Role of excitons in double Raman resonances in GaAs quantum wells

Raman scattering by longitudinal-optical phonons has been measured in GaAs-AlAs multiple quantum wells at high magnetic fields. Doubly resonant scattering processes are observed at photon energies corresponding to magneto-excitons with different principal quantum numbers for the incoming and outgoing channels. The existence of these initially forbidden scattering processes, their resonance energies, and their relative intensities are correctly reproduced by our theoretical description. Soft X-Ray Irradiation of Methanol Ice: Implication for H2CO Formation in Interstellar Regions

We performed 0.3 keV soft X-ray irradiation of a methanol ice at 8 K under ultra-high vacuum conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that soft X-rays are used to study photolysis of ice analogs. Despite the low irradiation dose of 10{sup -6} photons molecule{sup -1}, the formation of formaldehyde has been observed. The results of our experiments suggest that X-rays may be a promising candidate to the formation of complex molecules in regions where UV radiation is severely inhibited.

Target thickness dependence of the Be(p,xn) neutron energy spectrum

We report on the current status of the analysis of an experiment performed at The Svedberg Laboratory, with the aim of investigating the produced neutron field by Be(p,xn) converters of three different thicknesses with a 30 MeV proton beam. The neutron energy spectra were measured with the Time of Flight technique using a BC-501 liquid scintillator with good n-γ Pulse Shape Discrimination properties, while the detected events were recorded simultaneously by two Data AcQuisition systems. An investigation of environmental temperature effects on energy exchange by thermal radiation

The radiative heating or cooling of a body placed in an environment, whose temperature is considered constant is described by Stefan's law. In this paper, an analysis is made of how a time-dependent environmental temperature influences the heating/cooling process. We compare experimental results for a resistor first heated by the Joule effect inside a glass vacuum tube and then cooled under two different conditions: in a bath at a constant temperature and in air. We also discuss a model that describes how the time-dependent tube temperature influences the radiative resistor cooling by identifying the properties of the environment that make the resistor cooling rate linear.

A laboratory experiment on inferring Poiseuille's law for undergraduate students

In this paper a laboratory experiment is proposed to infer Poiseuille's law. A simple set-up based on two flasks joined by a detachable tube allows one to measure using tubes of different radii and different lengths. One of the flasks is connected to a vacuum pump to control the pressure differential between the tube extremes. The influence on the flow of different radii, lengths, pressures and viscosities can be studied in a didactic way by measuring the flow rate for each of these variables. A pedagogical approach to the Boltzmann factor through experiments and simulations

The Boltzmann factor is the basis of a huge amount of thermodynamic and statistical physics, both classical and quantum. It governs the behaviour of all systems in nature that are exchanging energy with their environment. To understand why the expression has this specific form involves a deep mathematical analysis, whose flow of logic is hard to see and is not at the level of high school or college students' preparation. We here present some experiments and simulations aimed at directly deriving its mathematical expression and illustrating the fundamental concepts on which it is grounded. Two experiments to approach the Boltzmann factor: chemical reaction and viscous flow

In this paper we discuss a pedagogical approach aimed at pointing out the role played by the Boltzmann factor in describing phenomena usually perceived as regulated by different mechanisms of functioning. Experimental results regarding some aspects of a chemical reaction and of the viscous flow of some liquids are analysed and described in terms of macroscopic variables whose temperature dependence is proportional to the Boltzmann factor. A description of a workshop implementing the approach in the framework of an undergraduate course for engineering education and some preliminary results about its pedagogical relevance are then reported.

Dynamic measurement of the elastic constant of an helicoidal spring by a smartphone

Abstract We describe an educational activity that can be done by using smartphones to collect data in physics experiments aimed to measure the oscillating period of a spring-mass system and the elastic constant of the helicoidal spring by the dynamic method. Results for the oscillating period and for the elastic constant of the spring agree very well with measurements obtained by different methods. We also discuss the error analysis that can be done in an introductory physics laboratory at undergraduate level.

Nuclear Energy Density Optimization: UNEDF2

The parameters of the UNEDF2 nuclear energy density functional (EDF) model were obtained in an optimization to experimental data consisting of nuclear binding energies, proton radii, odd-even mass staggering data, fission-isomer excitation energies, and single particle energies. In addition to parameter optimization, sensitivity analysis was done to obtain parameter uncertainties and correlations. The resulting UNEDF2 is an all-around EDF. However, the sensitivity analysis also demonstrated that the limits of current Skyrme-like EDFs have been reached and that novel approaches are called for.

Rotational spectra of CF+and13CF+: accurate rest frequencies and spectroscopic parameters

The astrophysical relevance of the fluoromethylidynium ion and its importance for the interstellar chemistry of fluorine motivated the present laboratory spectroscopic investigation of both 12 CF + and the corresponding 13 C-containing isotopologue, 13 CF + . Aims. This investigation has been carried out to provide accurate rest frequencies for future (radioastronomical) observations, to improve the accuracy of the values for the spectroscopic parameters available in the literature for CF + , and to provide them for the first time for 13 CF + .
