Connective tissue diseases, like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), are associated with early and accelerated atherosclerosis. Recently, the concept of “early vascular aging” (EVA) has been more widely accepted. Aortic stiffness is one of the important markers of EVA. Delayed filling of retinal and ciliary circulation after central retinal artery occlusion

The filling times of the retinal and choroidal circulation were evaluated in 17 patients with central retinal artery occlusion by means of fluorescein angiography. A correlation between the filling times of the two circulations was found. However, two filling patterns were seen: first, both fillings delayed; second, both fillings normal. It is probable that in the former case an obstructive disease of the carotid arteries exists, while in the latter case an important pathology of the carotid arteries is lacking, favouring a rapid restoration of the retinal circulation. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the results of the Doppler velocimetry of the carotid arteries.

Rhesus factor polymorphism has been an evolutionary enigma since its discovery in 1939. Carriers of the rarer allele should be eliminated by selection against Rhesus positive children born to Rhesus negative mothers. Here I used an ecologic regression study to test the hypothesis that Rhesus factor polymorphism is stabilized by heterozygote advantage. Abstract This study addresses experimentally the heat transfer, the temperature azimuthal non-uniformity and the onset of oscillations in a low temperature physical model of a medium-sized Czochralski crystal growth process with a strong horizontal magnetic field (HMF). It is observed that under certain conditions the integral heat flux may decrease with increasing magnetic field strength at the same time as the flow velocity increases. Three channel photoplethysmography (PPG) signal pulse wave studies of the leg’s conduit arteries during rest conditions were performed. The obtained data of each channel showed similar values, proving arterial PPG as a reliable and repeatable method to assess arterial waveform parameters. A validation experiment was carried out by acquiring signals from three identical IR PPG sensors, which were placed on different sites over the leg’s conduit arteries during rest conditions. Eine Serie von 11 Polyvinylacetaten wurde unter konstanten Reaktionsbedingungen bis zu verschiedenen Umsatzen polymerisiert. An diesen Praparaten wurden osmotische Messungen und Streulichtmessungen durchgefuhrt. Die Messungen liefern das Zahlen- und das Gewichtsmittel der Polymeren. Aus der Anderung der Mittelwerte mit steigendem Umsatz werden die Ubertragungskonstante Cp zum Polymeren und die Wachstumskonstante kN der endstandigen Doppelbindung berechnet. Genome-wide association analysis in primary sclerosing cholangitis identifies two non-HLA susceptibility loci

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic bile duct disease affecting 2.4-7.5% of individuals with inflammatory bowel disease. We performed a genome-wide association analysis of 2,466,182 SNPs in 715 individuals with PSC and 2,962 controls, followed by replication in 1,025 PSC cases and 2,174 controls. We detected non-HLA associations at rs3197999 in MST1 and rs6720394 near BCL2L11 (combined P = 1.1 x 10(-16) and P = 4.1 x 10(-8), respectively).

Abstract Particle image velocimetry techniques coupled with advanced image processing tools are receiving an increasing interest for measuring flow quantities and local bubble-size distributions in gas–liquid mechanically agitated vessels. When trying to analyze image information the problem arises that bubble sizes are generally underestimated, due to the fact that the laser sheet used for lighting the system randomly cuts bubbles over non-diametrical planes, leading to an apparent bubble size distribution even in the ideal case of single sized bubbles.
