers inside food products could be controlled or limited by the use of edible films. These are usually based on hydrophobic substances such as lipids to improve barrier efficiency. Water permeability of films is affected by many factors, depending on both the nature of barrier components, the film structure (homogeneous, emulsion, multilayer, etc.), crystal type, shape, size and distribution of lipids, and thermodynamics such as temperature, vapor pressure, or the physical state of water in contact to the films. Influence of the food matrix structure on the retention of aroma compounds.

The retention of the aroma compounds in a multicomponent medium like the food matrix is influenced by their affinity with the protein when lipid is present at a low level (0.5%). The effect of the structure of the media is also studied by using two media with the same composition; one was emusified, and the other was not. Among the studied aroma compounds, 2-nonanone and isoamyl acetate present opposite behaviors: the volatility of isoamyl acetate is not affected by the change of the medium structure whereas that of 2-nonanone increases. Inducing mixing of water-in water BSA/dextran emulsion by a strong polyelectrolyte

Abstract We examine whether a small amount of strong polyelectrolyte (dextran sulfate sodium salt/DSS/) can induce mixing in water-in-water bovine serum albumin/dextran (BSA/DEX) emulsion and how intermacromolecular interactions affect its the rheological properties. Addition of DSS to water-in-water emulsion at pH 5.4 leads to its mixing at the DSS/BSA weight ratio, ( q ( DSS / BSA ) ) ≥ 0.07 , a noticeable increase in viscosity and storage modulus (G′). Mixing is reversible: increasing the ionic strength leads to phase separation in the water/BSA/DEX/DSS system. Removal of trivalent chromium from tannery waste waters using bone charcoal

International audience; The ability of bone charcoal to remove Cr(III) from aqueous solutions by adsorption has been investigated. The adsorbent used was first characterised and then the adsorption was studied as a function of time and amount of charcoal. Tests were carried out with synthetic solutions whose Cr concentrations (500 mg L-1) were similar to those found in some effluents of Moroccan tannery industries. Cr removal efficiencies higher than 90% were obtained at pH 3.5 using 3 g of bone charcoal and a stirring time of about 30 min. International audience; Background: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disease that leads to severe hypertriglyceridemia often associated with recurrent episodes of pancreatitis. The recognition and correct diagnosis of the disease is challenging due to its rarity, and to the lack of specificity of signs and symptoms. Lipid experts, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, pancreatologists, and general practitioners may encounter patients who potentially have FCS.
