Aim: Resistive index of ophthalmic artery (RI-OA) is associated with atherosclerotic diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of RI-OA and hypertension-related vascular and kidney damage. Materials and methods: Two-hundred and eighty hypertensive patients underwent evaluation of RI-OA, carotid atherosclerosis and level of 24 h albuminuria. Results: Albuminuria and carotid atherosclerosis were positively associated with RI-OA independently of other cardiovascular risk factors. SUMMARY Strongyloides stercoralis infection is characterized by the production of IgE and eosinophils in peripheral blood. Experimental studies have demonstrated that eosinophils play an important role in protection against Strongyloides stercoralis, but the mechanisms regulating eosinophils are not known. In this study we have focused on analysing the molecules that selectively regulate eosinophil migration, namely eotaxin and interleukin-5 (IL-5), using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in patients with strongyloidiasis. The incidence of perinatal transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) depends on the HBeAg/anti-HBe status of the mother. While children of HBeAg-positive mothers have a 90% probability of acquiring a chronic hepatitis B virus carrier state, babies of anti-HBe-positive mothers are more likely to develop fulminant hepatitis within the first 3 to 4 months of life.
