The Catalonian Conflict : an Interpretive Structural Model
2019
The methodology ISM (Interpretive Structural Modeling) is used to study the conflict in Catalonia, listing a list of factors and the influences between them, building from them the Matrix of Influences and the Matrix of Scope, from which they classify the factors into levels and a flow diagram is drawn up, concluding what the possible paths of evolution of said conflict would be
Multi-letter reversible and quantum finite automata
2007
The regular language (a+b)*a (the words in alphabet {a, b} having a as the last letter) is at the moment a classical example of a language not recognizable by a one-way quantum finite automaton (QFA). Up to now, there have been introduced many different models of QFAs, with increasing capabilities, but none of them can cope with this language. We introduce a new, quite simple modification of the QFA model (actually even a deterministic reversible FA model) which is able to recognize this language. We also completely characterise the set of languages recognizable by the new model FAs, by finding a "forbidden construction" whose presence or absence in the minimal deterministic (not necessaril…

Elementary Action Systems
2015
This chapter expounds basic notions. An elementary action system is a triple consisting of the set of states, the transition relation between states, and a family of binary relations defined on the set of states. The elements of this family are called atomic actions. Each pair of states belonging to an atomic action is a possible performance of this action. This purely extensional understanding of atomic actions is close to dynamic logic. Compound actions are defined as sets of finite sequences of atomic actions. Thus compound actions are regarded as languages over the alphabet whose elements are atomic actions. This chapter is concerned with the problem of performability of actions and the…
Symmetries in Spaces, Symmetries in Listening
2018
Based on the importance of the concept of symmetry in French sociological aesthetics circa 1900, this chapter analyzes the convergence of theaters, musical form, and musical understanding. The analysis focuses on architectural shape, audience response, and the musical repertoire in the new theaters built in Barcelona (1847), Paris (1862), and Rome (1880). While these theaters were fashioned after the baroque form of the “teatro all’italiana” that prevailed in Italy, France, and Spain during the late nineteenth century, they provided huge spaces accommodating a socially mixed audience within an architecturally symmetrical form. Music critics often aligned acoustic sound waves with actual vis…
An algebraic multigrid based shifted-Laplacian preconditioner for the Helmholtz equation
2007
A preconditioner defined by an algebraic multigrid cycle for a damped Helmholtz operator is proposed for the Helmholtz equation. This approach is well suited for acoustic scattering problems in complicated computational domains and with varying material properties. The spectral properties of the preconditioned systems and the convergence of the GMRES method are studied with linear, quadratic, and cubic finite element discretizations. Numerical experiments are performed with two-dimensional problems describing acoustic scattering in a cross-section of a car cabin and in a layered medium. Asymptotically the number of iterations grows linearly with respect to the frequency while for lower freq…
A damping preconditioner for time-harmonic wave equations in fluid and elastic material
2009
A physical damping is considered as a preconditioning technique for acoustic and elastic wave scattering. The earlier preconditioners for the Helmholtz equation are generalized for elastic materials and three-dimensional domains. An algebraic multigrid method is used in approximating the inverse of damped operators. Several numerical experiments demonstrate the behavior of the method in complicated two-dimensional and three-dimensional domains. peerReviewed
Epileptic seizures as a manifestation of cow's milk allergy: a studied relationship and description of our pediatric experience
2014
Adverse reactions after ingestion of cow's milk proteins can occur at any age, from birth and even amongst exclusively breast-fed infants, although not all of these are hypersensitivity reactions. The most common presentations related to cow's milk protein allergy are skin reactions, failure to thrive, anaphylaxis as well as gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders. In addition, several cases of cow's milk protein allergy in the literature have documented neurological involvement, manifesting with convulsive seizures in children. This may be due to CNS spread of a peripheral inflammatory response. Furthermore, there is evidence that pro-inflammatory cytokines are responsible for disruptin…

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has surprised the entire population. The world has had to face an unprecedented pandemic. Only, Spanish flu had similar disastrous consequences. As a result, drastic measures (lockdown) have been adopted worldwide. Healthcare service has been overwhelmed by the extraordinary influx of patients, often requiring high intensity of care. Mortality has been associated with severe comorbidities, including chronic diseases. Patients with frailty were, therefore, the victim of the SARS-COV-2 infection. Allergy and asthma are the most prevalent chronic disorders in children and adolescents, so they need careful attention and, if necessary, an adaptation of their regular…
