Out-of-plane behaviour of unreinforced masonry infill walls: Review of the experimental studies and analysis of the influencing parameters
2021
Abstract Over the last 50 years, research has mainly focused on characterizing the In-Plane behaviour of unreinforced masonry infill walls. Recently, the focus of research has been addressed to understanding Out-of-Plane behaviour, also from the experimental point of view. However, in the experimental campaigns, there is high variability in the geometrical and mechanical properties of URM infill walls and also in the application of Out-of-Plane loads. Therefore, it is important to outline and critically evaluate the major findings obtained by experimental studies and identify research gaps to better understand the differences and the affinity of apparently equivalent tests. In this paper, t…

Load Monitoring Practice in Elite Women Association Football
2021
The description of current load monitoring practices may serve to highlight developmental needs for both the training ground, academia and related industries. While previous studies described these practices in elite men's football, no study has provided an overview of load monitoring practices in elite women's football. Given the clear organizational differences (i.e., professionalization and infrastructure) between men's and women's clubs, making inferences based on men's data is not appropriate. Therefore, this study aims to provide a first overview of the current load monitoring practices in elite women's football. Twenty-two elite European women's football clubs participated in a close…
Turning a new “page”: ways to decrease the number of pages after hours without compromising patient care
2020
Pages to house staff after hours, especially overnight, lead to interrupted sleep and fatigue the next day. Although some pages are urgent, others may not need an immediate response. In this study we aimed to identify unwarranted pages and to establish ways to reduce them.Over 2 months, all pages to the Department of Pediatric Urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, during call hours were documented, including the assessment of the responding physicians of their medical necessity. After analyzing the reasons for inappropriate pages, we took several steps to try to reduce them without impairing patient care. One year later, pages were tracked again to evaluate the effic…
Stochastic ship roll motion via path integral method
2010
ABSTRACTThe response of ship roll oscillation under random ice impulsive loads modeled by Poisson arrival process is very important in studying the safety of ships navigation in cold regions. Under both external and parametric random excitations the evolution of the probability density function of roll motion is evaluated using the path integral (PI) approach. The PI method relies on the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, which governs the response transition probability density functions at two close intervals of time. Once the response probability density function at an early close time is specified, its value at later close time can be evaluated. The PI method is first demonstrated via simple …
Hypothetical molecular mechanisms by which local iron overload facilitates the development of venous leg ulcers and multiple sclerosis lesions.
2008
Summary This paper presents a hypothetical model of role for iron in the development of venous leg ulcers and multiple sclerosis. Elevated concentrations of iron were found in the skin affected by venous hypertension and also in the areas of brain with multiple sclerosis lesions. Individuals with hemochromatosis gene (HFE) mutations: C282Y and H63D, which result in a less efficient transport of iron by macrophages, are characterized by an increased risk for venous leg ulcer and multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a T cell-mediated disease, and T cells probably participate in the development of venous ulcers. This deleterious role of ferric ions could be related to the regulation of T …
The EBV-DNA Can be Used as a Diagnostic and Follow-up Parameter of the Rhinopharyngeal Tumors in the Non-Endemic Population of the Western Sicily
2018
To evaluate whether EBV-DNA can be used as a diagnostic and follow-up parameter for nasopharyngeal tumors in a non-endemic population. The study was carried out in a university hospital. A retrospective study was conducted on 40 paraffin samples of histological preparations. EB-DNA was detected by real-time PCR technique. A prospective study was also conducted on a group of 30 patients who underwent nasopharyngeal biopsy for suspected nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by comparing EBV-DNA concentrations between the histological specimen and the serum. Quantification of genomic copies of EBV-DNA in serum and detection of anti-EBV antibodies was performed. In both groups the presence of high vir…
Residential greenness-related DNA methylation changes
2021
Abstract Background Residential greenness has been associated with health benefits, but its biological mechanism is largely unknown. Investigation of greenness-related DNA methylation profiles can contribute to mechanistic understanding of the health benefits of residential greenness. Objective To identify DNA methylation profiles associated with greenness in the immediate surroundings of the residence. Methods We analyzed genome-wide DNA methylation in 1938 blood samples (982 participants) from the Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung and Heart Diseases in Adults (SAPALDIA). We estimated residential greenness based on normalized difference vegetation index at 30 × 30 m cell (green3…
Modeling of Offshore Crane and Marine Craft in Wave Motion
2020
Safe handling of heavy payloads in an offshore environment requires careful planning and depends on the interaction between a crane and a vessel. This paper investigates the coupled dynamics between a multipurpose crane with payload, and an offshore carrying vessel. A classical multi-body model is derived using holonomic constraints and Newton-Euler kinetics. The resulting index-3 system of differential-algebraic equation (DAE) is transformed into an index-1 system and solved using commonly used numerical ode solvers. Numerical simulations are carried out to show that the proposed models behave in a physically realistic manner. © 2020 IEEE. Personal use of this material is permitted. Permis…
Mass Estimation of Self-Contained Linear Electro-Hydraulic Actuators and Evaluation of the Influence on Payload Capacity of a Knuckle Boom Crane
2019
Abstract Self-contained linear hydraulic drives are characterized by having integrated the hydraulic power unit e.g. electrical prime mover, hydraulic pumps etc. and the hydraulic cylinder in a single compact unit. Compared to the hydraulic cylinder itself, the mass of the self-contained linear actuator is significantly larger. For some applications, e.g. crane manipulators the additional mass of the actuators compared to conventional valve-controlled hydraulics, may reduce the payload capacity, which is a central performance parameter. As a case study, a medium sized two link knuckle boom crane is modelled and by assuming the force capability of the hydraulic cylinders to be the limiting f…
